2008 Coaching Changes/Speculation Thread

Self will stay as Kansas coach

Bill Self is staying in Lawrence.

The Kansas head coach said he will sign an extension that will keep him with the Jayhawks, ending speculation that he would leave for Oklahoma State.

"I'm staying," Self told FOXSports.com. "I visited with Oklahoma State's Mike Holder last night. We had a great visit and I was very impressed with their presentation.
"But I can't be two places at once and this is where I want to be. As excited as I am about the past, I'm just as excited about the future."
An official announcement is expected at a news conference at 4:30 p.m. CT. Self wouldn't comment on the length and terms of the deal. "Preliminary talks have taken place and it's going to be worked out," he said.

what's y'all opinion on this guy?
I don't follow baketball very much anymore, but from what I'm reading, he seems like a fairly solid hire.
I'd recommend you download today's "Rivals Radio" podcast and listen to host Bill King's comments on him. The idea is that Trent has a solid basketball mind but is not much of a salesman for the program. Concern being, how to generate interest level in the fan base, which is currently lower than whale leavings.

Sources: Providence interviews Drake's Davis for head gig

Providence spent Monday interviewing Drake's Keno Davis in an attempt to fill its men's basketball coaching position that has been open since the school fired Tim Welsh on March 15.

Sources have told CBSSports.com that Davis is now the primary candidate, and KCCI Sports in Iowa reported late Monday that Davis' interview at Providence was the reason he missed Monday's ceremony at the Iowa Statehouse that was designed to honor his Missouri Valley Conference championship team.

Davis is in play at Providence because George Mason's Jim Larranaga and UMass' Travis Ford have already turned down the job, and though a move to the Big East doesn't make sense on the surface it's worth noting that Davis was partially raised in Boston and is thus familiar with that part of the country.

Davis was CBSSports.com's National Coach of the Year this season.

He led Drake to its first NCAA tournament since 1971.

Ford to get $9 million in seven-year deal with Oklahoma State

LANGSTON, Okla. -- New Oklahoma State basketball coach Travis Ford will make about $9 million over seven years under a deal revealed Friday at a regents meeting.

The contract calls for Ford to make $1.3 million per year.

He replaces Sean Sutton, who resigned April 1 under pressure.

Sutton's original buyout package called for him to make $2.7 million over 10 years, but tax considerations have led officials to restructure the deal to give him $2.2 million, with him to receive full payment by the end of this year.

Ford, who took Massachusetts to the NIT the last two seasons, was introduced as Oklahoma State's new coach Thursday.

FOX Sports on MSN - COLLEGE BASKETBALL - Sources: Drake finds replacement for Davis

Drake has hired Arizona State assistant Mark Phelps to replace Keno Davis.

According to sources close to the situation, a news conference is expected on Monday.

Phelps has spent the last two seasons at Arizona State after following head coach Herb Sendek from N.C. State, where he spent 10 years as an assistant.
Drake athletic director Sandy Hatfield Clubb previously worked at Arizona State.
Phelps takes over a Drake team that was expected to finish towards the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference a year ago, but wound up winning 28 games and earning an NCAA tournament berth ? its first since 1971. Davis left for Providence last week after earning several Coach of the Year honors.
