2008 Coaching Changes/Speculation Thread

DaytonBuck

I've always liked them
Mark Montgomery to Cal would be a great move for them. He did a nice job at Stanford with the stringent academic requirements there.

Chick Ludwig of the Dayton Daily News reported on his blog that Brian Gregory is going to Marquette. Not sure if buy that one.

Bobby Knight is rumored to be in the running for the Western Kentucky job.

The Knight to Western Kentucky has been refuted by the people at Western FWIW

I can't see Montgomery getting back into coaching. Why would he have left the Stanford position if he still enjoyed it. I don't know maybe that burnout has worn off.

Grigory to Marquette was mentioned during the game last night on ESPN.

He coached the Warriors in the NBA after leaving Stanford

Tom Crean would have to pay Indiana $3M for early opt out of 8-year deal - NCAA Basketball - Yahoo! Sports

Tom Crean would have to pay Indiana $3M for early opt out of 8-year deal

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)?Indiana is serious about keeping new basketball coach Tom Crean.

Under a preliminary deal between Crean and the university, Crean would owe $3 million if he resigns in the first three years of an eight-year contract. The amount lowers to $2 million in years four and five. It would be $1 million the last three years of the deal.

The contract is worth more than $18 million.

Indiana agreed to pay $650,000 to help buy out Crean?s contract at Marquette, where he was signed through 2017.

The Indiana deal calls for Crean to receive an annual base salary of $600,000 and more than $1 million a year for promotional appearances and other off-court work.

A final contract is expected to be signed by May 15.

I don't buy the Greggory to Marquette stuff. If there was any credence to that story it would probably have been in the actual paper and not the blog of the Bengals beatwriter who has shown bias against UD all season. I'm pretty sure blog entries don't have to hold up to the same standard as an actual news story.

A. Gregory hasn't done much at UD except for two above average recruiting classes (Chris Wright this year, Paul Williams/Josh Benson next year).

B. Gregory already turned down the Depaul job which is in his hometown. Marquette is probably a small step up from Depaul but the hometown thing kinda offsets that.

More money and the Big East might tempt Gregory. I haven't heard any other names mentioned for that job. Maybe there is a ND assistant who might be a viable candidate.

Maybe big Rick will go back to Marquette since he was an assistant under Maguire way back when.

Ex-Stanford coach Montgomery crosses Bay to take over at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Mike Montgomery knows his surprising move across San Francisco Bay won't sit well with certain fans of both Stanford and California. He's now a traitor to some Cardinal supporters, and he's still a carpetbagging enemy to other Golden Bears.

But Cal's new basketball coach thinks a few victories should resolve even the oldest grudges in Berkeley, where he's in charge of raising the Bears to the same heights he reached at Stanford.

Wearing a blue shirt and gold tie Saturday after 18 years in Cardinal red, the veteran coach agreed to a six-year contract at Cal nearly four years after he left Stanford for a dismal stint with the Golden State Warriors. Montgomery won 393 games and four Pac-10 titles at Stanford, and he sees no reason the Cardinal's archrivals can't enjoy the same success.

ESPN is saying that Ben Braun (formerly at Cal) will be going to Rice.

And that Okie State will offer Bill Self a $6 million sigining bonus. I'm sure he wants to hear that question before the game today.

I heard between half times of one of the games that there was some talk about Okie State making an offer to Tubby. He did coach at Tulsa.

Reports: Johnson reaches verbal agreement to coach LSU

Trent Johnson is leaving Stanford after four seasons to become the new coach at LSU, according to reports in the Louisiana media and online.

Johnson, who led Stanford to three NCAA tournaments and a trip to this year's Sweet 16, has reached a verbal agreement with the Tigers. Former coach John Brady was fired during the 2007-08 season.

An announcement has not been scheduled, although several people at LSU familiar with the selection process said a formal announcement was expected by Thursday. LSU recently hired Joe Alleva to replace Skip Bertman as athletic director. Alleva was Duke's AD since 1998.
