2008 Big Ten Football discussion

I agree, although, seeing as it's in AA this year, the marmots might pull a W out of their asses. Over the next few years, I do see D'antonio turning the tide in the series. I guess UM will have to start searching for another "true rival" again.
Sorry. Much like all the Barwis/RR hype is only fun and games until proven on the field, Dantonio has to prove it too. And the difference between RR/Barwis and Dantonio is Dantonio has already failed once.

Little Brother is going to stay Little Brother until he proves otherwise, and Dantonio has about 40 years of Sparty-being-Sparty to undo.

You don't have John L. Smith to slap around anymore.
JLS was good enough at it himself.....we didn't even have to

LOL @ the message that they showed across the bottom of the screen during Tressel's interview on College Football Live.

Some dude from MINNESOTA of all places called Ohio State an embarrassment to the Big Ten. Really? Minnesota?

Lest his name be lost to history, it was "Mike from St. Cloud, Minnesota".

He has a point. When Ohio State lost to LSU, every college football fan was watching. When Minnehaha lost to NDSU, even he wasn't watching.

The only thing worse than losing to a I-AA team is losing to a I-AA team and nobody is surprised.

Even worse, NDSU had only moved up to 1AA from DII 3 years before.

Minnesota trash talk, that reminds me of Illinois Nazi's. I hate Illinois Nazi's. :shake:

Embarrassing losses last year led to league becoming a punch line

CHICAGO ? The Big Ten Conference found itself a running joke last football season.

It started with Michigan losing to Appalachian State in the biggest upset in college history. The bashing didn't end until decisive losses by Ohio State in the BCS national championship game and Illinois in the Rose Bowl.

"Michigan lost to Appalachian State,'' said ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. "That became a punch line. Michigan looked like they had ankle weights against Oregon. That became a punch line. The others . . . Iowa lost to Western Michigan, Wisconsin losing to Citadel at halftime. Anything that could go wrong went wrong."

The Big Ten's image is falling faster than the dollar. Nevertheless, Ohio State is the Big Ten's preseason favorite and mentioned by some national analysts as a strong contender for a third straight appearance in the BCS title game. After losing the last two BCS title games by a total of 41 points, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel understood the root of the bashing but didn't necessarily agree.

Michigan State quarterback Brian Hoyer

CHICAGO -- July is the kindest month for football coaches. All is well with their world. Their seniors are mature leaders. Their freshmen will give the jolt of talent they need.
Nobody's injured and the season is full of possibility.
Such was the message conveyed by Big Ten coaches last week at the conference meetings.
Even the Minnesotas of the world are pumped, though given coach Tim Brewster's over-the-top personality, perhaps that should be discounted.

Spread offenses taking over Big Ten

By Marc Morehouse

Bret Bielema Wisconsin coach

The Iowa Hawkeyes' offense has become the quaint cottage in a Big Ten neighborhood full of futuristic homes of tomorrow.

It's not even a debate, the "spread" offense vs. "traditional."

The spread was a major topic among the conference's coaches and media during the Big Ten meetings in Chicago. When eight of your conference's 11 teams employ the spread in some way, shape or form, it's a legitimate topic.

Penn State will likely move to the spread ranks this season with quarterback Daryll Clark and his fleet feet taking over the Nittany Lions' offense. Michigan Coach Rich Rodriguez has unpacked his version of the spread, which made West Virginia a national title contender. Ohio State also will likely bring out some form of the spread for touted freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

Those three join Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota and Northwestern.

"There's so much flexibility in the system," Northwestern Coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "If you have a solid quarterback who will make good decisions, can run a little bit, has the ability to throw the quick game, it opens up your ability to do a lot of different concepts offensively."

With so many teams using the spread, the "traditionals" have become oddities, of sorts. Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz explained his reasons.

Suspended RB Smith dismissed from Wisconsin football team

MADISON, Wis. -- Lance Smith was dismissed from Wisconsin's football team Monday, a month after he was expelled from a first-offenders program for failing to meet its requirements.

Coach Bret Bielema, who suspended Smith last month, announced the dismissal after the team's first practice of the season.

Smith was placed in the program last October after a judge accepted Smith's guilty pleas to charges of battery and disorderly conduct. The charges stemmed from an altercation between Smith and his girlfriend in July 2007.

Interesting write-up. I kind of like the best and worst case scenario portion. However, a bit of sloopy journalism in the Michigan coaching analysis. Did Moeller start in the 70s? Hmmmm.... maybe I'm getting old...

"Michigan
COACHING: After only having two head coaches in four decades, Lloyd Carr is out and Rich Rodriguez has defected from WVU, which he made into a perennial powerhouse in the Big East and nationally. Rodriguez runs a tight ship and should fit right in at Michigan, updating the offense to the current century. "
