2008 Big Ten Football discussion

i think if pat devlin ends up being the PSU quarterback they'll do some good things on offense this year. it'll be a rough season in happy valley either way, IMO, but i think he gives them their best chance at W's.

I thought he looked pretty solid in their spring game and IIRC, he guided the 2nd team offense against the 1st team defense.

Big Ten predictions (way too early version)

Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

It's July, and a ton could change before the season opens Aug. 30, but I'll roll the dice anyway. Everyone loves predictions, and I give my people what they want. Or what they don't want. (Note: Please address e-mails to Mr. Idiot. Thanks.)

Anyway, here are a few:

Big Ten champion: Ohio State (really going out on a limb here, guys)

Offensive MVP: Beanie Wells, RB, Ohio State

Defensive MVP: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State

Contd....

Is the Big 10 THAT bad?

As you might expect, the Buckeyes dominate the discussion.

Also as expected, D. Dodd is the only one to really take a shot at the Bucks; but even he wasn't as harsh as you might think.

I now have a man crush on Charlie Feldman.

If the SEC is so superior, how did Michigan beat Florida in the Capitol One Bowl last season? Wisconsin in back to back years over Auburn and Arkansas? Penn State over Tennessee all time in bowl match ups? Didn’t Ohio State beat Miami for the National Title not that long ago (I understand that controversial call, but OSU also converted a 4th and 17 to keep the drive alive), and at that time Miami was better than any SEC team. I played in the SEC and believe it is the best conference in the nation, but the hype exceeds the reality in my humble opinion.

:banger:

Ted Greenstein ain't too bad either...

I'd actually love to see Ohio State-Georgia for the national title. The disparity at the top of the leagues is not as great as the chicken-fried-steak crowd thinks it is.

:slappy:

Dodd is a boob.

The Big Ten is definitely in a down period. Tom Lemming was right when he touched off a firestorm with that quote in the Chicago Sun-Times. Recruiting is definitely sliding. Pesky programs like Purdue, Michigan State and Iowa have fallen off. Michigan certainly isn't going to be a factor this season. Rich Rod is going to get it going but it's a square-peg, round-hole thing in 2008.

You know you're on soft ground when Lemming is your backup.

Purdue & Iowa may be down...so what? Indiana & Illinois are up and at worst Sparty will just be Sparty.

Right or wrong , I think the sparties will beat scum this year.

I agree, although, seeing as it's in AA this year, the marmots might pull a W out of their asses. Over the next few years, I do see D'antonio turning the tide in the series. I guess UM will have to start searching for another "true rival" again.

But I like boobs.

14 -22 in bowl games and in only two of those games (OSU - UF and OSU - Miami) was there anything like parity or an advantage to the Big 10 team in terms of venue... OSU v. Miami in 2003. In most instances it was an underranked Big 10 team stepping up to play a higher ranked team in a home, or near home, setting. That would seem to me to be better than the Vegas odds would have predicted.
