COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State women's cross country team opened the 2008 season with a fifth-place finish at Purdue's Great American Legends 5K race Friday in West Lafayette, Ind. Other schools competing in the event were Ball State, Butler, Central Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Northwestern, Purdue and Taylor.

Leading Ohio State was sophomore Ellen Birmingham who placed ninth in a time of 19:19. Sarah Klinvex and Sarah Lowe rounded out the Top 30 for the Buckeyes with 26th and 28th-place finishes, respectively.

And even though it may not be the results assistant coach Chris Neal had hoped for, he is optimistic about the future of the program.

Foster finishes seventh among Division-I runners; check back Saturday morning for photos from Friday's meet

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Ohio State women's cross country team continues to improve week after week under head coach Karen Dennis and new distance coach Chris Neal as the Buckeyes turned in several strong finishes Friday on a hilly, 5K course at the All-Ohio Cross Country Championships in Delaware, Ohio.

Ohio State finished seventh overall as a team among Division-I schools, but Neal, Dennis and the Buckeyes got what they wanted out of the race: marked improvement.

"The team finally had some of the breakthroughs they were looking for," Neal said after the race. "Sarah Foster and Emily Thompson ran well together in the front pack. We still need to clean up our fifth runner and hopefully that will happen at Pre-Nationals in a week."

Ohio State Individual Results:

7 Sarah Foster (18:36.0)
10 Emily Thompson (18:44.7)
33 Ellen Birmingham (19:36.6)
37 Sarah Lowe (19:40.2)
50 Brittany Wise (20:06.8)
53 Jordan Jennewine (20:11.5)
63 Sara Klinvex (21:14.8)

There were 45 Ohio colleges represented in the Women's race with 42 of them having 5+ runners for team scoring. I believe the only school not at the meet was Miami University. The All-Ohio meet is scored twice: Once overall regardless of division and once for each division. Most NAIA schools are included in the D-II scoring. If you are semi-interested in distance running and ever get the chance to watch this meet... do it. Ohio is one of the only states to put on a meet of this type where all schools, regardless of division and talent, run in one race. It a pretty cool race to watch.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Although the Buckeyes feature one of the youngest squads in a strong Big Ten conference, they still improved on their performance at the Big Ten Championships from a year ago, placing 10th out of 11 teams.

Ohio State featured two freshmen, four sophomores and one junior Sunday and look poised to climb the Big Ten standings even more next season under the tutelage of new distance coach Chris Neal.

Well, I guess there wasn't any other way but up. Hopefully, they will get better in the next couple years but don't hold your breath.:!
Agreed... they need to lock down the very best talent in the state for that to happen but that will be tough to do with some of the MAC schools in the state having better distance programs. On top of that some of the most of highly talented women's distance runners in Ohio high school have left the state for other programs... Angela Homan 6+ years ago went on to be an All-American at Auburn, Angela Bizaarri is an All-Big10 runner for Illinois, Bridget Franek is an All-Big10 runner for Penn State... I'm sure there are plenty of others I'm missing. Ohio State has never been known for its women's distance running (at least as long as I've been following them).

With that said I applaud the women who are currently on the team. I understand how much time and dedication it takes to train to compete at the collegiate level. Here's to them getting better in the future.

Ohio State awaits announcement of possible at-large bid to NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio
- In what could have been their final meet of the 2008 season, Ohio State put together a solid 6K race to end up 13th out of 34 teams at the Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Buckeyes bounced back from there 10th-place finish out of 11 total teams at the Big Ten Championships and have left themselves with a chance to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. They will find out if they qualified or not either Sunday or Monday.

The Buckeyes strong showing at the regional meet was due in part to the performance of Sarah Foster, who finished 28th in 22:01. Foste leaves herself with an outside shot at qualifying for the national meet as well.
