Buckeyes eager to prove their mettle
Monday, February 12, 2007
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

NORTH CANTON Fans snaked around the Knights of Columbus building in North Canton for more than autographs. Yes, they each ponied up $45 each to get autographs of Ohio State football players.
They also got to meet the faces of the 2007 Buckeyes about a month after Ohio State's season ended with a lopsided loss to Florida in the national championship game. The James Cancer Hospital in Columbus was the beneficiary of the charitable event.
For linebacker James Laurinaitis, wide receivers Brian Hartline and Brian Robiskie, offensive lineman Kirk Barton and defensive back Malcolm Jenkins, it was a chance to let their fans know Ohio State is hungry to wipe the taste of defeat out of its mouth.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what "magic" Butch Reynolds has done on this team, now that he has been there a full year. Or close to a full year.
Particularly on offense. Where we lost so much speed.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The standing order in the Ohio State receivers? ready room these days is all hands on deck. The two leading pass catchers from last season, Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez, abandoned ship a year early in favor of the NFL. They?re expected in Indianapolis this week to take part in some of the activities associated with the league?s scouting combine.

We do have Robo and Hartline returning so these two need to become the receiving stars this year, and our leaders in the receiving corps. After that we have a lot of highly touted youngsters coming up. Of that group Small, Dukes, Sanzenbacher,Washington and maybe even Saine. Someone will have to show us they are ready to play now.
Speaking in terms of speed and route running can we replace what has gone?
IMO we will not have the talents of Ted and Gonzo right away. Small may be our speed and Robo our route runner. Hartline appears to do fairly well on routes.
I'm sure they will all improve under the guidance of the coaches and that we will have another great year.

You had better be there then! Be there or be in trouble! I'm ready for warmer weather too.
I remember 2 years ago we sat in the Buckeye Hall Of Fame Cafe due to rain & snow. There was no way I was going to sit in that for a spring game. I had just gotten over being sick for 3 weeks.
Last year & in 2004 I got sunburn.
I will be in Columbus the week after as well for a greyhound reunion on the 28th.
I wanted to go the the Equine Affaire at the Ohio State Fairgrounds but it is the week before the game on the 12 & 13th I might as well stay there. I think I can skip that one!
Three weeks in a row would be a stretch 2 weeks are plenty.
I like Corona! You good with that?

Has anyone ever attended this event? If so, how is it?

I did just last year. It was a very nice event imo. It was good insight into what Assistant / position coaches were looking at coming into the season. Several (upcoming) Senior players were interviewed from both sides of the ball (i think a little more than a dozen or so attended). The food was very good. And the auction was very cool. You get a t-shirt, BSB & program for the event. And some of the players from our last Rose Bowl Team ('97?) were there...Vrabel, Michael Wiley, Coach Cooper, etc. I'm going back this year, definitely. It was a lot of fun.

I like that we're going to have a new QB with a new receiving corps. It'll probably be pretty rough in the beginning of the season -- but it should set us up great for 2008. I feel good with the talent at both positions too -- we've already got 2 solid WRs and I think next year Small will step up and be a great vertical threat.

Three players to battle for Buckeyes' QB job

Tressel doesn't indicate if any candidate stands out

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

CANTON - Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel is bracing himself for the question that will come up every day until the Sept. 1 season opener.
He already seems to be agonizing about the time he might need to answer, ``Who's the quarterback?''
With Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith taking his 25-3 record as a starter to the NFL, the Buckeyes will let three candidates battle in spring ball and fall camp before OSU hits the field against Youngstown State.

What do you think about when you're in Hawaii, it's raining, and the Bucks have just polished off Michigan in basketball? Why, spring football, of course. Interested in hearing about what position battles intrigue you the most, as we head into the spring. Obviously, QB will be the most watched, but there are many others as well:

1.) The QB battle will begin.
2.) I still think it will be interesting to see who emerges at LB. Laurinaitis is a given, but how about the competition between Freeman, Homan, Terry, Grant, and Gibson? Spitler might have something to say, as well.
3.) Who takes over for Datish? The center usually makes many of the line calls. Shotgun snaps are critical (I won't go there), and there has to be a cohesiveness along the OL.
4.) Many will be called, who will be chosen at the interior DL spots? The emergence of Worthington could be a huge factor.
5.) A lot of young talent is waiting for an opportunity in the secondary. There should be a war for the safety spots, and the second corner spot still needs to be filled.
