2007 tOSU Football Season Discussion (merged)

Grading the Buckeyes
Jim Naveau | [email protected]
- 10.12.2007

COLUMBUS ? It?s early in the academic year at Ohio State, but with six football games already in the record books, it?s time for mid-term grades for the Buckeyes football team.
A look at the grades OSU?s offensive and defensive units have earned so far:
Quarterback
Todd Boeckman waited 4 ? years to get the chance to start and was in control when he finally got the chance to take over. The junior from St. Henry has completed 64 percent of his passes and thrown for 14 touchdowns.
Boeckman?s six interceptions are a few more than OSU followers have grown used to with Troy Smith. But other than that and a couple of underthrown deep balls early in the season, Boeckman has done everything that could be expected.

Ohio State, ranked No. 3, has legitimate shot to reach national title game

Saturday, October 13, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- Halfway through the season, Ohio State receiver Brian Hartline sees the light - and it's coming from Bourbon Street.
New Orleans will host the Bowl Championship Series national title game Jan. 7.
"The light's twinkling down there, but we've got a lot of football to play," Hartline said. "Halfway through, we're feeling pretty good right now, but as soon as we start feeling too good, bad things happen."
It's no surprise then that, according to OSU left guard Steve Rehring, the Buckeyes coaches this week reminded the team how the second-half schedule toughens up: OSU's first six opponents are currently 18-17, their last six 25-11.
But ESPN analyst Lee Corso spoke for a lot of college football fans when he said, "No question in my mind, Ohio State reminds me of the 2002 Ohio State team that won it all."

Five more wins and it's 'Hello, Big Easy' for Buckeyes

By Brian Kollars
Staff Writer

This is pretty simple. If top-ranked Ohio State wins its last five games, the Buckeyes will get a chance to redeem themselves in the BCS championship game in New Orleans.
What lies ahead for Jim Tressel's 7-0 team:

Deserted dreams give Buckeyes hope for this year
Jason Lloyd, Morning Journal Writer
10/16/2007

FOR the third time in four weeks, there is a new No. 1. Now it's Ohio State's task to unplug the carousel.

Every week, fans across the country believe this is the week college football will settle into a pattern of normalcy. Then Stanford beats USC. Then Kentucky beats LSU and Oregon State beats Cal.

And the Buckeyes, simply by being The Beaver and doing everything right, have ascended to the top of the world.

Now what are the odds they stay there?

Ohio State football
Rougher road lies ahead
Buckeyes' schedule from here on out fraught with peril

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

If top-ranked Ohio State's season can be considered a journey, then the Buckeyes are leaving the foothills and heading into the mountains. If your preferred analogy is a sandwich, "we're headed into the meat of our schedule," defensive end Vernon Gholston said.

Washington making strides for Bucks
By JON SPENCER
For The Advocate

COLUMBUS -- Lock-down cornerback Malcolm Jenkins does more for Ohio State than just keep opposing quarterbacks on their toes. He also keeps his secondary mates alert as well. "With Malcolm doing the things he's done, it's a challenge to me, knowing people are going to attack my side of the field," said sophomore Donald Washington, the other starting corner on the nation's No. 1-ranked team and scoring defense. "I'm just trying to do my one-eleventh of the defense."

Scout.com: Cavalcade of Whimsy - Predicting the BCS

There?s no need to watch college football until January. Now that the initial BCS rankings are out, I?m going to clue you in on what?s going to happen in the BCS race. The ten teams in the big money matchups will be ?

1. Ohio State ? BCS Championship
You?re not happy about it, and SEC fans are going to have a conniption over a Big Ten team getting into the big dance again, but Ohio State is going to make up for past sins. With wins over Michigan State, at Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and at Michigan, in yet another classic, the Buckeyes will earn more respect than it?ll likely receive, and on a mission, they?re not going to make the same mistake two years in a row.

1. Ohio State Score: 0.9416[FONT=verdana, arial, sans serif]
Some Buckeye fans are sure to be up in arms after assuming they'd be number one across the board, but remember, all that matters is being in the top two of the discussion, and number one is number one. The computers like South Florida, but the humans like Ohio State, and in the new world of the BCS, the living, breathing people are what matters most. It's all there for the taking for the Buckeyes, but there aren't any walks in the part the rest of the way. If they get into a second straight title game, they'll have earned it after a finishing kick with road games against Penn State and Michigan and home dates with Michigan State, Wisconsin and Illinois.
predicted wins: Michigan State, at Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, at Michigan
predicted losses: none
predicted record: 12-0
predicted bowl: BCS Championship
toughest test: at Michigan

Gator memories motivate Buckeyes Ohio State knows it can't take ranking for granted

By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Wednesday, Oct 17, 2007

COLUMBUS: The vacation is over for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
After drubbing Kent State University on Saturday, OSU finds itself in control of its collective destinies: the Big Ten Conference title and possible national championship.
Currently ranked atop the BCS Standings, the team must win out to claim a place in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans on Jan. 7, but it's memories of last January that still linger in some team members' memories and leave a bitter taste in their mouths.
''We got smacked in the mouth in January and, to be quite honest with you, I'm still feeling it,'' defensive tackle Dexter Larimore said.
''Every time I walk on the field, I think about how we got smacked in the mouth in January.''

Ohio State Buckeyes, South Florida Bulls very different

Wednesday, October 17, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- When Jim Tressel arrived at Ohio State in 2001, he started drawing up plans for what wound up as a $21 million renovation to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Around the same time, South Florida's football coaches were just hoping to move their offices out of two double-wide trailers.
"We had to reroute our buses that had the recruits so we wouldn't ever go by the trailers," USF defensive coordinator Wally Burnham said. "We had to sell a dream."

Tressel: One is the scariest number
Wednesday, October 17, 2007
BY Mike Popovich
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Todd Boeckman woke up Sunday knowing he was the starting quarterback for the top-ranked college football team in the nation.

The congratulatory messages were there on the Ohio State junior?s cell phone.

?I had a lot of text and voice mails about that,? Boeckman said. ?It?s something I always dreamt about, just being a part of Ohio State and being the No. 1 team in the country.?

How Boeckman and the rest of his teammates handle being No. 1 will factor into whether they stay on top or fall like other No. 1s have this year.

The Buckeyes (7-0) enter the stretch run of the regular season in control of their own destiny. If they win out, they will play for a national title for a second straight year.

Some of the players already know what it is like to have such a target on their backs. Ohio State was No. 1 all last season before the national championship game against Florida.

Buckeyes, Tressel in perilous spot again
History a valuable lesson for No. 1 team

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - Jim Tressel knows his Buckeyes could be stepping into a very familiar minefield. When the 7-0 Buckeyes emerged from last weekend's schedule of games as the last national power left standing, they claimed the No. 1 ranking - almost by default. With five Big Ten games remaining - all against teams that currently hold 5-2 records (Michigan State, Penn State, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan) - Ohio State is a prize all five could use to dramatically enhance their own standing.
