College football/Ohio State report
Buckeyes aren't blinded by their rank Tressel says team needs to maintain its focus to finish season No.1
By George M. Thomas Beacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Wednesday, Oct 03, 2007
COLUMBUS: Jim Tressel and the Ohio State Buckeyes turned on the news Sunday and found themselves in a familiar position: ranked among the five best football teams in the country.
After a wild weekend in college football that saw Oklahoma, Florida, West Virginia and Texas all ranked higher than the then-No. 8 Buckeyes fall in upsets, OSU now stands at No. 4 in the country and possesses a legitimate shot at making another run toward the national championship.
To let Tressel tell it, the issue of the team's ranking never popped up after the win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers 30-7 on Saturday night.
''No, in the locker room after the game, we were most anxious to go home. It was whatever time at night, and they weren't ready for any epiphany from me about anything,'' Tressel said in his weekly news conference Tuesday afternoon.

Young Buckeyes maturing into title contender
Tuesday, October 2, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS Nothing in college football surprises Jim Tressel. After a bloody Saturday that left four of the country?s top seven programs with a loss, Ohio State took advantage with a road win and moved up four spots to No. 4.

?I?m old and patient, so nothing surprises me,? Tressel said.

He may not be convinced OSU is worthy of ranked No. 4. The Buckeyes aren?t so sure, either.

They will find out Saturday night if pollsters have them properly pegged. OSU plays its second road primetime game in the Big Ten against No. 20 Purdue, in front of ESPN?s national audience.

Ohio State's climb in poll due to misfortune of others
Buckeyes face first ranked team

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State Buckeyes leap-frogged from a No. 8 ranking to No. 4 in the country a day after beating lowly Minnesota 30-7 on Saturday night. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, aware that the move up the ladder came about due to upset losses by other ranked teams, and was not due to style points earned in his team's win over the Golden Gophers, said the rankings are a non-issue at this point. "We're a young team, but I would like to think that we're mature enough to think that on October second, where you're ranked doesn't really have much credence," Tressel said. "Hopefully, they'll stay focused on the task at hand as to what we need to get better at, and I think they will."

Tressel not worried about rankings yet
JASON LLOYD, Morning Journal Writer

COLUMBUS -- Jim Tressel has never been one to pay much attention to the polls before the end of November, so the first week in October is far too early for him to celebrate the Buckeyes' No. 4 ranking.

''We're a young team, but I would like to think that we're mature enough to think on Oct. 2, where you're ranked doesn't really have much credence,'' he said. ''Hopefully they'll stay focused on the task at hand as to what we need to get better at, and I think they will.''

Once the top-ranked Buckeyes survived last year's September unbeaten, the rest of the schedule was a runaway train rolling downhill until the Michigan game. This season has been the exact opposite.

Lifted by upsets, Bucks leery of one
Know No. 23 Purdue could halt their poll rise
BY RUSTY MILLER | THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

COLUMBUS - This wasn't the way the season was supposed to go for a young Ohio State team.
The Buckeyes were blessed with a weak early schedule, from which they hoped to glean experience and get comfortable with their roles before moving on to what passes for the toughies in the Big Ten in the last half of the season.
Instead, little more than a month in, the Buckeyes find themselves ranked No. 4.

OSU players notice rankings, but say they?re unaffected

Jim Naveau | [email protected] - 10.05.2007
[FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]COLUMBUS ? There are long-term rewards and short-term rewards. That?s the way Ohio State defensive lineman Doug Worthington looked at suddenly finding the Buckeyes ranked No. 4 in this week?s Associated Press college football poll.
The long-term payoff of that is something that can only be speculated about. And, as far as short-term benefits, he hasn?t seen any yet.
?It?s not like they give us a day off (from practice) because we?re fourth,? Worthington said, with a smile earlier this week.
No. 4 Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) doesn?t appear headed for a day off when it plays for the first time since jumping four spots in the poll at No. 23 Purdue (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) on Saturday night.

OSU's road smoother than other top teams

Along a bar rail Saturday night, inside an Irish pub with dim lights, flat-screen televisions and cold, cold refrigerators, there were men wearing A.J. Hawk jerseys and rooting for Florida. No doubt, this scene was being duplicated in gin joints up and down High Street, not to mention all those Applebee's outside the beltway. The Buckeyes had taken care of Purdue on the road, and now their loyal legions were pulling for the Gators. Ah, the madness.

YOU know how much the Yankees irritate you right now? How much you'd love to shove a rotten apple into the Big Apple?

Today, right around the midpoint of the college football season, that's how the rest of the college football world feels about Ohio State.

Right or wrong, fair or foul, the Buckeyes are to college football what the Yankees are to baseball: That roster full of superstars the rest of the world loves to hate.

Near the end of Saturday night's game, as the Buckeyes were throwing down their shovels and digging the dirt out from under their fingernails, a couple of old-time Purdue supporters were sitting in the press box grumbling about Ohio State's talent.

''They've still got some great athletes,'' one said.

Buckeyes stay clear of top 10 turmoil

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

In college football, stepping on the back of the downfallen not only is an accepted practice, usually it's the only way to get ahead. So, don't expect apologies this week from the teams now ranked second, third and fourth in the polls -- California, Ohio State and Boston College. Like top-ranked Louisiana State and fifth-ranked South Florida, they have persevered -- meaning, won -- while the teams ahead of them have lost.

Caught the Purdue game from the south end zone. Things that don't concern me: The Defense. The development of Donald Washington and Chekwa has been a joy to watch and the bucks have solid linebackers backing up the #1s. The kicking game is firm. (If Cooper had had the kickers that Tressel gets he'd have won at least one, maybe two, NCS.) Boeckman as a QB. Henson isn't going to be replacing anyone any time soon.Moe Wells is showing signs of coming on. Had some very nice runs. Maybe they find a way to get Roy Small into the running game.

Things that do concern me: run blocking by an experienced line is still not there. How nicked up are Beanie and Sain? Sain was not the same runner Saturday night that I saw two weeks ago. That seems to bring us to a point where Mo Wells carries the load by himself.

It would be great if we could get a healthy Beanie and Sain back for the last half of the season by living on passing against Kent State.

I just got a feeling that there will be at least one game this year where our offense comes out flat... where it will be 3-and-outs followed by 3-and-outs. When we get into a game like that, I really hope that our D will be ready. To an extent this happened against Akron but that was more due to a buttoned down playbook than anything else. Think '05 MSU - our defense (and John L. Smith's shit-for-brains coaching ability) kept us in that game long enough for our offense to figure out what the hell was going on and pull out a win.

If/When our offense doesn't fire on all cylinders, I just hope it isn't at PSU or Michigan.

Football: By a vote of the team, the Jack Tatum Hit of the Week award has been given to OSU athletic trainer Doug Calland for a hit he made on Beanie Wells during a sideline entanglement during the Purdue game.
According to a release from the OSU Department of Athletics, Calland was a landslide winner in a raucous team vote.
Congratulations Doug.
