Hoop stars moonlight as 'coaches' in spring game

Honorary coaches Butler, Conley will be aided by title-game teammates.

COLUMBUS ? Talk about having a possible lame-duck coach.
Basketball point guard Mike Conley Jr. will be an honorary head coach in Ohio State's annual intrasquad Scarlet vs. Gray spring football game on Saturday.

Conley, along with high school classmate and friend Greg Oden, led the Buckeyes to a 35-4 record and the national championship game. Now he, Oden and a third freshman, Dunbar High School grad Daequan Cook, are contemplating a jump to the NBA.

COLUMBUS - Ohio State's quarterback picture won't get much clearer on Saturday with Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton each assigned to play for both sides in the Scarlet and Gray spring game.
The two sides are typically drafted by the seniors, but with this team featuring just five senior scholarship players, all redshirt juniors were assigned to teams along with the seniors. That meant redshirt junior Todd Boeckman was assigned to the Scarlet team. The Scarlet then drafted Schoenhoft, but will get him only for the first half. He'll join the Gray team for the second half, while Henton will play for the Gray in the first half and for both teams in the second half.

I can see it now: Schoenhoft's team is up by 14 points going into the half, and then they're magicly DOWN by 14 coming out of the half. I'm glad they don't trade players in real games. That would be weird.

I see what you're saying, but I'm sure that Rob Schoenhoft is more concerned about his individual performance (on both squads) to put himself in the best position at the end of Spring ball.

It obviously wouldn't work in any other circumstance, but for a Spring Game, practice, etc. when you're trying to impress your coaches with every opportunity you get I doubt anyone would even "sluff off" a little in say the last two minutes of the half thinking that "hey, if I don't score here, then my 2nd half team and I will have a better shot to come away with the W.

I know you weren't seriously suggesting that...so why did I respond, don't know....you're right, that would be weird.

I'll stop talking now...Carry on...nothing to see here. :wink2:

EDIT

Padraig says Padraig just wanted to divert attention from Slick Rick's post.

Yeah. I just think it's weird when people change teams. It's like when you're playing a pick-up basketball game, and the one team is crushing the other. Change teams around a little and see if they can catch up a little.

That's the nicest thing anyone's done for me in a while.

Hello

I am new to this board. Is it a requirement to speak in third person? If so here we go. Gut Wrench Gary says that Gut Wrench Gary is a Buckeye alum now living down south in MS. Gut Wrench Gary says that the Buckeyes lost some key players from last years team, but Gut Wrench Gary thinks that Coach Tressel will reload. Gut Wrench Gary hopes to make it to the horseshoe this year for some games.

When this third person thing dies out, let's start another pointless trend of calling eachother by bazaar nicknames that make no sense. I want to be Sir Poopsalot.

On the topic of the spring game, what was the attendance last year, and what do we expect this year? 45K?

Per the Buckeyes official site, last year attendance was 63,649.

COLUMBUS, Ohio: Troy Smith played just one series but that was all the Scarlet team needed Saturday in a 12-0 win over the Gray squad in Ohio State's annual spring game. A crowd of 63,649 was on hand for the game in Ohio Stadium, including a walk-up gate of 23,600.

45K would be a good crowd - if the weather holds up I think they can crack 50K.
