To be real about it, we are starting to hit our stride and would probably handle every team outside the top 10 no problem, with the possible exception of BG, who is having a fantastic year and off to a great start. We are likely to meet up with them in the Midwest championships. I think if we had another shot at Tennessee right now the outcome might be a little different. It surprises me not to see Minnesota somewhere in the top 25. Either way, we would run teams like Vassar, Buffalo, the Merchant Marines, Harvard, Delaware and Kutztown right off of the field. We are still a young team but we are starting to come together as a unit. This team has a focus that teams of the past few years have lacked.

Just a reminder about what this weekend is...I don't care if it's rugby, football, Tiddlywinks, synchronized underwater basket weaving or a bake sale...you all know what it means when a team from OSU straps it on against the Maize and Blue:

It would be easy to look past Michigan considering we beat OU 46-5 and Michigan lost to the Bobcats 31-13 (although their match report says they were without 5 starting forwards, although that shouldn't really matter because that is where we are strongest), but you can bet they are going to throw everything they ahve at us. UM's other results this year were a 25-10 win over Central Michigan, a 21-13 loss to Grand Valley State and a 66-7 win over Ferris State. Suffice it to say they haven't seen anybody of our caliber so far this year. Should be an interesting match-up.

I guess part of being a good team is getting a win when you don't have your best stuff and the other team has wagered their entire season on beating you. That what happened yesterday...tough match against a team that openly admitted they had this date circled on the calendar but we came away with a win, which against the Maize and Blue is always a good thing...

AmericanRugbyNews.com Boston College celebrates anniversary with big win

And in the Midwest, #25 Ohio State took care of business against Michigan winning 27-15 after leading 12-10 at the half. The Buckeyes scored four tries, one by flyhalf Nate Ebner who was back in the fray after the national U-20s assembly.

"Michigan's defense was very tough and well organized," Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told ARN. "Their attack produced many fast balls and allowed lots of long runs. Their #10 played a great game. Those two things allowed Michigan to compete at the point of attack again and again. Kudos to their coach, ex-Midwest #8 Dave Perpich."

OSU will host Indiana in the first round of the Midwest playoffs next weekend. Other matchups will be Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Minnesota, Ohio University at #18 Bowling Green, and Wisconsin-Stout at Northern Iowa. The winners will advance to the Midwest Finals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on November 3-4.

First off, this week's updated rankings (FWIW, we are ranked #12 in the Goff poll):

AmericanRugbyNews.com College rankings: Boston College improves

The latest batch of results from around the country again has caused some movement in the ARN rankings, and again for the most part it has all taken place in the bottom half of the Down Under Endeavours Top 25.

The team that has benefited the most this week is Boston College. The Eagles have leapfrogged a couple of other teams following their victorious 40th anniversary match, while Texas A&M has gone the other way on the back of a couple of losses on the road in Utah.

UC Davis also has profited from other teams? misfortunes even though they?re still idle. The Aggies have a new head coach in Andy Malpass, who steps in to fill the void created by Steve Gray?s decision to step down.

Ohio State moves up a spot after another good win, Rutgers falls one place behind a loss in the final regular season game in the Met New York Conference, while Oklahoma reappears in the rankings after a lengthy hiatus. The Sooners have been racking up some impressive Ws along the way. And Vassar dropped out altogether following their loss to Columbia in Met New York, a result that knocked the Brewers out of contention for a shot at a place in the Northeast playoffs.

After plugging in the data, accounting for Power Ratings, and looking at the head-to-heads, here is the latest Down Under Endeavours Top 25.

1 (1) California (idle) [5]
2 (2) BYU (3-0) [5]
3 (3) Navy (5-0-1) [4]
4 (4) St Mary?s (idle) [5]
5 (5) Army (6-0) [2]
6 (6) Kutztown (5-0) [4]
7 (7) Delaware (4-1) [4]
8 (8) Cal Poly (idle) [3]
9 (9) Tennessee (4-0) [2]
10 (10) Utah (4-1) [5]
11 (11) Wyoming (3-0) [3]
12 (12) UC Santa Barbara (idle) [3]
13 (14) UC Davis (idle) [5]
14 (16) Boston College (4-1-1) [2]
15 (15) Harvard (3-1-2) [2]
16 (13) Texas A&M (0-2) [3]
17 (17) San Diego State (0-1) [3]
18 (18) Bowling Green (7-0) [1]
19 (19) Penn State (2-3) [4]
20 (20) USMMA (7-0) [2]
21 (21) Buffalo (6-0) [2]
22 (22) Dartmouth (4-1-1) [2]
23 (unranked) Oklahoma (4-0) [3]
24 (25) Ohio State (4-3) [1]
25 (24) Rutgers (5-2) [2]

Now on to the more important business...the Midwest tournament begins this weekend with D1 quarterfinals. We are lucky to once again welcome in a team that dropped the hammer on us during our dismal season last year.

Saturday, October 27th 1:00 PM - Beekman Park

Indiana reached this point in the season by way of a 17-10 win at Michigan State and a 40-5 loss at home against a good Bowling Green team. All week we tried to hammer away at our player's sense of pride by laying out goals for this weekend as well as reminding them what it felt like to be on the wrong side of a 51-26 ass-pounding at the hand of the Hooisers at home last year in the consolation game of the Midwest Championships.

In the other Midwest quarterfinals, Minnesota will host UW-Milwaukee, OU will host Bowling Green and Northern Iowa will host UW-Stout. I would expect Minnesota, BG and Northern Iowa to advance.

GO BUCKS!!!

First the latest poll:

AmericanRugbyNews.com Top 25: lots of movement

This week sees one of the most tumultuous run of changes to the Down Under Endeavours Top 25 since their inception. Following a weekend of upsets, playoffs, and big tournaments, ten teams move up, nine drop, three debut, and three others disappear.

The biggest improvers are Dartmouth and Texas A&M. The Big Green finished second in New England, while the Aggies had a winning run in the inaugural Border Wars tournament in Dallas. Other teams on the move in the right direction include Utah, Kutztown, Delaware, Harvard, Bowling Green, Ohio State, Penn State and Buffalo.

Cal Poly has taken the biggest tumble behind a winless road trip to Utah. Other teams taking a dive include St Mary?s, Army, Tennessee, Wyoming, Boston College, San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis. They?ve all slipped because of crucial losses or simply because they?re idle. Rutgers, USMMA and Oklahoma have fallen out of the rankings completely. The Black Death and Mariners bid us farewell because their runs have come to an end, while the Sooners also say goodbye after being trounced in Dallas.

Making their first appearances of the 2007/08 season are Colorado, Minnesota and Nebraska. The Buffaloes have qualified for the Western Conference playoffs, the Golden Gophers are into the Midwest semifinals, and the Huskers are poised to advance in the West. After keying the truckload of data into the ARN spreadsheet, here is this week?s Down Under Endeavours Top 25.

1 (1) California (idle) [5]
2 (2) BYU (4-0) [5]
3 (3) Navy (5-0-1) [4]
4 (10) Utah (5-1) [5]

9 (15) Harvard (4-1-2) [2]
10 (5) Army (6-1) [2]
11 (9) Tennessee (4-1) [2]
12 (11) Wyoming (3-1) [3]
13 (22) Dartmouth (5-1-1) [2]

19 (14) Boston College (4-2-1) [2]
20 (21) Buffalo (6-0) [2]
21 (8) Cal Poly (0-2) [3]
22 (unranked) Nebraska (4-1) [3]
23 (17) San Diego State (0-1) [3]
24 (12) UC Santa Barbara (idle) [3]
25 (13) UC Davis (idle) [5]

This weekend is Midwest Championship weekend. We will face off with defending champs Minnesota on Saturday, with the winner taking on the winner of Bowling Green and Northern Iowa match for an automatic bid to the Sweet 16 in the national tournament next Spring. It was revealed today that the Midwest will get a total of two bids to the Sweet 16, which is a bit surprising based on the fact that Purdue and Minnesota went a combined 0-4 last year.

Too sick to even talk about it until now...lost an extremely pysical game to the defending champs, Minnesota, on Saturday. Got down 5-0 after 23 seconds, down 20-3 at the half and then battled back to within a point with 12 minutes to go but couldn't get over the hump. Gave up two stupid late trys and lost 44-31. Pounded on UNI on Sunday with the hopes of being able to challenge BG for the #2 spot if they lost to Minnesota, only to have Minnesota not even show up for the championship. BG wins the Midwest, Minnesota finishes second and we finish third. Top two seeds go to the Sweet 16...so we won't be playing a meaningful game again until next Fall. The good news is we are a completely different team than we were this time last year (on the heels of getting beat by Minnesota 47-0 at Midwests). We certainly took major strides towards returning the program to where it belongs this year. Now we just need another solid recruiting class and some player development, especially in the backs, before we get to next Fall.

GO BUCKS!!!

Theres a chance I will be doing online classes with tOSU soon.. if I end up doing so, any chance I can be lacing up my boots with you guys?

Honestly, playing is a big factor in me going back to tOSU or just doing my real estate classes at a Hondros/C State..

I know off campus students can play, but never advance to A-Side until they get on main campus, at least thats what Rooney told me a few years ago?
