AmericanRugbyNews.com College Top 25

There has been plenty of movement on the Down Under Endeavours Top 25 after the opening round of games marking the start of the new collegiate season. No fewer than seventeen teams have moved either up or down.

The biggest improver is Ohio State, which checks in at #25 this week replacing fellow Midwest side Minnesota, after upsetting the previously highly ranked Penn State. The Buckeyes jump back into the rankings after a lengthy hiatus by virtue of their defeat of a team from a Conference with a higher Power Rating.

Conversely, the Nittany Lions take the heaviest fall because they were beaten by a side from a Conference with a lower Power Rating. In all, eleven teams climb the rankings, while four others besides PSU drop, and the Golden Gophers fall out altogether. So, with all the data plugged into the ARN spreadsheet, here is this week?s Down Under Endeavours Top 25.

1 (1) California (idle) [5]
2 (2) BYU (idle) [5]
3 (3) Navy (1-0) [4]
4 (5) St Mary?s (idle) [5]
5 (6) Cal Poly (idle) [3]
6 (7) Utah (idle) [5]
7 (9) Army (1-0) [2]
8 (10) Kutztown (1-0) [4]
9 (11) Delaware (1-0) [4]
10 (12) Tennessee (1-0) [2]
11 (4) Penn State (0-1) [4]
12 (13) Wyoming (1-0) [3]
13 (8) San Diego State (idle) [3]

#25 Ohio State @ #10 Tennessee
Saturday September 22nd 11:00 AM
Fulton Bottoms Rugby Field

We will find out a lot about our team tomorrow...are we as bad as we played against BG or are we as good as we played against PSU? My guess is somewhere in the middle, but there is no doubt the target on our backs got a lot bigger after beating PSU last weekend. We beat Tennessee at our place last year and they are undoubtedly looking for a little payback.

GO BUCKS!!!

Best of Luck to the Buckeyes. Im in limbo right now. Most of our players PCS'd (trasferred to other bases in military terms) Right now Im trying to develop a city team and get some of the college players who have completed thier eligability to join up with our remaining base players. I play outside center and after 8 months of playing they want me to coach too.

It's pretty simple...it's not a matter of talent, coaching, desire, fitness, etc. It's all between the ears. I can't even begin to describe how epic some of the mistakes were this weekend. Suffice it to say we have two weeks to get things straightened out mentally. This loss is especaially tough for two reasons...the win over PSU and the fact that we are 10x better than we showed. And I don't care what this article says...none of the staff was pleased after this game. If anything, we were pleased by the play of the younger guys on the B-side, who thoroughly dominated their game.

AmericanRugbyNews.com Tennessee beats Ohio State

Despite some mercurial play by former national U-19 flyhalf Nate Ebner, Ohio State succumbed to hosts Tennessee 33-19 in a much-anticipated contest Saturday in Knoxville, TN. The Volunteers led 16-9 at the half.

In the end it was a three tries to one margin for Tennessee, although it was a tough, grinding kind of game and both teams knew they?d been in a match at the end of the 80 minutes. Ebner potted three first half penalty goals to register all of the Buckeyes? points through the first forty, two of them before the Vols got on the board.

Into the second quarter of the contest, the home team started to find its rhythm and together with some enterprising kicking in general play, Tennessee slowly started to take control of proceedings. Try-scorers included Joel Fugate, Jonathan Brown and Jimi Reid. Winger Reid also was perfect on the day with his goal kicking, converting all three tries and landing three penalties. Andrew Melroy put over a drop goal to round out the Vols? scoring.

?It was obvious that in some ways it?s still early in the season for both sides. Neither side seemed to get any traction,? Tennessee head coach Butch Robertson told ARN. ?There was a lot of rucking and pounding it up through the forwards, which is what you expect against Ohio State.?

Ohio State scored a try in the second half to stay in touch, but the Buckeyes weren't able to bridge the gap. In spite of the loss, head coach Tom Rooney was reasonably pleased with his team's performance.

Elsewhere, Bowling Green maintained its unbeaten form with an 88-12 victory over Ferris State.

Coasted to a 75-8 victory over IUP this past Saturday. One more tune-up before the real Midwest pool play begins. We travel to one of the toughest places to play this weekend, year in and year out...Annapolis. More details to follow later in the week...

AmericanRugbyNews.com Midwest pool play opens

#25 Ohio State got back on track Saturday with a 75-8 pounding of IUP in the opening round of the Midwest championship pool play.

The Buckeyes led 48-3 at the half and never looked in danger of dropping the contest.

“The best part is we've had over 80 kids at practices and some athletes,” said Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney. “It’s so much fun to see young enthusiasm, and lots of future.”

Ohio State plays Navy next week but will be without their main playmaker Nate Ebner. The smart pivot will be at a national U-20s assembly.

Elsewhere, Indiana beat Michigan State 17-10.

Meantime, #24 Bowling Green just keeps on keeping on and racked up another huge score in thrashing Central Michigan 102-0 in a Michigan league game.

Yup Ebs and Kurt are both studs. I played with them my senior year, they were sophmores at the time..

Joe Herrbach - I think he's still at OSU and if he wasn't lazy/hurt all the time, he could become a damn good player

Jesse Fields - went to OSU for a quarter i think before going to another school, dosen't play anymore.. him and coach Ebner used to get into it at practice.. kid is crazy fast, and a very aggresive player

Tommy Fetters - he's a little nuts now-a-days, he plays for scioto valley from what i hear, fucking huge and mean player.. prop opposite from me.

Nick Masters - He was a first year player, but wasn't bad at all, he's starting scrumhalf over at Xavier for the last 2 years

Big Jon Willis - best 8 man in central ohio that year, never went to school afterwards, stopped playing

Ian Castle - He'll be at OSU I believe, very good scrum half, he was a sophmore that year.. besides the occasional stupid ass mistakes he was a pretty smart player

Jon Cook - at CSCC, he was a first year player that year, loves to hit and was a tough tackle even for the pigs.

I went to 3 or 4 practices for tOSU RFC after the season had begun and started B Side against BGSU after my second practice. Due to working full-time, i couldn't make any more practices and now no longer attend tOSU, i miss the game a lot.

We beat the worms (first team to do it a few years at that time) that year and lost only our first game of the season and the last. 7's over the summer, we won our first 4 tournys and came in second place to St Eds in a tourny up north and we're seeded in a national tournment out in Iowa or someplace.

Best team I ever played on, and a team in ever sense of the word. Ahh, the glory days of senior year rugby

You guys are getting 2 great players in Ebner and Kurt, and two good guys.

Ian has not worked out with us this year. Herbach is in the rotation on the B/C side deep three. Harper has been out with an injury since the first game of the season @ BG.

Good luck the rest of the way coach, I've never seen Kurt go a full season w/o some sort of injury, hopefully that will end and he'll produce for you guys on the pitch

THe moneky is officially off our backs...I think it is safe to say we are well on our way back. Opened up our Midwest pool play with a fairly thorough pasting of OU. After struggling worse than I thought possible last year and seeing those struggles culminate in two losses to OU, it is great to see that we are certainly on our way back to where we belong.

Here is a quick recap:

AmericanRugbyNews.com Utah belts San Diego State

Meantime, #25 Ohio State has secured a spot in the Midwest Championships later this month with a 46-5 decision over rivals Ohio in pool play Saturday in Columbus, OH. The Buckeyes led 15-5 at halftime.

The turning point of the game came in the first ten minutes of the second half when OSU scored two quick tries. The first was a pushover from five meters out scored by eightman Brandon Jewett, and then from the ensuing kickoff, Jewett broke a long run that saw the ball go through six sets of hands before lock Eric Schulte finished it off in the try zone.

The Buckeyes scored three more tries in the closing ten minutes to finish the day, all coming from quick taps and long runs.

"There were lots of missed opportunities, but we beat an opponent that has beaten us the last two outings," said Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney. "Slowly it's coming together."

This weekend is one that everyone looks forward to...our final pool match against and I couldn't be happier who it is against...
