2007 NFL Draft (Projections/Mock Drafts/Evaluations/Draft)

A good situation for the browns, given they address their major needs via free agency. They draft Joe Thomas in the first round, They draft Daymeion Hughes in the second round, They draft Quinn Pitcock/or Justin Harrell in the third round, and Jay Alford/or Brandon Mebane in the fourth round. After that would be a time for project-like players. With these selections, you solidified your offense with a tackle that would be the anchor for the next 10 years. Hughes would be a great corner that would fit nicely in our system and also a great value at that pick. Picks 3 and 4 will probably pay more dividends than the other pics, with the pick of Pitcock/or Harrell and Alford/Mebane would be an upgrade from the likes of Alvin Mckinley and Orpheus Roye. This will give the browns the athletic 3-4 defensive ends they need to hold up against the run and offer a pass rush. Now in rounds 5 and later, you can spend a pick on guys who flew up under the radar like a Steve Smith from USC and in the 6th round you can use the pick on a guy like Josh Beekman from BC. This is just a thought

I still don't undestand why everyone wants their team to move down? You are likely to lose your pick if you are wanting an established player and if you just want to swap spots, you are only likely to get another pick.

It seems to me the Fightin' Fins need to get younger on D. Adams or the like would seem to be a good fit from an outsiders view.

Swapping spots should lead to an extra pick or a higher one in the next round for Miami. There isn't one particular area of need but multiple really. If you can grab two players close together you have a chance of addressing multiple needs rather than hoping the one guy you do pick totally kicks ass and saves your season for you.

A lot of different philosophies here. My opinion is that the defense needs tweaked, not overhauled. Lock down corner and maybe a run stuffer in the middle. Obviously they could stand to get younger but we can do that later in the draft. The offense has some some issues that may not be able to be fixed in one season. The offensive line is just, well, offensive! They could get Ricky back this season to give Ronnie Brown a breather and stay healthy. They don't have a healthy QB or one who can keep from throwing it to the other team. WR is decent counting the TE as a receiver. Free agency seems the best way to improve the offense so I'd go for that lock down corner in the draft or a great run stuffer.

I think a lot of times fans want to trade down because there are so many needs that it sounds better to get several players.
For instance, as a Browns fan, I would much rather see us get Pitcock and Brown than just pick up Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas. I think it's rare that there is a true playmaker in the top of the draft that can turn a team around all by themselves.

True, but the only way to get a true playmaker is in the draft. And even then , it's almost always when you have an early pick. Grunt player needs can be addressed via free agency or later in the draft. Six of the 10 AFC Pro Bowl lineman for this season were taken with the #48 pick or later, including 2 UFA's.

I'm not sure if Thomas is worth the risk of a top 5-6 pick. If you're a team that is close to contention, with ot being your clear weakness, then yes, he would be worth the risk. But, if you're a team that is loaded with holes, then you should probably try to address the line needs later and get a playmaker, if available, first.

The draft is a big crapshoot. The last "Sure Thing" lineman was Gallery and he has been below average at best.

Its hard to say and I agree with Brutus about Gallery....he was touted as a once-a-decade LT sure shot Pro Bowl player.

I think Peterson is a guy that can come in and make an immediate impact. He has home run potential every time he touches the ball. I hope his carries get limited so he doesn't get worn down early on (carnell williams). If he can come in, make some highlight reel runs, fans can at least get excited about him for future years to come. I think he'll really help take the pressure of which ever QB ends up calling signals for us next season.

I haven't liked some of the coaching hires this offseason, but I do like the Chud hiring. With Peterson and (hopefully) competent playcalling (fuck you carthon) I'm a little optimistic about things on offense.

I agree on principal, but it's not like any of these teams at the top of the draft have shown a penchant for finding quality UFAs (Fraser notwithstanding) or drafting lineman well late in the draft. It's largely the reason our lines are still crap, IMO.
I could also make this same arguments for RBs and WRs. Every year there are some RBs or WRs that come from late in the draft and turn out to be really good.
The only great "playmaker" I'm sold on this year is Calvin. But w/o a QB and OL to get the ball to him, he'd be an even bigger waste in Cleveland than he was at Georgia Tech.
As for Thomas, nothing about him screams "sure-fire pro bowler" to me. He's got skills, technique -- but everything I've heard seems to indicate that Levi Brown has better upside and more tenacity. IMO, both seem to take off some plays. But on the Browns... either of these guys could contribute for a long time. The only reason to ditch a guy like Gallery is because of the obscene amount of money he's getting paid. Which takes me back to trading out of the top-5 where we can still get a guy like Levi Brown and pick up another high draft pick or quality want-away.
Now I'll just wait for King to confuse normative and positive statements once again...

So, basically, you're not sold on Peterson?

I love AP, but if I were a Browns fan, I would run scarrrreddddd from him. The Browns tendency to draft oft injured players (or, possibly lack of ability to protect their skill players) with his injury history should be a huge red flag in a laundry basket full of tighty whities.

I didn't really need help with the structure of draft trades, more the concepts behind why every fan seems to want to move down.

I remember a few years back my team had the top pick and I wasn't sold on that Carson Palmer guy. Just didn't seem to have what it took and we (here is that phrase again) had so many areas of need.

There is a reason these teams have the top picks, they need the most talent to compete. While you can add depth with more picks, you can't add elite talent, the kind that can carry a franchise when it needs it most, without using those picks.

Of course there are always the Calstons who are diamonds in the rough and the Gallery's who can't miss, yet find a way. But in the end, those picks are very valuable.

Each team has a unique situation and I am not saying your Dolphins would not benefit from your suggestion. Just wondering why so many fans seem to think it is the easy solution to their teams problems.

Wimbley got injured once, on a chop block, and missed a couple of games. AP injured himself for most of a season (clavicle) one year and another year he picked up some nagging injuries doing his job. AP has missed significant playtime in 2 seasons and hasn't gone through a single season uninjured since his Freshman year.
Given that RB is one of the most physically demanding positions and players get burned out pretty quick, I think it's pretty ridiculous to pass off his injuries. I'd be fine if the Browns did pick him -- he could turn out to be great and is probably worth the risk-- but he does come with major injury and durability concerns.
