2007 Cavs Free Agent/Trade Rumors

Shawn Marion just doesn't fit this team's offensive profile. If the Cavs actually intend to start running the court... maybe. Getting rid of Gooden leaves this team with zero low-post presence on offense. Z plays like he's 6'6" most of the time and Varejao - he's good for about one or two cuts to the basket per game. Gooden is the only player on this team who can back somebody down and finish with strength.

Also, count me among those that wouldn't want to see the Cavs go after Billups - even if it were a financial possibility. I think he's somewhat overrated. The Pistons won by playing very good team basketball - but the media and the NBA are very star-driven, so I think they helped make a star of Billups. Don't get me wrong, I think he's a solid player. After bouncing around so much in his career and given his age (he'll turn 31 this year) this'll be his last chance to cash in on a big contract. He'll probably get a Ben Wallace-size payday, and I think there are better values that the Cavs can explore.

Bill Simmons had a very good take on Billups. Aside from one great run in the playoffs, he's never really done anything to establish himself as an elite pg. He's never had a really killer regular season, it's just that one playoff run, and that run earned him his nickname and it will dupe some team like Atlanta into giving him 10+ million per.

I also don't think a Marion trade makes sense. Firstly, Marion doesn't really fit our offense. Secondly, Gooden doesn't really fit Phoenix's offense. Gooden has never really run the floor well at all(Z runs the floor better than Gooden IMO, which I don't really understand at all). He's a good spot up shooter, but he won't hit threes, he's not versatile defensively(he can guard PF and that's it, and he's about average defensively). He can be good on the boards, but I really don't see how he would fit on their team. He's basically a less athletic and explosive Amare.

Since Marion was brought up, I'm hearing there's a definite possibility he goes to Washington for Jamison(whose contract comes off the books after this season).

I know Marion doesn't really fit. But he is afterall the Matrix.

But I highlighted that deal to show that we do have tradable pieces and if Phoenix decides to trade Marion and is having a hard time doing so a 3rd team might need to get involved and that is when that little tidbit might come in handy as the Cavs come in to save the day to help the trade go through and grab some key pieces (and maybe some draft picks along the way).

Marion would fit if we find that PG to push the offense and an assistant or new coach, crossing my fingers, that lets him. LBJ will be unstoppable in an uptempo game and Boobie flashing to the 3point arc will only get more open shots along with Sasha. Z being the weak link, as always, has to learn some transition defense and better use of his bricks, I mean hands. I would almost be willing to sacrifice Z on the defense with a PG that can push and dish to the other 3 on the break or drive and dish to Z in the half court. Mike Conley is the perfect fit.:( Who can we sell to end up with Mike?

Anyone know why Ferry would be this high on this guy?

Washington Post -
Meantime, according to a league source, the Nets and Cavaliers are prepared to offer five-year contracts with a first-year salary of around $4 million to Wizards restricted free agent forward Andray Blatche when the free agency period opens July 1.

Should Blatche sign with another team, the Wizards would have seven days to match the offer and sources indicated yesterday that Ernie Grunfeld plans on keeping Blatche, who is entering his third season with the team. [READ]

I frequent a Maryland board, and a lot of them were clamoring for Blatche to play more over Haywood/Thomas at the end of the season and in the playoffs. It might be like a Diop situation where he flourishes outside the team that drafted him.

I'm hoping Ferry knows something no one else does(aside from the Nets apparently). We do need a back up big IMO, so I wouldn't be opposed to this move, just as long as we get a PG and a shooter as well.

Likely looking ahead to life after Wild Thing. I'd hate to see Andy go, but he's going to get a lot of money from somebody.

For me, the #1 priority this offseason has to be to find an assistant that can install a consistent offensive philosophy. Brown isn't going anywhere after reaching the Finals in his second year. He's an outstanding defensive coach, but his offensive deficiency is well documented. If we can get somebody to call the offense, I have no problem having him as a head coach. After that, I'd like to see them lock Pavs up and go after a PG. I like Blake. He can run the floor adequately, is not a bad shooter and can probably be had for a reasonable price.

Definitely agree with an offensive mind on the coaching staff. I also agree that Brown should stay as coach. A team can win Championships changing coaches every 2-3 years and LBJ certainly won't benefit from having a third coach in 4 years.
