2007 Cavs Free Agent/Trade Rumors

I've heard Big Z and Shannon Brown could get a deal done for Pau Gasol, who badly wants out of Memphis...

the salaries would certainly match up well. That's actually a pretty good deal for the Cavs and Gasol doesn't run like he has cinder blocks for shoes and doesn't swat at the ball like his hands are tennis rackets.

I'd like that move, especially if Cleveland buys a pick from Phoenix as rumored, and drafts a big man.

I think they should look into Sarunas Jasikevicius for Damon Jones. Both guys could use fresh starts.
I'd take a rack of practice balls for Jones...

His contract far outweighs the worth of his 3-pt shots minus the defense...

No, but it was great for the Cavs when they pulled it off a few years ago. Maybe this time we can give Varejao and Gooden back to Orlando for Dwight Howard. That's about as big of a steal as it was for the Cavs.

That would be sick, don't even joke about something that great. My heart skipped a beat just thinking about it.

Unless we are going to get a player like Bibby, Barbosa, Kidd, etc. I say sit on our team that we have right now...

I would love to pick up Steve Blake, as he could be the backup to Hughes at the PG, and we could also see Boobie there some...I am just not sure if Boobie will develop into a pg, or play more in the Ben Gordan type 2g role...

After that I would like to see Brown improve and allow his minutes to increase...That would give us a backcourt rotation of LBJ, Boobie, Hughes, Sasha, Brown, and Blake...That gives us 6 guys that can all defend, are athletic, a couple very good shooters, and the other guys are ones you can't just leave out there like teams do with Snow...As we saw in the playoffs when Sasha and Boobie were out there, it opened the court tremendously for LBJ...

Unless we can get a draft pick and pick up another guard or can get one of the guys I mentioned above, I am fine with that lineup...If Snow, Jones, Newble want to come back and man the end of the bench that is fine with me, as they all seemed to embrace their role, and not all 12 guys that dress can see the floor and you need those guys that will keep the spirit up, and watch and recognize things out on the floor much like coaches should do...

As for the front court, I like the rotation we have, but would still like one more guy that could allow us to cut Donyell...He was good here, but he is passed his time...I hope that we can resign Wild Thing, and IMO don't trade Drew unless we can get one of the guys I mentioned above...

I caught myself at times saying get the ball to Drew during the playoffs, when he was hot, and he really stepped his D up...He is still young and with him and Andy we have a nice offensive rebounding tandem, and the only team that was able to slow them down was the Spurs, but we still got our fair share...My only thing is with Z, and he ain't going anywhere, but he is getting wear on the tires, and it is time to try and look for a replacement...

Also as Hawg has said, I would love to see guys like Humprey and Lewis get a shot here if they go undrafted...Another guy is Deshaun Wood...

Also if we could get a draft pick I would love to get Sessions the PG out of Nevada late in teh first...He is going to be a good one...

The court opened up for LBJ when Sasha and Boobie were hitting their shots from outside. Teams are making them prove they can hit them with consistency, which in the Spurs series, they obviously did not and we saw what happened.

If they could nab a shooter like Humphrey that would be nice. I think Lewis will be drafted late in the second round. Most projections have him going at that time. If he does slide out, yeah, would love to see them take a shot on him as well.

I agree with you guys about Donyell, he can be a great shooter, but he is so streaky. He is either on or off, and off more times than on it seems like and he has no presence down low and his rebounding isn't anything great. I do like Drew and he has a nice mid-range jumper, but if he makes for good trade bait for a PG that has the chance of putting this team over the top, I am all for that.

The trade of Z and Brown for Gasol is interesting and first I have heard that. Salaries do match up so that helps. The one question I think we have to ask about trading Z or Damon Jones is, what do we think the LeBron factor would be in these scenarios? LBJ is a big fan of Z and pushed hard for him to be resigned and he and Damon really seem to be tight. I know LBJ is about winning, but I think he would really have to be convinced that trading anyone on the team, especially those two guys would be a huge improvement for him to sign off on it. And you have to agree that if any big moves are made to this team, LeBron will be consulted.

I think after the Finals, Lebron knows that some changes need to be made, and I'm sure Dan Gilbert, after getting a taste of the finals, will tell James and Ferry that money won't be an issue.

I actually think a big, untalked about issue is whether James will play internationally. I was thinking about this the other day, and I honestly think he should skip international basketball. That's just so much basketball, and the East should be more competitive next year(Chicago looks to be majorly improved and the Heat should be completely healthy, and Detroit will still have enough talent to cause a lot of damage), that we can't afford to have James being tired or injured from playing a full season of basketball, playing a full playoffs, and then playing in international tourneys. I'd really prefer it if he didn't play, as selfish as that is.

Unfortunately money has to be an issue, unless you want to get into Luxury taxes. The Cavs are up against the cap, unless they make trades. Other than that, all they really have is the mid-level exception (5.5 mill).

I agree with you on international play, LBJ should sit it out. I think he will too.

I know we're up against the cap, but I was saying that considering our success, I think Gilbert will be more open to paying the tax if we overspend to get something done this offseason.

It's possible, but I would be surprised. He didn't get rich being a bad business man and as much as he wants to win a Championship, he doesn't want to lose money either.

EDIT: I just read on ESPN that Gilbert has given Ferry the option of going over the cap and into a Luxury Tax. I am pleasantly surprised. Good call Napoleonbuck. It also says that Ferry will not go crazy in resigning Varejao, if a team makes a ridiculous offer for him, they could let him walk.

I just read on ESPN, that both Ira Newble and Damon Jones have asked to be traded. Not a demand situation, just asking management about exploring trades for them. Also the Cavs may have interest in Steve Blake, which we all assumed they would. The Cavs apparently have also expressed interest in Greek guard Theo Papaloukas. The 6-foot-7 point guard has become a star for CSKA Moscow and was the main cog in the Greeks' victory over Team USA in last summer's FIBA World Championships.
This from the Akron Beacon Journal -

Sarunas Jasikevicius has made some back-channel overtures that he'd love to play for the Cavs next season after passing them up two years ago. He can become a free agent by opting out of his contract, worth $4 million.
I think we all assumed this might be talked about and some have talked about it in this thread. This idiot should have come here when we wanted him instead of going to the Pacers. I remember him saying that he felt they were closer to winning a Championship. :slappy: Not so much.

I'm not exactly an expert on financial law, but aren't teams allowed to divide their mid-level exemption between players? I'd like to see us use part of it on Sarunas and maybe get a back up big that can simply play defense and rebound.

Sarunas is a good three point shooter though, until he was buried on the bench in Golden State. He would be a good, cheap pick up.

Tell me more about this tsteele, I have not heard this rumor.

the suns did this last year as well. They are trying to keep payroll down as they are going to have to pony up serious cash for some guys in the future. They sold their draft pick last year for about $3 million. They are pcking in roughly the same area this year. I could definately see this happening.

Cleveland wants another big man that can contribute and do some grunt work down low. With the way this draft is falling talent wise, there is likely going to be someone that falls. If Cleveland has 1 or 2 guys targeted and they are on the board, Dan Gilbert won't hesitate to cut a check right then.
