2007 Cavs Free Agent/Trade Rumors

I'm not exactly an expert on financial law, but aren't teams allowed to divide their mid-level exemption between players? I'd like to see us use part of it on Sarunas and maybe get a back up big that can simply play defense and rebound.

Sarunas is a good three point shooter though, until he was buried on the bench in Golden State. He would be a good, cheap pick up.

That's a good question about the MLE. I had to look it up and here is what Wiki said:

Mid-level exception

A team is allowed to sign a player to a contract equal to the average NBA salary, even if the team is over the salary cap already, or if the signing would put them over the cap. This is known as the mid-level exception, and it can be used each season, either on one player or split up between multiple players. Contracts signed under the mid-level exception can be for up to six years. The mid-level exception in 2004-05 was $4.9 million, while in 2005-06 it is $5 million under the terms of the new CBA.

So yes, they could spit it up, and I didn't know that.
 What do you think his trade value would be?

I'd obviously love to get Redd for that role, but what will make Redd change his mind about being the #1 option?
I dont think he'd be worth much  guys here don't agree but i've seen a few posters mention he dosen't play to his players strength and IMO limited LB and co. on offense big time.. and poor game mangament.. wheter it be TOs or letting 30 seconds run off the clock in game 4 with the spurs. I will agree the D was amazing and i'll be willing to bite my tongue and see how he does next year i guess.

What would make Redd change his mind? Hopefully a phone call from LBJ and his desire to win a championship outweighing his desire to be the #1 guy on the bucks and watch the finals from his couch.

I've heard that Chauncy Billups is a free agent? If this is true, go spend the money

Cavs filling in gaps

With no draft picks, improving talent base difficult

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sportswriter

The Cavaliers' offseason has arrived, albeit later than ever. As anyone who watched the Finals knows, although they had the best season in team history, they are by no means complete.
There are several issues to watch over the summer.
The Anderson Varejao contract situation is poised to be very interesting. He's a restricted free agent, meaning the Cavs can match any offer he receives. However, it is difficult to determine his value, and therefore it could be a drawn-out process.
First, he's not a starter and probably isn't going to be. Drew Gooden is more talented overall, and he'll be making $6.4 million next season. It's hard to fathom the Cavs will want to give Varejao, who made $945,000 this season, as much as or more than Gooden.

According to Peter Vesci, the Cavs are interested in Spurs pg Beno Udrih. He's their 3rd pg and may be worth a shot. I'm assuming Brown knows a bit about him.

No friggin way would the Grizz be stupid enough to trade Gasol for Z and Shannon Brown. No way.

The best season in Cavaliers' history ended last week but a return and victory in next year's NBA Finals is possible if a major change and some tweaks are made.
Defense may win championships but if the San Antonio Spurs are the blueprint for the Cavs' success then this organization has to also include some offensive components. Not only did the Spurs prove they were one of the best defensive teams in the league but they also could score in several different ways.
Without question, LeBron James struggled. He shot 35.6 percent from the field and had 23 turnovers in the four games. The Spurs' swarmed James and no one else picked up the slack. The Cavs shot 29.3 percent from 3-point range.

Why not!? Deadly shooter, a leader, and championship rings.

It'll result in titles if they sign him..

The Cavs can only spend $5 mil on free agents. That is an NBA rule so there is no way they can get Billups for more than that.

The thing the Cavs need at point is a greater and a guy that can distribute the ball, then be able to shoot a little...If the Cavs could get the Suns pick and pick Sessions I think he would fill that role...

Trust me he is going to be the steal of the draft late in round 1...

There is no way Dumars is letting Billups walk. I understand that is part of the reason they let Ben Wallace leave last year, was so they could make sure to re-sign Chauncey.

While Windhort's article is nice, his Blog that compliments the above article is even better.

Cavaliers Blog

Here is the interesting tidbit in that blog that really stands out to me.

UPDATE: I've gotten some e-mails because some people aren't understanding this (which is why you should read the story). The Cavs can and will kick in as much as $3 million in any deal. Wesley, Jones and Newble combined cap numbers are about about $9.4 million next season (add the 20 percent rule in trade and you get a little over $11 million in return value potential). Reduce the Wesley buyout plus the payment and hard cash due to cover the Cavs players is close to $4.6-$4.8 million depending on some things. Now, here's where I should point out that the Phoenix Suns love Drew Gooden, they spent all last summer trying to get him. Plus they really want to kill payroll and have been floating Shawn Marion's name. That's not a rumor, OK, that's just me thinking out loud. By the way, new Suns GM Steve Kerr and Danny Ferry are tight.
