2007 Big Ten Football Discussion

MJ

More Big Ten, less criticism
Jason Lloyd, Morning Journal Writer
10/30/2007

THIS is why Ohio State will continue to get blasted, even with a victory over the 24th best team in the country on Saturday:

Of the nine opponents the Buckeyes have defeated this year, all of them lost over the weekend except one, Purdue, which had to win because it played Northwestern, another piece of road kill on the side of the Buckeye Expressway.

Let's be clear: Beating the No. 24 team in the country on Saturday doesn't give critics reason to stop bashing Ohio State based on its soft schedule. Even though, ahem, some of us picked Penn State to win Saturday night, the truth is Ohio State SHOULD have won that game.

So should it win each of the remaining three, particularly if Wisconsin's P.J. Hill is still limping this weekend and if Michigan can't get Chad Henne and Mike Hart fully healthy.

...

This statement is a complete contradiction of his rationale for picking PSU to win the game. He did a guest spot on 1460thefan where he gave chapter and verse on how Penn State's 2007 is better than their 2005 defense (patently and obviously false to a person with brain) and how 2007 OSU is clearly inferior to 2005 OSU (clearly inferior from what perspective???). NOW he says they SHOULD have won? His statements on the radio (internet streaming for me) prevent him from saying this with credibility.

FWIW: Don't get me wrong. It literally made me crack a smile when he announced that he was picking Penn State to win the game. Bring it on, I say. Doubt the Buckeyes. But don't think I'm going to refrain from laughing at your lamer than lame excuses.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Coaches defend Buckeyes, conference

October 31, 2007

By Brian Hedger Post-Tribune staff writer
There are plenty who scoff at Ohio State's position atop the BCS rankings, but at least one group of coaches are Buckeyes believers -- Big Ten coaches.
During Tuesday's weekly teleconference, Big Ten coaches talked up Ohio State and did some scoffing of their own -- at those who say the Big Ten is a weak conference. Illinois' Ron Zook, who coached Florida in the SEC before coming to Champaign, is especially tired of hearing the rhetoric.
"Yeah, it does," he said, when asked if the Big Ten slams bother him. "I can speak as a coach who's been in the Southeastern Conference and now the Big Ten Conference, and this is a very, very competitive conference. You'd better have it strapped up every week, because there are a few teams in this conference who can play with any team in the country."
Much of the Buckeye bashing, Zook said, stems from last year's BCS National Championship game -- in which Ohio State was routed by Florida. Many point to that game and say the Buckeyes were outclassed in speed. Zook disagrees.

B10 vs other Conferences

With all the recent chatter from the "talking heads" on TV (and from the print media) about the relative strength of college football conferences, I thought I would take an objective look at the subject. Rather than allow my personal opinion to influence the results (like most of the "talking heads" do), I chose to look at facts (game results) and use a computer-based ranking program to evaluate the six BCS conferences.

I just concluded a rather thorough analysis of the six BCS conferences. I don?t think conferences chould be judged on just one year so I looked at all Div-1A vs Div-1A games (2732 games) from 2003 through 2006, a rather large sample of games. (I wish I could have included 2002 and 2007, for obvious reasons) After evaluating all the games played, I counted how many teams from each conference were in the top 30, using their CURRENT conference. Below is what I found:

TOP 30 TEAMS (Top 25%)
---------------------
Big 10 ? 7 teams
SEC ? 6 teams
ACC ? 6 teams
PAC 10 ? 5 teams
Big East ? 2 teams
Big 12 ? 2 teams
Other leagues/independents ? 2 teams

NEXT 30 TEAMS (Second 25%)
-----------------------
Big 10 ? 2 teams
SEC ? 2 teams
ACC ? 4 teams
PAC 10 ? 5 teams
Big East ? 3 teams
Big 12 ? 9 teams
Other leagues/independents ? 5 teams

Here are the top 30 teams:

30 PURDUE II 9.3 22.4 14.8 49 28 21 B10
* Class denotes in which quartile the team finished 2006

The conclusion I drew was that there was NO dominant conference during that 4-year period. Perhaps the Big 10, SEC, ACC, and PAC 10 were slightly ahead of the Big East and the Big 12.

If I had included both 2002 and 2007, I think Ohio State might have been #1 on the list since they have been 23-0 (so far) during those two years.

So Basically, only three teams in the Big Ten finished in your top quartile at the end of 2006? Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin?

Meanwhile 6 SEC teams finished 2006 in the top quartile.

I can see why you didn't post this in the More Ammo vs. SEC thread :)

Big Ten has alarming lack of championship results

If you grow up in Big Ten country, as a good portion of this nation has, you learn a few truths about the autumn pastime and its inevitable extension to New Year's Day.

Big Ten has alarming lack of championship results - USATODAY.com

Don't shoot the freaking messenger...

I won't shoot you, so I will attack her... She is a pissed off michigan fan only trying to piss off OSU fans.

I take it with a grain of salt.

So using the Media's SEC logic, since the Big 10 teams were knocking one another out of the NC picture for the last 40 years, that makes the Big 10 the strongest conference this universe has ever known.

After all, losing within the conference only makes the conference stronger as a whole.

:wink2:
