2007 Big Ten Football Discussion

Well tsun can't stop any team that lines up 3/4 wide and throws, Purdue pretty much always lines up 3/4 wide and throws. So the question is, can Purdue hold tsun under 35?

Depends on how they bounce back mentally from our game, but initially I'd say yes they can. Never forget the built in damper that is the tsun coaching staff and the field general that is Henne.

Tsuns offense isnt complex, its just takes a basic level of overall atheticisim to stop it. From what I saw, Purdue might have enough. 8-9 man fronts, key on the fullback and when in doubt guess they will run left. Backside guys keep your feet, maintain your gap responsibilities and know that the cutback is coming.

Purdue will have to cheat on defense to overcome tsuns talent edge and you can't always guess right, so they will give up some points/big plays BUT I think tsuns D is at a bigger disadvantage than Purdue's.

Also if Purdue is scoring at some point in the game Hart becomes less of a threat and it has to get turned over to Big Game Chad and the receivers.

All that said, if Purdue doesn't come out fired up and play the best they are capable of, tsun will win. A post-OSU hangover could doom them.

Yesterday was the last battle of unbeatens in the Big 10 this year.

In the unlikely event that the skunk weasles get past Purdue next week, they play Illinois the week after.

So in two weeks, we will be down to (at most) two teams in the Big 10 without a conference loss.

It is possible that OSU could wrap up the conference title at home against Illinois the week before heading to the Pig House.

I don't see Illinois losing to anyone else but us so technically it would mean we play tsun for the outright B10. If somehow we lost to tsun after beating Illinois we would still be the RB team because of the better OOC record.

All that said, the road to a 3rd straight B10 title is firmly in our grasp but Happey Valley looms.

After Ohio State, pickings are slim

Big Ten is really a Big One

After Ohio State, pickings are slim in conference

Columbus -- Name the second-best team in the Big Ten. Right now. Go.
Illinois, right? Maybe. Not Wisconsin, not after losing to the Illini. Michigan, with four straight wins after an 0-2 start? Not Penn State after two straight losses. Umm, 5-1 Indiana?
How about no one?

1. For those of you who felt ESPN was on a witch hunt in its pursuit of Jim Tressel and Ohio State a few years ago, Yahoo! is helping the NCAA close in on USC. Yahoo! reported this week that a sports marketer in Los Angeles will give the NCAA financial records indicating Reggie Bush and his family received about $280,000 in benefits while he was enrolled at USC.

2. If it's proven Bush received improper benefits, USC could be forced to forfeit games. How that affects its 2004 national championship remains to be seen. The school could face more sanctions if it's proven that the coaches knew or should have known about the benefits.

Big 10 Midseason report on CFN

Ten best Big Ten players in the first half of the season
1. Mike Hart, RB Michigan
2. Jonal Saint-Dic, DE Michigan State
3. Rashard Mendenhall, RB Illinois
4. Sean Lee, LB Penn State
5. Javon Ringer, RB Michigan State
6. Dan Connor, LB Penn State
7.
P.J. Hill, RB Wisconsin
8. Kellen Lewis, QB Indiana
9.
Shawn Crable, LB Michigan
10. J Leman, LB Illinois

Two Spartans in the top 5

Two scUM, two Nitts , two Illini in top ten

Four of the top 10 players are linebackers, including both Nitts

No Buckeyes

Whatever...

They predict we'll be the champion without a single one of the ten best players. That's fine.

The odd thing is that just a day earlier 2 of their 5 writers chose Laurinaitis as the best defensive player in the country so far this season. The others went for Dorsey and Selvie (all 3 are good choices).

But this stuff deosn't mean much - just keep winning. :osu:

Someone sure thinks PSU has a lock on the linebacker position. Where the hell does all that love come from? I know I've got Scarlet and Gray lenses, but pick a year since Gradishar when we haven't had LBs as good or better than the Knits.

Surely, that list was mis-titled and should've been: Top Ten Big Ten Players Who Aren't Buckeyes.

Laurinitis
Robiskie
Boeckman
Jenkins
Russell
Gohlston
Wells
Freeman

That's eight without a stretch. What is CFN smoking?

Maybe they are considering :osu: as a separate entity from the Big11 as :osu: doesn't suck ass???

That is stupid... WR's Robiskie from OSU and Thomas from MSU, along with Lauranitis and Freeman at the very least need to be on that list.

They probably should have done a top 10 D and top 10 O list.

I hope Hart ruptures his hymen this week vs ILL.

I would have no problem at all with removing all the LB's from the original list and adding the 4 players you mentioned. Devin Thomas is leading the conference in all-purpose-yardage by a big margin. Production has to count for something.

most of those are a stretch actually.

lil animal - yeah, he belongs
robo - he's a great player but hasn't done much outside of the long ball. of which he's lost a disturbing number of as well. there are a lot of players with more highlight reel footage. to a national audience, he has the measurables but not the resume.
boeckman - no, not even a little bit.
jenkins - yep, by a lot.
russell - nope, i like him a lot to be honest. but he's still young yet and has a lot of getting better to do.
gohlston - disruptive, yes. dominant, no. by the end of the year maybe, but not right now. this is another one who has the measure ables but not the resume.
wells - again no. has all the tools, but because of injuries and his slow start he really hasn't played a full game yet. difficult to put him above some of the other really good players at this point.
freeman - the light really came on about 2 weeks ago. "right now" he might be one of the top 3 lb's in the conference. but i can't give the spot to someone who has only had 3 good games.

im surprised washington wasn't on your list. personally, i think he has had a better season than all but 2 of the guys on your list. though i do agree with you about there being no bucks on the top 10 list. such a statement is almost so absurd it isn't worth a response.

And even more than sheer statistics, all 4 of those guys are eye popping highlight film players with the stats to back up the sizzle.

Big Ten coaches favor bye week

Thursday, October 25, 2007 3:49 AM
By Bob Baptist

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The injury bug creeping through Big Ten football teams as the season enters its defining stretch have some coaches pining for a week off. The week they used to have off.
"There is not a coach in the conference who does not think it is extremely important that we find a way to have a bye week. Hopefully, we can do that," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said this week when the subject was broached during the Big Ten coaches' weekly teleconference.
The bye week for Big Ten teams evaporated last season, when the NCAA allowed teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A, to play 12 regular-season games for added revenue.

A little late to this.... But, I agree on Washington. The guy does nothing but take away the half of the field Jenkins isn't on. His game against Purdue, in particular, was outstanding.
