Joe Johnson To Replace Kidd On All-Star Team
14th February, 2007 - 2:29 pm
Press Release -
The NBA announced today that Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson will represent the Eastern Conference at the 2007 NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas on Sunday, February 18. Johnson is Atlanta?s first All-Star since Shareef Abdur-Rahim was named to the midseason classic in 2002.

?I?m happy and excited to be named to the Eastern Conference team,? Johnson said. ?Obviously, I?m looking forward to my first All-Star experience. It?s a tremendous honor and accomplishment for me, my coaches, teammates and the organization.?

?This is great news for Joe and our organization,? Hawks head coach Mike Woodson said. ?He?s put himself in this position by playing like an All-Star all season long. We feel he?s one of the top players in the league,

and this selection validates it. He?s my first All-Star player as a coach and I hope he has a great time, and takes home wonderful memories.?

Dunk contest won't raise rim

LAS VEGAS -- That didn't take long, did it?

Thursday night in Vegas and I'm about to do what I do best -- head out to dine finely -- when my phone rings with word that we have our first dunk-contest flap of 2007.

Two nights before the actual contest -- and assuming you can still have an actual controversy in what sadly ranks as the faded jewel of All-Star Weekend -- I'm told that Dwight Howard is rather steamed.

Reason being: Howard's request to have the basket raised on a couple dunks he had planned for Saturday evening has been denied by the league.

Orlando sources report that Howard has been practicing a couple wicked maneuvers that might inject this dying competition with the ingenuity/originality it desperately needs. One is a 360 throwdown with the rim hiked to 12 feet, two feet higher than regulation. The other sets the rim at 11 1/2 feet and has Howard purportedly going between his legs with the ball in mid-air before flushing.

Overall it was a great weekend...

First off Vegas was a great host city and wouldnt be the least bit suprised to see them get a team within about 4 or 5 years, or maybe even have a franchise move there, like the Kings if they can't strike up a deal with the city of Sac town.

The Dunk contest was pretty good, but the thing is most of the dunks had already been done in one form or another, besides the best dunk of the night by Howard where he put that sticker at 12' 6''. :yow1:

The rookie game and the all-star game were blowouts, but were still fun to watch b/c you could tell the guys were out there having fun.

Either way I think that this was a great showing for the NBA and for anyone to say the NBA is full of gangsters and thugs if they honestly watched this all weekend, would be gladly mistaken IMO.

Overall I give the Weekend and A+...

Vegas this weekend...

if you really enjoy the MTV, hip hop, gang, bad MF, bling, big rims etc...culture then Vegas this weekend was for you. I've been here all weekend and the NBA fandom was here in full force. 8 shootings, multiple gang related incidents, restaurants closing because of people running out and not paying, stiffing cabbies...and the list goes on.

I plan to make it a point to never again be in the same city at the same time as an NBA All Star game.

That game is a joke.

Why not have the players wear clown uniforms and play HORSE?

I still think the NBA is the best All-Star game there is. It's the only sport where the players can go about 60-70% (to avoid injury, etc.) and still make the game entertaining. The NFL should get rid of the Pro Bowl (Ask Drew Brees) and baseball is not very exciting.

The NHL would have a pretty cool all-star game (for the same reasons as basketball) if there was still a NHL.

I know it's an all-star game but the lack of defense is disgusting.

Makes the regular season look like college ball in regards to the defense.

No wonder kids don't like to play defense these days.

Vegas, baby. It has to be hard to play good defense on the world's best basketball players with a crippling hangover.

So what's the excuse all of the previous years when it wasn't in Vegas?

Actually, I have no comeback for that. To me, because it's an all-star game, the lack of defense makes it fun. I like seeing Dwight Howard catch 'oops 2 feet above the rim and all those guys look like they're having fun playing my favorite game. For too much of the regular season, the game doesn't look like it's fun for them.

With that, of course, you're right, no defense in the all star game. I will say this, the defense is underrated in the regular season games. Those guys are damn good at basketball. If you've ever played pickup with an NBA guy, you know how much better. It's amazing. Take the best defensive college team in the nation and guys like Kobe, TMac, Dirk, Nash would destroy them. IMO, of course.

The All-Star game is all about the show, and just having fun and trying to bring some excitement for the crowd.

Trying to make it into a serious, competitive game isn't going to happen. Sure, the guys will want to win because of their competitive nature, but they aren't about to drain themselves during their break from the grind of the other 82 games where they have to play hard.
