Hey, BKchmoc, thanks for keeping this thread going. As a former track and CC coach I love to see the Buckeye distance program moving up and gathering kids like Jeff See. Too many good CC programs in the state to not have a better program at OSU.
My pleasure... as the resident track nut this is my form of post padding. :tongue2: I really appreciate how Gary is focusing on keeping Ohio talent in-state and doing a pretty good job of it if I may say so.

From staff reports
All-American runner Jared Hall of Cleveland Heights has orally committed to Ohio State's track team.
"It was a tough decision, but I wanted to become a Buckeye," said Hall, who praised Tigers coach Claude Holland. "Coach Holland has been like a second father to me and my teammates. I'm looking forward to becoming a leader and bringing OSU to the top."

Are these all committed athletes? I'm glad to see Gary attempting to bring Ohio talent together... pulling a Tressel for track!

Gary gave a speech at a luncheon and commented on the strengths of the football program and what/how track can copy from them. He may be young, but he is committed, passionaite, and I am guessing he has more energy than any other conference coach. Hearing a lot of great things from alumni for the 1st time in a long time.

I am still a bit concerned about recruiting almost exclusively from Ohio, but this program needs to start somewhere.

For my daughter's sake, I wish the women's program would follow suit for when she is a high school senior.

I know we lost the Dual but I heard it was an amazing meet. Did anyone manage to go?
I heard from some good friends that it was one of the most exciting track meets they'd ever seen. Every event was closely contested, and had a high level of enthusiasm from the athletes and audience.
Also, glad to know that See is doing what we all thought he could in highschool. I remember being so excited when he ran those times as a sophomore.

See had a very great year last year, but it went unnoticed due to redshirting outdoors after claiming the indoor big ten title and all-american honors. He ran 3:58 for a full mole and then ran 3:40 to qualify for the Olympic Trials this summer. After his 6th in cc at big tens this fall, I think he's going to have a great year.
Balyo 4:04 so.
Jake Edwards 4:07(hs) fr. (redshirting)
Rob Myers 3:53 mile (volunteer coach)
Brian Olinger 3:58 mile (coaching)
Dan Huling 3:57 (training there)
And adding Cory Leslie - watch out!

The meet was a lot closer than the score indicates. There were a few slips in events we were expected to win, which cost the team a big swing in points, but overall people performed well. I know a few people set pr's right out of the gate, which is a great sign.

As for the parallels between Gary and Tressel; they are pretty spot on. He sent a letter out to current and past Buckeyes saying a few things: he wants to get the Ohio kids and branch out from there, and he is also tapping the 'natural' rivalry with michigan by creating dual meets with them and making that a focus of the season. He is trying to use that to drum up alumni to come back and support the program, which I'm sure will create an even better team culture than he already has.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's track and field team fell to Michigan, 90-71, in a dual meet Saturday at Michigan's Indoor Track Building.

Lenny Jatsek led the Buckeyes as he hit a winning mark of 66 feet, and 7 3/4 inches in the weight throw. The toss is a NCAA provisional mark and the fifth-best in Ohio State history for the Walton Hills, Ohio, native. Also in the field, Kyle Burns took the pole vault with a leap of 16 feet 3/4 inches. Patrick Whalen dominated in the shot put with a toss of 57-6 1/2, topping the field by more than eight feet.

"Overall, it was a great event for our sport," Robert Gary, Ohio State head coach, said. "They (Michigan) did a great job hosting and I am looking forward to having them come to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium for our outdoor meet April 5. Aside from the score, it was a short, terribly exciting competition that did great honor to the greatest rivalry in all of sports."
