ORD_Buckeye

Wrong glass, Sir.
Ohio State looks poised to make a strong run for its second national championship in three years.

2007-08 Fencing Outlook

Now in his ninth season as the head coach of the Ohio State fencing team, Vladimir Nazlymov once again has the Buckeyes primed for a run at a national championship. The Buckeyes lost only two letterwinners from a season ago, when they secured a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championships and won a fifth consecutive Midwest Conference championship.

Ohio State Excels At Garret Open

The Ohio State fencing team finished competition at the Garret Open this past Saturday and Sunday with an impressive performance against many of the nation?s elite programs. Hosted by Penn State, the Garret Open is an individual tournament rather than a dual meet and featured 10 of the Top 15 schools from the 2006-07 NCAA Championships.

Out of six events, the Buckeyes won four, including men?s foil, men?s sabre, women?s sabre and women?s foil.

The Lady Buckeyes fencing team goes to Richmond, Va., for North American Cup competition this weekend, Dec. 7-9

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The Ohio State fencing team will travel to Richmond, Va., for North American Cup competition this weekend, Dec. 7-9, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.
The North American Cup (NAC) is the title of a series of national tournaments held throughout the country each year and serves as the point system used for determining spots on U.S. National teams. The next NAC competition will be held Jan. 18-20 in Atlanta, Ga., and will mark Ohio State?s final competition before the collegiate regular season begins Jan. 26 at the New York University Duals.
A LOOK BACK
Last season, Andras Horanyi won men?s foil at the NAC in Richmond, using the event as a springboard towards his national title run in 2007.
Among current Buckeyes who competed at the NAC last year, senior Siobhan Byrne took 11th in sabre, junior Eileen Grench placed 12th in sabre, junior Mikhail Momtselidze took 16th in sabre, sophomore Julia Tikhonova finished 20th in foil and sophomore Sean Harder placed 27th in epee to round out Ohio State?s top performers.

Coach Vladimir Nazlymov, center, qualified a maximum 12 fencers to the NCAA.

Fencer Mikhail Momtselidze, left, says Ohio State is lucky to have Vladimir Nazlymov as coach.

Seven little words, spoken in broken English and uttered in front of a two-time Heisman Trophy winner, helped alter the course of Ohio State fencing nine years ago. Asked by then-OSU assistant athletic director Archie Griffin for his philosophy on recruiting, Vladimir Nazlymov showed he didn't need a sword to cut to the chase.
"I tell him, 'If I am here, they will come,' " Nazlymov said. "Archie look at me a little strange when I say this."

We picked up another point on the domers today to finish the women's competition 101-98. with Columbia a distant third at 82. Not sure if that means we won a women's national championship or not.

Unfortunately, both women fencers in their respective individual championships lost, taking home silver.

Men are on Saturday and Sunday. Barring a remarkably strong run by Columbia (or a huge collapse by Ohio State and the domers) the NC should come down to Ohio State and Notre Dame.

I've read before that the NCAA only awards one combined NC in fencing.

The tOSU men defeated the ND men head-to-head all three times they met this season, so tOSU has to be the favorite at this point. Penn State had the only higher rated men's squad, but they've only got 68 points after the women's competition. All three of those teams have 2 men in each of the 3 events: foil, sabre, and epee.

From an earlier article about the event:

official.site

ABOUT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Both the women, who will fence Thursday and Friday, and the men, who will fence Saturday and Sunday, will fence with three weapons – the sabre, foil and epee. A total of 24 fencers in each weapon have qualified for the championships and will fence against the other 23 competitors in their discipline. After those 23 bouts, the best four records will advance to the medal round. Those four top fencers will be seeded and placed into a four-team bracket, with the winners of the two semifinal bouts advancing to the gold medal round, and the two losers meeting for the bronze medal.
A total of six individual national champions will be crowned. All wins secured by an individual will go to its team total. The team with the most points following the men’s gold medal matches on Sunday will be crowned team national champion.
