College basketball roundup: Lavender's 33 minutes, late foul shots boost Xavier

Monday, February 25, 2008 2:52 AM

Associated Press

Brookhaven graduate Drew Lavender was back to working full time yesterday, and No. 10 Xavier needed every minute he could muster.

Lavender made four free throws in the final 35 seconds and Xavier beat host Dayton 57-51 in an Atlantic 10 game.
After being limited to 14 minutes Thursday in a win over Duquesne because of a sprained left ankle, Lavender returned at point guard and played 33 minutes.

New NCAA bracket projection

I?ve updated our bracket projection based on this weekend?s games. As I wrote in Saturday?s papers, it seems that more teams are trying to play their way out of the field than into it.
That?s why, for example, Ohio State remains a bubble team instead of dropping into the ?still a chance? category, where the Buckeyes deserved to have dropped. They?re lucky they still have Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State on the schedule. If they had only the Big Ten mediocrities to play, they?d have no chance to get the marquee win they desperately need. They have to beat at least one ? and maybe two -- of those teams to stay on the right side of the bubble.
Of the other Ohio teams, Kent State helped itself with a victory at St. Mary?s, while Wright State and Dayton took a hit with losses. Wright State?s loss to Illinois State probably dooms any chance of an at-large bid.

Great game between Vandy and Tennessee. Foster and Lofton are dueling each other, Lofton with 24 pts and 6 threes, Foster has 20 and (I think) 4 threes.

53-49 Vandy. They look good, even with AJ Ogilvy in foul trouble.

on e!spn.

down goes Tennessee, less than 30 hours after being named #1.

72-69, Foster with 32 points.

Commodores have beat the last four #1 teams they have faced at home, nice streak, has to be some sort of record.

Must be the benches.

Tennessee looked tired tonight. I can only imagine after that game vs Memphis they were pretty drained for tonights game. I watched them totally dismantle Vandy in person earlier this year. Vandy is tough at home and Foster is damn good but it really looked to me like Tennessee was spent from that game the other night. Just my observation.

Does anyone else have a problem with Drake being ranked in the Top 25? I understand that they're 23-3, but who have they beat? lol

I guess we'll find out what they're all about tonight when they play Butler

I think they lost last week to someone and they certainly should get handled by Butler. I do not think they will be in the Top 25 next week. If they our, they will be very very lucky.

LOL proved us both wrong. They just upset Butler 71-64

well, 3 days and 1 team later and Drake perhaps gets exposed, or at least experiences a letdown. Lost at Missouri St, ouch.

College basketball roundup: Vandy upends No. 1 Tennessee

Wednesday, February 27, 2008 3:05 AM

Tennessee found out that being No. 1 can be tougher than beating No. 1.

Shan Foster scored 32 points and No. 18 Vanderbilt knocked off top-ranked Tennessee 72-69 last night -- a day after the Volunteers moved into the top spot in the rankings for the first time in school history.
The Vols (25-3, 11-2 Southeastern Conference) beat then-No. 1 Memphis on Saturday night 66-62 on the western edge of Tennessee for their ninth straight victory to earn that spot themselves, then had to travel back to Nashville to defend their top ranking for the first time.
