2006 Tour de France - Floyd Landis

I haven't had a chance to see the race yet, but I will catch the OLN replay tonight. Anyone who has seen it what looked to be the cause of Landis's demise. I was reading the ESPN live tour tracker and they made it sound like Landis was primed for a hard run up to the end.

It's not quite over for Landis. He broke out from the main pack, and caught up to a breakaway. Right now he's made up over 6 minutes on the yellow jersey. There are only 2 riders with him now, but one is from T-Mobile, who will be trying to dog the pace on Kloden's behalf.

If he holds this margin, he'll be within striking distance for Saturday's time trial.

Holy shit!

Landis, who was bonked yesterday, won the stage by over 5 minutes. He'll probably be within 10 or 20 seconds of Sastre, who might barely take the yellow jersey from Pereiro.

All three guys will likely be within 30 seconds of each other going into the TT.

edit: the others have now finished. Pereiro still leads Sastre by 12 seconds, and leads Landis by 30 seconds.

Saturday should be the most meaningful TT since 1989, when Lemond overtook Fignon to win by 8 seconds on a short final stage.

What a gutsy performance by Landis. Everybody in the media wrote him off after yesterday's ride. Now he bounces back and makes up almost all of the 8 mins back. Does anybody know how good of a time trial rider landis is?

He's the best of the three. He finished second in the TT earlier in this year's race. He was 1:10 faster than Sastre and 1:40 better than Pereiro. That stage was 52 kilometers; Saturday's will be 57 km.

Wow, what a surprise from Landis!! This should set up a very interesting last few stages. Finally once where the mountains don't decide the winner. They will have played a big part in defining the contenders, but the flat lands and speed will reign supreme this year. You have like Landis's chances from here on out.

As long as landis can recover by Saturday he should be in good shape, but if I remember correctly, Periero is a better time trialist than she showed in the first TT. I think he just rode himself into shape after that stage. And, he has the benefit of the yellow, which gives you at least 30 seconds usually.

Such disappointment out of all the other Americans this year, although Vandevelde has done a great job in support of Sastre. Not sure if the Hincapie experiment will be longer than on year, and I would assume next year will be the debut of Danielson at the Tour for Discovery.

Surprising, betting sites now have Landis as the overwhelming favorite to win the tour:

Stage 19 (for those that plan on watching it): Floyd Landis (USA-PHO) is set to start at 10:09 a.m. ET, 3 minutes before Carlos Sastre (ESP-CSC) and 6 minutes before yellow jersey holder Oscar Pereiro (ESP-CEI).

Landis just posted the fastest time of the day at the first check. Barring disaster, he should be in yellow in about an hour. It's on OLN.

edit - Pereiro was 10 seconds slower at the check. Landis still needs to gain 20 more seconds. Sastre seems to be out of it.

Landis has got 10K left. It looks like he'll have about a minute lead for the yellow jersey over Pereiro. Sastre may lose 3rd place to Kloden.

edit - Landis is now in yellow, and tomorrow should just be mostly a ceremonial ride, so he'll become the 3rd American to win the Tour.

He's scheduled to ride in the Tour of Elk Grove (Illinois) on August 12/13th. That's about 5 miles from where I live, so if he still rides I think I'll watch part of that race. Hopefully he'll take part in that race before he has the hip replacement.

Overall standings:

Landis
Pereiro (59 seconds behind)
Kloden (1:29 behind)
Sastre (3:13 behind)

Hey, just back from Lake Placid. What a great race the TDF was.

Side note, Levi Leipheimer just signed with Discovery. Rumors abound that Disco is trying to get Basso and Ulrich over also.

My big dissapointment was with Disco, they flat blew. Guess Johan Bruneel isn't perfect without Lance ay?

Also, the evening coverage sucked. Bob Roll probably is a great guy (and a dead head) but as a broadcaster he is a fucking clown.
