2006 Notes (and Babb's comparison to 2002 defense) merged

I don't mean for this to sound negative, but I've heard "the offense should be vastly improved" line before going into a Buckeye season. For whatever reason, Tressel teams seem to start slow offensively. Sure, the TS suspension hurt this year, but 2003 was supposed to be an offensive explosion with everyone coming back.

With that being said, I think the offense will be strong. I just hope they come out of the gate strong offensively. Texas will be VERY tough in Austin, especially if VY stays. With our defense probably struggling early in the year, the Bucks will have to out-score Texas, and history suggests that could be a problem with an early-season game.

You have got to remember that even if Tress does get somewhay conservative we are going to have dominating backs that can get a first down on 3rd and 5 and a QB that can escape the rush and pick up a first down. Remember everyoen thought that 03' was going to be a breakout year, but it wasnt b/c we had absolutely no running game with Ross and it is hard to sustain drives without a running game. Next year we will have 3 guys that can tote the rock.

Any Longhorns out there tell us what Texas has coming back? Assume Young stays. Premature perhaps, but I think Texas is what decides whether Bucks can go undefeated in '06. I think our D stays in top 10 and our O is even more robust...maybe averaging 40 to 45 pts/gm in '06.

Their O-line has 2 senior and 3 Juniors. But at least 2 of those Juniors are good enough to leave early, I obviously dont know anything about their plans but it is possible they could really be hurting, or they could still be quite strong.. its pretty up in the air right now, although Mack does seem to be pretty good at getting kids to stick around for all 4.

QUICK ANALYSIS

</TD></TR><TR><TD vAlign=top bgColor=#ffffff>Two sides of the ball will each tell a different story, namely due to the extent of losses on defense and the major returns on O. We rated Ohio State’s 2005 LBs as second in the nation, but with all starters leaving, those tapped as successors needed to see more reps. Mike D’Andrea (shoulder) and Marcus Freeman (knee), along with A.J. Hawk backup Curtis Terry, are all super quick, talented guys who saw action way too limited for us to think that transitions here will be seamless. They won’t be, and Tressel will miss his defensive glue once he sees his run stopping unsynchronized with the passing D. The DLmen and DBs appear less susceptible to dropoff, but the overall defensive product coming out of Columbus won’t be nearly what it has been since his LB-trio arrived in 2002. Folks along the 670 might not recognize their high-flying Buckeyes if the offense has to continually rescue the D via shootouts, yet this is a realistic scenario that those eleven will handle well. Ginn and (hopefully) Holmes both return to their multiple roles, and, along with Troy Smith’s dual-threat, opposing defenders will again be flatfooted as the Buckeyes develop their “semi-spread option” scheme. The emergence of Antonio Pittman gives fans the promise of ground yards not seen from a RB since those ominous Clarett days. Most-felt will be Mangold’s departure in the middle, though Tressel has recruited speed up front so replacement(s) on the inside (at LG too) are least-of-all athletic, moreover promising. Also notable is PK John Huston leaving. Ginn and Homes again as a kick/punt return tandem will keep OSU from losing most field position battles. Going into Austin early could again derail any title talk in the capital. Penn State and Iowa within September mean the new LBs have their work cut out. Lots more nail-biters galore, so these Buckeyes could either surprise or struggle.

Im fine with Young staying, as long as he plays against us like he did against A & M last friday...

I'm fine with that as well.

Also, I would be quite content if he played as well against us in '06 as he did in '05. Winning the next one down in Austin will be critically dependent on our offense doing better than in the '05 contest. Bottom line, I want our Buckeyes to beat them on the road with their "A" game - and with Troy at the controls and a further improved running game that is a real possibility.

I'm not a 'Horn but, they have a pretty decent run down on who the seniors are that will leave the program.

Given the tendency for Texas players to complete their eligibility, academic, or athletic, this linked article is likely as good an indicator as any.

Some names listed ...

The entering scholarship freshmen who were there that night, and are here today, have carved an extensive personal and team legacy. Offensively, the five-year players include receiver Brian Carter, tackle Will Allen, guard Mike Garcia, tackle Jonathan Scott, tackle Will Winston, and quarterback Matt Nordgren. Defensively, the list includes cornerback Cedric Griffin, safety Michael Huff, linebacker Eric Hall, linebacker Braden Johnson, and end Kaelen Jakes.
Joining the redshirt senior group are fullback Ahmard Hall, punter Richmond McGee, kicker David Pino, holder Nick Schroeder and special teams head hunter Karim Meijer.
Tight end David Thomas, linebacker Aaron Harris and defensive tackles Rodrique Wright and Larry Dibbles are the four-year seniors.

It seems to me that the Bucks really only need to worry about four games next year:

1. At UT, obviously.

2. At Iowa, where the Hawkeyes will be out for revenge and considerably stronger on the DL than they were when we got them this year.

3. UM, just because they're UM and I'll always worry about them even though JT should continue to garage his shiny maize and blue Carr at the Shoe.

4. At MSU, which I think is being overlooked as a possible speed bump. You never know what you'll get with Sparty even though the Bucks SHOULD roll 'em.

PSU loses a lot, especially on D, and I don't see them winning in Columbus, especially considering that Troy will have some things to prove to the Nittany Kitties.

If the Bucks get through 1 and 2 above unscathed, though, paint the endzones and bust out the Tostitos as JT starts putting rings on his off hand.

As for player replacement issues, my biggest concern is center. I know we'll have a good player there, but will he make the right calls, LEAD the line, and have everyone in sync? If so, the line will be very solid at worst and dominating at best. Holmes will be missed, but TGII, Gonzo, Frost/Nicol and someone else (Dukes?) will step up and we won't miss much. I'm also assuming that we'll have far fewer fumbles because this year's fumbling HAS to be an aberration. I'm not sweating the kicker position because when it comes to that "In JT I trust."

Defensively, the run D has to take a step back with the loss of Hawk, Carp, and Schlegel, but I think the pass D could improve with a little more upfield push from a more pass-rush oriented front four and some bolder DB play. As good as this year's D was, it didn't force many turnovers, and I'm cautiously optimistic that an off season with the whole defensive staff intact and a little more ball hawking from a more-experienced Jenkins et al might compensate for a little less dominance in run stuffing. As Phil Steele says: Turnovers = turnaround.
