2006 Notes (and Babb's comparison to 2002 defense) merged

The 2005 season isn't over and here we are with a thread taking off about next year. Don't you folks ever wonder if maybe we are a bit over the top on our interest in the Buckeyes?
it's either this or discuss the suckitude of notre dame, oregon, and, of course, all things scUM for the next 6 weeks.

edit: well, i'm pretty sure that we can do both.

Another perspective from NationalChamps.net:

Whereas Ohio State brings back eight on offense (all major talent positions are secure), it is the D that look to be gutted with the loss of the entire LB corps. Sure, Tressel and his posse have the talent in their recruiting coffers to bounce back, but how long will it take for the three new guys to even get close to where Hawk, Schlegel, and Carpenter are now? This unit will be the Buckeye’s measuring stick for 2006 – as far as the corps rises, the team rises, too. The secondary will boast three returning starters to give the D (and foes) some grounding. This could signal a new dawn in Columbus, a time when OSU outscores foes instead of stopping them cold. A little defense will go a long way with Smith, Ginn, Holmes, Pittman and friends hitting on all cylinders.

I really expect the offense to come out as strong as it has ended this year. The line, Smith, and Pittman should all be improved. Losing Santonio (which I'm assuming) will hurt. He's great. However, I'm confident we have people to step in. I think Dukes will be the next great one.

The defense is going to hurt. I think the d-line will be just as strong by the end of the year, especially with the studs we have coming up at DE. The secondary will also be strong. Salley will be missed, but kind of like the receivers, we have young stars at safety.

Obviously, that leaves LB and Kicker. LB's are going to be tough to replace. Freeman and D'Andrea are going to do fine. Also Lauranitis played very well in the Michigan game, but we're talking about replacing the greatest LB corp that OSU has ever seen. It will hurt. And then the Kicker is a wild card.

It all comes down to schedule. Away games at Texas, Iowa, and Michigan State? Those could all be tough. Bottom line, we shouldn't have a bad year by any means, but I wouldn't buy my plane tickets for Tempe yet.

It will hurt.
yes, it will hurt. like you said, we're losing our best linebacking crew our school has ever seen. those three linebackers as a group would be ranked among the best college football has ever seen. obviously, we'll see a setback. however, the defense will still be very good. the defensive secondary will still be solid, and our defensive line will be, too. we just need a group of linebackers that will hold their own. i suspect that we'll have linebackers that do more than that. i have this nagging suspicion that kerr will shine next year. when you throw in a d'andrea who was supposed to start this year, there is little worrying going on in my head. i know laurinaitis did a good job against scUM, but unfortunately i didn't see anything exemplary. he has plenty of time to progess. he did his job against scUM. as others have mentioned, freeman would be starting at nearly any other school. there's not too much more to ask for. whatever deficiencies the defense will have next year will be offset by our potent offense.

i question that author's perspective, considering that he included holmes in the offense's arsenal for next year. though holmes may stay, we all know that the chips are stacked against that possibility.

I question it too... particularly because it's the first indication the media may not take us as serious as they should without Hawk, Carpenter and Schlegel. Yes, this was a great defense, but as I said before you don't have to lead every defensive category to be a winner. I think USC is 43rd in total defense. Jim Tressel will always have a good defense on the field... last year's group was special.

Er - this year's group. :wink2: Keep in mind this isn't the Cooper era where you need world-beater talent and terrific luck just to beat meatchicken. I think you'll all be pleasantly surprised by what JT can do in an offseason.

Losing excellent players and replacing them with unknowns is part of CFB. Every team has to go through it every year.

In Tress We Trust.

These are great points. The best part about next year is we will be plugging guys in that have been here and have played in games.

Just like this year we all thought one of our weak spots would be the corner spot opposite Youbouty, well Everett did one helluva a job, and he had been playing meaningful snaps while not starting for 3 years b4 this year. Samething with Will Allen in 03'.

D'Andrea has played meaningful snaps in 2 seasons and he was the starter in his junior year for 3 games ahead of Schlegal. He also has been there and seen things, so that will help him.

Then we have Kerr, who was usually first off the bench for the middle in late game blowouts, and he got his time on ST this year. Also keep in mind he was a leading tackler for a big ten team his freshmen year.

Then we have some young guys that while havent had the experience were hard to keep off the field this year. It took an injury to keep Freeman off the field and 3 NFL lber's to keep the others off the field.

If we can beat Texas and Iowa in their places, I think we have a good shot at getting to the title game. I think our defense will be a bit down for a while next year, but our offense will be excellent. By midseason that team will be dominant all around I think.

I don't mean for this to sound negative, but I've heard "the offense should be vastly improved" line before going into a Buckeye season. For whatever reason, Tressel teams seem to start slow offensively. Sure, the TS suspension hurt this year, but 2003 was supposed to be an offensive explosion with everyone coming back.

With that being said, I think the offense will be strong. I just hope they come out of the gate strong offensively. Texas will be VERY tough in Austin, especially if VY stays. With our defense probably struggling early in the year, the Bucks will have to out-score Texas, and history suggests that could be a problem with an early-season game.

My 2 cents:

QB- With a full year of off-season practice and no QB controversy, TS will be downright scary next year. TS made play after play down the stretch as he settled in and got comfortable. He has the nastiest spin move this side of Barry Sanders. Possible Heisman candidate.

RB- Stacked. Returning a 1200-1300 yd rusher. If he has the type of off season this year as he did last year (Most Improved player on O in my opinion), the sky is the limit. Great change of pace backs w/ both Wells' and Haw. Only problem might be spreading all the carries around. Nice problem to have, though.

OL- My only area of concern, albeit slight. Tons of talent and depth, it's all about how well the unit gels together/ stays healthy. This years unit really played cohesively down the stretch.

WR- Could be a wild card position. How much will TG develop into a traditional receiver, rather than just a deep threat/ screen receiver. If he hones his route running skills, look out. Who will step up in place of Santonio? AG really showed me a lot in the possession/ gamebreaker combo, but can he pick up his game now that he won't be able to sneak up on defenses as a 3rd receiver? And who steps into his former role as the sneaky 3rd WR? Again, tons of talent here, it's just a matter of someone stepping up.

DL- Kudla is a big loss, but again, tons of depth, and experience here. This will be huge, because a disruptive DL will help ease the sting of breaking in 3 new starting LBs. In my opinion, as goes the DL, so will go our D next year.

LB- Obvously the big question mark. But my perspective is this: We had 3 great SR LBs who were LEADERS. Who paid the most attention to the example these guys set at practice and off the field? I really think there's going to be some "hidden impact" from this group simply because they got to see this years crew play the last couple of years. True buckeyes that played the postion the way a buckeye should. Obviously, you don't just replace those 3 w/ no drop off, but...

DB- Definite area of strength. Like I said, as the DL goes, so goes the D, because we are going to be smothering people in the secondary. A good push from the DL, tough coverage by the DBs, and people will be talking about easily tOSU cranks out LBs to fill the shoes left by AS, Hawk and Carp.

ST- JT speciality. We still have Ginn, and he's lethal. I think he's going to learn that every play doesn't need to be a homerun, and that will help his concentration on dropped punts. Trapasso is going to be good. We can't replace Holmes explosiveness, but AG is still a solid speed demon option. I just have a gut that our kicking game will be fine. Call it the JT difference.

I see 11-2, or 12-1.

Read Dodd's comments today about Troy Smith...(i.e., 2006 Heisman candidate). Those last two drives defined this guy, and while I know he has been inconsistent this year, if he can put that together next year, we're gonna be able to cover up a few sins on defense.

Exactly what I'm thinking. A powerful running game, a full off season of work, and no looming QB controversy is going to make Troy lethal. Our offense has the capability of being mighty scary.

Will everyone be happy with a 10-2 year? That's what next year looks like.
With our tough out of conference schedules in coming years, we are probably looking at a 50-50 shot of 1 loss even before the Big Ten starts!
But, as they say," lose early, not late. "
