School: Ohio State
Class: Senior

Comment: Started the final five games of '05 (going 4-1). Left his Heisman calling card: 408 yards in total offense against ND in the Fiesta Bowl.

Pretty sorry cut-and-paste job from an article published before the start of last season. Troy started the last five games of 2004, going 4-1.

G-Force, we can see that you are proud of your guy and that's a good thing. We did have trouble with a certain back from Northwestern last year who had a similar profile. We'll see what he can do on the day.

Comment: Nation's leading returning rusher (1,588). If the Huskies make a BCS run, Wolfe will get an invitation to New York.

:slappy:

I will give him props, the guy is without a doubt a true star. He'll come into Columbus at a good time, when our D is still green. But........me thinks that the OSU coaching staff is letting the defense know how hyped this guy is. He'll walk in......but limp out, in the stadium where heisman campaigns go to die.

The beautiful thing about wolfe for the Buckeyes defense is he gives a legitimate reason for concern and effort going into game one.
I know every game players should go 100% but we all know that is not always the case.
If our D is not ready to go it could get scary but I love the fact that we have a legitimate offense to go up against game 1 to give us some experience before going down to texas.

What kind of numbers will Troy and Ted need to post in order to get some serious Heisman consideration?

Only two wide receivers - Tim Brown (1987) and Desmond Howard (1991) - have ever won the Heisman. Despite having a Hall of Fame career in the NFL, Brown was one of the least-deserving Heisman winners - his 1987 stats are as follows: 34 receptions for 846 yards and 4 TD's; 144 yards rushing and 1 TD; 401 yards in punt returns and 3 TD's; and 456 yards in kick-off returns and 0 TD's; in total, that's 1,847 all purpose yards and only 8 TD's for an 8-4 Notre Dame team.

Howard posted far better numbers during his Heisman year - 61 receptions for 950 yards and 19 TD's, 165 yards rushing and 2 TD's, 373 yards on kick-off returns (27.5 avg) with 1 TD, and 261 yards on punt returns (14.1 avg) and 1 TD; grand total is 1,749 total yards and 23 total TD's.

The only "dual threat" quarterback to win the Heisman in recent years was Nebraska's Eric Crouch in 2001 (another highly undeserving candidate, IMO). That season, Crouch threw for 1,510 yards and 7 TD's, while rushing for 1,115 yards and 18 TD's.

Given the above history, what do Troy and Ted need to accomplish this season to be legitimate candidates?

Wow. 19 TDs is a lot of receiving TDs for a WR in a college season.
I think the only way that Ginn has a legitimate shot is if he has over 1,000 yards receiving with around 10 TDs, a couple hundred yards rushing with a couple TDs, and over 750 return yards (punts and kickoffs) with at least 4 TDs. Even with all that, we still can't lose probably more than 2 games.

Lee Corso and Rece Davis picked Troy Smith to win the Heisman in the College Gameday season preview.

Herbie and Mark May picked Brady Quinn.

Ted Ginn Jr.: Needs 60+ catches, 10+ TD's and at least 5 TD's on special teams/rushing. Maybe even throw one to Troy Smith in the scUM game. Ted Ginn Jr., despite the natural talent he is, is a serious darkhorse for the Heisman.

Troy Smith: 2500 yards passing, completion% over 60, 20+ passing TD's, 10+ rushing TD's, and a trip to Glendale sewed up by November 19th. Period. A loss to Texas and Iowa, and Ted and Troy are out of the running.
