2006 Heisman Discussion (merged all)

Doubtful, if smith goes out and throws for over 300 yards and 4 tds, and we lose because the defense gave up a last second score to cost us the game it won't hurt smith that much. Plus he will have the rest of the year to build upon the stats and show the media what kind of player he is.

Way to have a believable scenario. :roll1: If Smith throws for 4 TDs, no way we lose. If we lose at Texas, it'll be more likely that we didn't score a lot and thus Smith's Heisman hopes are all but done.

I see both sides of this argument and agree with Mili that a big game against Texas would vault Troy to near the top of the list but even if Troy has an average game in which tOSU loses, I don't necessarily think Troy is out of the hunt.

Rarely does a player not win the Heisman b/c of an "off" week in one of the first 3 weeks of the season.

What if Troy plays like shit and we still win, then what do you think?

If he plays poorly, yet the Buckeyes still win I think that early "off" week argument applies in Smith's favor.

On the other hand, if Smith plays poorly in a nationally televised contest, viewed as a deciding influence on either team's National Championship aspirations, then no, that "off" week thesis holds far less water.

Fair response, I can live with that.

The 4 tds was an extreme example. But if Smith plays a good game and we still lose then I don't think his heisman hopes are done.

With the game being so early he will have plenty of time to make it up, will just means he has to be spot on throughout the rest of the season.

The Heisman isn't about where you start, it's about where you finish. Troy doesn't have to single-handedly beat Texas with 400-yards of total offense; he just can't lose the game. Whether he has a good game or a poor game that early in the season will mostly be forgotten as the season wears on, particularly if OSU wins that game then proceeds to lose later on down the line.

Troy's Heisman hopes will be decided in the second half of the season at Michigan State and against Michigan in the Shoe.

We're on the same page here Dryden, I don't believe a poor game in the preseason will end or make a heisman race.

You also have to take into consideration that we will be playing at Texas. If the game was to be in the 'Shoe, and we were to lose with Smith under center, then his heisman hopes might go down the drain. But since we are playing there, he has things in his favor. First of all, if we lose, I don't think it will be Troy's fault, it would be because of our young defense playing in their first huge road game early in the season. If we were to lose, but Troy put up a fight, he would DEFINITELY be in the Heisman hunt. I think we will beat Texas, and this will simply boost Troy's heisman hopes.
Here's my prediction, and let's see if you all agree:
OSU 24
Texas 14

Troy Smith: 175 passing yards 2 TD
80 rushing yards

:) Go Bucks!

I don't think they are in any kind of order, so I will just post them in order of appearance.

Gforce - Wolfe may find his way to the "Former Heisman Candidate" pile - occupied by the likes of Kliff Kingsbury and Jason Gesser.

I say that half in jest, of course. You should, no doubt, be very happy with the preseason hype Wolfe is getting.
