2006 Breakout/Surprise Players

2006 Breakout Buckeyes

The rules:

Name somebody from each aspect of the game (offense, defense, and special teams) who you think will have a breakout season next year. Incoming freshmen are fair game. If you name a player that your senile grandmother would know about, then that player cannot be a breakout player and I will find you and kick you in the junk. Also, only name one player in each category. No ties. People think soccer is lame because of ties - ties are lame here too. Grow a set, and pick just one.

My picks:

Offense: Albert Dukes. How do you try to replace Santonio Holmes? With his clone. The offense already has plenty of star power. Dukes is like Holmes, but he is not Holmes yet - and honestly, they really don't need him to be, though it certainly wouldn't hurt. They just need him to be a solid contributor at the WR postion.

Defense: Mike D'Andrea. I think he's poised to have one of them senior seasons - kinda like Jonathan Wells or Drew Carter (hopefully sans injury though.) Like those two players, D'Andrea has all the physical tools - he just needs to put it all together and do it during the complete season. He will be the most crucial X-factor in next season's defense - he'll literally be at the center of the defense, and he has some big shoes to fill at the LB position. Also, as a fifth-year senior, his leadership and relative experience will be crucial on such a young defense.

Special Teams: Tyler Moeller. The kid has a motor that just doesn't stop, and I think he'll get to cut his teeth on kick coverage - much to the chagrin of Big Ten kick returners. I bet Bobby Boucher will be the first one down the field.

Offense: Marcel Frost. Such great hands... And he's a bigole boy. Hands + Bigoleboy = TE Streaking to the endzone.

Defense: Lawrence Wilson. Cracked the 2-deep as a freshman, showed awesome moves to get around and through tackles. He can only get better, which is actually pretty scary. EDIT: Can I choose two? AMOS AMOS AMOS.

Special Teams: Erik Haw (IF selected as a punt returner): Emfinger's 6-star freak athlete is ready to ROCK. If Erik isn't selected: Pretorius. Wasn't he booting 52 yarders consistently? Wowza.

Offense- Alex Boone after 1 season of splitting time and a few starts he will take over LT/RT and dominate.

Defense- Marcus Freeman very quick LB and will definitely will be close to leading tackler.

Special Teams- A.J. Trepasso(spelling) since the offense will be so good his leg will be well rested and average 42-45 yards a punt and lead the Big 10.

Offense - Brian Robiskie (as our 4th WR behind Ginn/Gonzo/Hall).
Defense - Kurt Coleman. I think he can do what M.Jenkins did last year as a frosh.
Special Teams - AJ Trapasso. Last year, he was good, but not great. Next year's his best chance to become great. Hopefully we won't have to use him too much.

Picking Frost (O), Freeman (D), and Pretorius (ST) seemed too easy for me, so I thought I'd go out on a limb with my first 2 picks ::smiles::

Offense - Barton. He's going to be coming into his third year as a starter, but many still fail to remember he's even out there. There's a reason our team likes to run to the right side...

Defense - O'Neal. Coaches have said he's physically ready, but once the lightbulb goes on in his brain... look out!

Special Teams - Pretorious. Who, under Tressel, has not been a breakout player at the kicking position?

Offense: R. Hall
Defense: M. Freeman
Special Teams: R. Pretorious.

I like Hall cause of the size/speed he brings to the table. He could take advantage of mismatches bigtime and could get some serious YAC's in heavy traffic.

Freeman cause he's got the ingredients to be a punishing LB. And Pretorious cause he's a kicker and well...he was a S. African rugby player (right?) and that's just plain cool.

Offense: QB Rob Schoenhoft. I think he moves into the number two slot behind Troy Smith next year and will see the field as Troy engineers some blowouts

Defense: CB Andre Amos. He's been in the system for a year now and got to play against Teddy, Santonio and Tony G. everyday, mostly holding his own. Could be the biggest piece of the puzzle if he plays up to potential.

Special Teams: K Ryan Pretorious. I was big on Ryan before the '05 season and Huston had a great year. With Huston gone Ryan will step up big for us and our opponents will have to consistently begin drives at their own 20 again to score on our developing defense.

Offense: Gonzalez. He wont be matched up on a saftey/LB anymore BUT he'll still be on someones #2 and that is still advantage tOSU.

Defense: Freeman. If all the hype is correct, nothing needs to be said.

Special Teams: Special Teams. I think people are going to be shocked that we'll still be one of the best overall special teams team. Punting, kicking, returning, covering.....but if I had to pick one it would be Ginn. I think he'll give everyone his Heisman run in his "farewell" tour as a Buckeye.

Offense - Roy Hall (WR): We will have a hole to fill in the 3rd WR position. Ginn #1 (When he develops hands)...Gonzo #2 (This is set in stone)....Hall #3
Defense - James Laurinaitis (LB): Carpenter went down with a big injury. Who was there to fill his spot, none other than Laurinaitis. This kid has some talent and I look for him to be another Schlegel,Carpenter, or Hawk.
Special Teams - Ted Ginn (WR/KR/PR): He had an off season on the Special teams this year you could say. Dropping too many punts. But I think the coaches will work with him in this offseason to get him ready, and I think he will have an even better season than what he had his Freshman year.
