Monday Morning Quarterback
Hoeppner now knows OSU No. 1
As a voting member of the football coaches poll, Indiana?s Terry Hoeppner hates it when he?s right. And after a 44-3 loss to top-ranked Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus, Hoeppner knew he?s been right about the Buckeyes.
?Like I said earlier this week, I voted them No. 1 and nothing (Saturday) changed my opinion of that.?
Even though the Buckeyes had mauled seven other opponents before the Hoosiers came into Columbus, even though IU had an 0-for-14 history against No. 1 ranked teams, even though 105,000 strong is more than twice as many fans as Hoeppner is clamoring for in this week?s homecoming game against Michigan State, IU still held a lead over Ohio State ? albeit a brief 3-0 one when Austin Starr kicked a 34-yard field goal.
Ohio State then responded with 44 straight points, giving Hoeppner his worst beating since a 52-17 loss to Wisconsin on Sept. 30.
?We get the ball, go down, kick a field goal,? Hoeppner said. ?Too bad we couldn?t finish that drive off.?
The loss ended a heady two-game winning streak for IU (4-4) and a streak in which two Indiana players won Big Ten Player of the Week honors ? kick returner Marcus Thigpen for special teams in a win over Illinois and quarterback Kellen Lewis in the upset win over Iowa.
Lewis, whom Hoeppner admitted did not have a good day (15 of 28 for 106 passing yards), was spelled later in the game by former starter Blake Powers, who was 5 of 7 for 52 yards but threw two interceptions.
?(Lewis) didn?t have a lot of time,? Hoeppner said. ?I?m not going to be overly critical of any one individual, but it?s hard to find many people on our team, starting with the old head coach, who played/coached very well.
?(Lewis) didn?t have a very good game, but he wasn?t the Lone Ranger in that. I didn?t have a very good game, either.?
Looking ahead to MSU
Just when the entire football community was about ready to throw dirt on the body of the dying Michigan State Spartans, they staged one of the great comebacks in college football Saturday.
Michigan State rallied from a 38-3 deficit to Northwestern midway through the third quarter to defeat the Wildcats 41-38.
The win gives MSU (4-4) renewed hope of its own bowl aspirations. The Spartans come to Indiana on Saturday for a noon start, and Hoeppner is asking the IU fan base to show up en masse ? 50,000 strong.
Saturday?s game will be pivotal because both teams are seeking bowl berths. The Hoosiers visit Minnesota, will be home to Michigan and visit Purdue after Michigan State. After IU, the Spartans are home to Purdue and Minnesota and close out at Penn State.
?The goal we set at the beginning of the year is still in reach,? Hoeppner said. ?The challenge is still out there.
?The challenge is that we need 50,000 next week,? he said. ?That hasn?t changed. We?ll bounce back as a coaching staff and as a team. Hopefully, our fans will, too. It?s homecoming. It will be a big week; a big opportunity for us next week.?
After the game Saturday, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel offered words of encouragement to Hoeppner.
?Coach Tressel said, ?You?ll be in a bowl game,? ? Hoeppner said. ?I appreciate the confidence, the comments. I still feel the same way.?
Hoosier hits
Both IU and Ohio State came out of the game with streaks that equal 15. Indiana has lost to the No. 1 team in the country 15 straight times, and Ohio State (8-0) has a 15-game winning streak ? Lewis had his fourth game without an interception. He has thrown 121 passes since his last pick ? Ohio State quarterback and Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith had a fumble caused by freshman Jammie Kirlew, who also recovered the fumble. Both were firsts for Kirlew ? IU has a takeaway in all eight games this season.
