I think it's pretty sad that even after going on the road and beating the #2 team in the nation by 17 points, there are still several voters out there who don't vote us #1. I don't know what else can be done. Talk about result-driven voting.

The love fest for Notre Dame and USC isn't going away. Right after last night's game, Texas became "overrated" and "we really didn't look that impressive". But Notre Dame looked like they could win the NFC East to some of the media guys.

We could play and beat the Bengals and we'd still be short votes for a unanimous #1.

Good point. I also noticed on the late night highlight shows that commentators were implying that we won b/c of all of UT's dropped passes. I guess they'll just keep ignoring the fact that PSU is actually a terribly overrated team, even at #19.

suffice to say that i'm satisfied with 59 of 63 #1 votes in the Coaches poll...

I guess Auburn is a media darling now, too. That's going to be rough for them because, like many Ohio State fans, being "victims of the media" is so ingrained in their psyche. It'd be like taking away "The Curse" from the Red Sox fans: their self-constructed collective identity would have a gaping hole.

We could simply enjoy the fact that tOSU just got a historic road victory over the defending national champions, ending the longest winning streak in the country.

We could be proud of the fact that we root for the #1 team in the land, which received #1 votes from a combined 90% of the voters in the AP and USA Today Coaches' polls.

Or we could choose to focus on a handful of folks that ranked another team higher, and whine about it. But I'd like to express the opinion that I'm tired of all of the bitching and whining over every perceived slight to tOSU.

OSU has smooth road to undefeated season

Before Sept. 10, 2005, most of us in the sports media decided that the winner of the Ohio State-Texas football game in Columbus would be the favorite to win the national championship.
Whadaya know? Texas won that game, and the Longhorns became the national champions.
So, what does Saturday night's 24-7 win against No. 2 Texas in Austin mean for this season's Ohio State squad, the one ranked No. 1 with a 2-0 start?
It means that the Buckeyes have to be a favorite to appear in January's national championship game.
I don't say this necessarily because I think the Buckeyes are one of the best two teams in the country (although I think they are). But, look at their schedule. Nearly everyone worried about a loss this regular season has pointed to the game Sept. 30 against Iowa in Iowa City.
Did you see what the Hawkeyes did Saturday? They beat Syracuse by seven points. In double overtime. The same Syracuse that had lost 10 straight games.
OSU's other road games are against Michigan State (potentially a problem), Illinois (33-0 loser to ? sigh ? Rutgers on Saturday) and Northwestern (34-17 loser to Division I-AA New Hampshire).
OK, it looks like I'm saying Ohio State's schedule is easy. That's not exactly true. But, if the Buckeyes make it to Oct. 7 against Bowling Green 5-0 and 2-0 in the Big Ten, there's no reason they shouldn't finish the season undefeated.
Don't forget, Jim Tressel gets Michigan at home Nov. 18.

Jim Tressel?s poll vote this week shouldn?t surprise anyone. Ohio State?s head coach wasn?t so sure last week his football team deserved to be No. 1 in the country.
There is no denying it after Saturday night. The Buckeyes left Texas Memorial Stadium the way so few opponents do: With a victory.
The 24-7 win solidified the Buckeyes? positions in the USA Today coaches? poll and media poll. OSU had 56 first-place votes in the Associated Press poll, 59 in the coaches poll. Notre Dame was second in both.
Now the challenge ahead of the Buckeyes is to maintain with 10 games left to play.
?We?re not laying claim to anything other than we?re 2-0,? Tressel said.
Much was made ? and should have been ? of the night quarterback Troy Smith had in Austin. He was nearly perfect. Smith didn?t panic with pressure in his face.
When his first option, Ted Ginn Jr., was covered, he threw to Anthony Gonzalez. The junior from St. Ignatius had a career night with eight catches for 142 yards and a touchdown.
?It doesn?t take a great deal of intelligence to know they?re going to pay more attention to Teddy than to me, and they should,? Gonzalez said.
Ginn caught five for 97 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown pass that was a back-breaker before halftime.
?It was single coverage on Teddy,? Tressel said. ?And whenever we have single coverage on Teddy, we have a good chance.?
The win, Smith said, does not avenge last year?s loss to Texas. The Longhorns beat the Buckeyes in Ohio Stadium. That win propelled Texas to a national title.
Gonzalez says revenge is when someone wrongs you.
?It?s not a revenge thing,? Smith said. ?Each and every win we get in the course of a season is a good win.?
OSU is 3-0 in games when No. 1 meets No. 2. Tressel is 8-2 against Top 10 opponents. The Buckeyes also broke a four-game road night-game losing streak. They have one more night game left, Sept. 30 at Iowa.
The rare home loss for Texas was just the fourth in the 48 games at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. It happened because the same kind of plays that went for Texas last year went against them Saturday.
Wide receiver Limas Sweed made an incredible catch to score the game-winning TD just inside the end zone a year ago. He dropped what would have been an amazing one-handed catch in the end zone Saturday.
Receiver Billy Pittman lost a fumble inside the OSU 5 when he tried to stretch the ball across the goal line. The Buckeyes fumbled a year ago on their desperation last drive.
Last year, Texas? defense grew up against Ohio State. This year, it might have been the Buckeyes? young defense.
Sure, Smith?s TD passes to Gonzalez and Smith led to a 14-7 Ohio State lead, but the defense forced key turnovers and didn?t give up the big play.
?They drove a lot and did a lot, but we were able to stop them toward the red zone and hold them to 7 points,? senior defensive lineman Quinn Pitcock said. ?... The defense did work well. I think we did improve from last week. We stepped up, but once again we have to work hard each week and get better.?

Ohio Statement: Top Spot Firmly In Buckeyes' Grasp

If this season goes anything like last year, we may already have one team locked into a berth in the national title game.

Last September, Texas won what might have been the earliest national semifinal in college football history. The Longhorns' memorable 25-22 victory at Ohio State cemented their hold on the No. 2 spot in The Associated Press poll, setting them up for their Rose Bowl victory over No. 1 Southern Cal.

This year, it's Ohio State's turn. After a 24-7 victory at No. 2 Texas on Saturday night, the Buckeyes put a headlock on the No. 1 spot in the poll. Ohio State (2-0) gained 20 first-place votes for a total of 56 - only nine shy of unanimous No. 1 status.

"I thought it was really smart to play it last year," Texas coach Mack Brown said of the two-game series between top five powerhouses, "and this year it was really stupid."

With a new vacancy to fill at No. 2, Notre Dame (2-0) apparently regained the grace it lost last week, using a 41-17 rout of Penn State to move up behind Ohio State. The Irish had three first-place votes and 1,468 points.

No. 3 Auburn (1,447 points) and No. 4 Southern Cal each had two first-place votes, with the Trojans only one point behind. West Virginia had two first-place votes and moved up one spot to fifth.

Sunday's poll movement created some eye-catching matchups for this weekend. While none are as big as Saturday's 1-2 showdown, there are matchups of Nos. 2 and 11 (Notre Dame hosting Michigan State); Nos. 3 and 6 (Auburn hosting LSU); Nos. 7 and 13 (Florida at Tennessee); and Nos. 12 and 17 (Louisville hosting Miami). ... No. 18 Oregon moved up two spots after scoring a late touchdown a fake field goal to beat Fresno State 31-24 Saturday night in Fresno, Calif. Mike Bellotti became the school's career wins leader with his 92nd.

Burning With Pride

If the Buckeyes do go on to win the title, maybe quarterback Troy Smith should hoist a flaming mattress rather than the crystal football trophy. Apparently, that's the only way to celebrate huge victories these days: by burning furniture.

The kids in Columbus were at it Saturday night, celebrating the Buckeyes' victory by torching couches and mattresses in student neighborhoods. Forty fires were reported and five students were arrested on arson charges. Yes, nothing says "We are the champions" quite like the scent of a singed Sealy.

OSU student George Karadimas, 22, was charged with vehicular assault after school police said he hit three people.
