2006 BCS, polls, Bowl Predictions and computer ratings

I cant believe those votes(poll on espn main pg), 40% ND. I guess everyone overlooks the 8 average to below average starters they have returning to their defense. Wouldnt be surprised if Calvin Johnson gives them more than they can handle in week 1.

I see you've forgotten that what seems logical concerning the AP polls #1 votes should not be assumed when ND is only one spot behind you. Despite our scheduele being tougher then ND's I don't think for a second that we would finish the regular season at number 1 if both OSU and ND went undefeated.

I see where you're going, but with all due respect, there's no way that any team would jump us if we're pre-ranked number one in both polls, and we beat everyone on our schedule, solely because we have a quality schedule. While I won't disagree with you on there being a certain amount of ND bias floating around, pollsters/coaches aren't stupid, and realize when biased voting/logic has been stretched too far.

Also, we've got the BCS system, so everything should be sorted out without controversy. :wink2:

They were doing a phone in to a straw man question about the AP poll on ESPN Sports Radio earlier this evening.

Straw-man question -
"The top 3 are

Ohio State
Notre dame
Texas.

Which of these do you the caller believe does not belong?"

There were about a dozen calls taken in response, from around the country.

Number of times Notre Dame was dissed, about 4
Number of times Texas was given short thrift for being over-rated, or ranked a slot or more too high - 8
Number of times Ohio State was tagged as too highly rated - none.

I found the whole thing interesting. Not because I gave much weight to the callers opinions. Rather, in a year like this when the teams are closer together at the top you would have expected at least one shot at the top slot being over-ranked.

It was also, frankly, surprising to me that by almost 2 to 1 the "does not belong in the top 3" sentiment went against Texas, rather than Notre Dame. Mostly frequently cited rationale, the lack of Vince Young.

PRESEASON POLL
No. 1 Buckeyes hope to finish where they start

For Ohio State, the 2006 season will be a matter of Hang on, Sloopy because the Associated Press preseason poll made it a consensus: The Buckeyes are No. 1.
The AP poll, released yesterday, had OSU at the top followed by Notre Dame, Texas, Auburn and West Virginia. The Buckeyes already were picked No. 1 by the USA Today coaches poll, and this week Sports Illustrated made them the favorite.
"At Ohio State, whether you’re ranked high or you’re not ranked high, the expectation to win all your games is there," coach Jim Tressel said.
Being No. 1 can put a target on a team, but running back Antonio Pittman said the Buckeyes understand that.
"It’s an honor to be picked No. 1," Pittman said. "But it doesn’t mean (anything) if we get knocked off early. So we have to go out there and ignore the polls and ignore all the hype we’re getting and just play ball."
But is the Buckeyes’ preseason ranking legitimate?
"Yeah, without a doubt; I’d pick us No. 1," Pittman said.
He knows what swayed the pollsters.
"They are looking at all the talent we have coming back, offensively and defensively," Pittman said.
The Buckeyes are replacing 12 starters, nine on the defensive side, including the back seven. But Pittman said quite a few of those defenders — including defensive backs Malcolm Jenkins and Brandon Mitchell, and linebackers Marcus Freeman, John Kerr and James Laurinaitis — have played more than people think.
"We have a lot of guys coming back with experience that are being overlooked," Pittman said. "I think we have a good team."
This marks the sixth time that Ohio State has been No. 1 in the AP preseason poll, but it failed to finish No. 1 each of those seasons. The last time the Buckeyes were the consensus No. 1 team in the preseason was 1998, but they were knocked off late in the season by Michigan State. Whereas when OSU won the national title in 2002 with a victory over Miami in the Bowl Championship Series title game, it started No. 13 in the AP poll.
Although AP administrators last year would not allow the BCS to use its poll in the formula to determine the two teams in the national title game, it still awards a national championship trophy. That is one reason for the rub with the BCS. In 2003, Louisiana State and Oklahoma were matched in the national title game (won by LSU), based on the BCS formula, even though Southern California was No. 1 in the AP.

2006 BCS, polls, and computer ratings

Since the season has begun, I have locked the preseason poll thread and started this new thread for the season polls, which are due out tomorrow.

Any discussion about the polls, the BCS, computer ratings would be relevant for this thread.

One Week Is Just One Week

Too early to jump to conclusions following first games
Sept. 5, 2006

Please keep the following in mind...It was ONE week!!!!!

The season is not over for some teams. The national champion has not been decided yet, and neither has the Heisman Trophy. It amazes me how quick people are to make judgments and conclusions based on 60 minutes of football. With that being said...here are my judgments and conclusions based on 60 minutes of football.

I must admit going into this season that the last team that I thought I would be writing about in a positive way would be the Tennessee Volunteers. I really thought that sooner, rather than later, we would be talking about replacing Phil Fulmer. I thought that Coach Fulmer had a great run, but that new energy was needed to continue the great tradition that is Volunteer football.

Take two.

The statement of the weekend was made by Fulmer, his staff and players. I enjoyed hearing how Cal was an SEC-type team - full of speed and athletes that would not be intimidated by the crowd in Knoxville. Maybe they weren't intimidated by the crowd, but they got waxed on the field. Now that was Tennessee football. I think the Vols simply had lost sight of who they were in the past.

This is Tennessee football - a rugged, physical offensive line that establishes the line of scrimmage to open up play-action down the field combined with a fast and aggressive defensive unit. Both were on display Saturday. The offense produced over 200 yards rushing, QB Erik Ainge was 11-of-18 for 291 yards and four touchdowns, and the defense limited Cal's Heisman-calber RB Marshawn Lynch to 74 yards. Apparently, new offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe did make a difference.

Conclusion: Tennessee is now the team to beat in the SEC East, and Oct. 7 at Georgia will settle the standings.

Next conclusion: USC is still pretty good. Arkansas is still pretty bad.

John David Booty was not spectacular, but he was good. I cannot begin to explain how difficult it is to go on the road in the SEC and win any game, and it is even tougher to go to Arkansas and play a team that was emotionally ready to get revenge for the beat down that happened last year.

After a slow start, the Trojans found their groove and continue to remain the best in the Pac-10. Is it really even a race? Arizona State, Arizona and the previously mentioned Cal are not in the Trojans league. The only teams that could scare the men of Troy are the Bruins of UCLA, and the Ducks of Oregon. How come we don't mention the job that Karl Dorrell is doing at UCLA more often? The Bruins unloaded on a pretty good Utah team 31-10. Ben Olson was terrific going 25-of-33 for 318 yards and three touchdowns.

Speaking of teams being back - not as if they were ever away, just not on the front page of college football -- how about those Oregon Ducks? You know Mike Bellotti has taken some heat for underperforming teams the past few years. From 5-6 two years ago to 10-2 last year, might he have a special team this year? He sure has a tailback. Sophomore Jonathan Stewart is a man! This offense needs production in a big way from the tailback position, which sure is making things easier for QB Dennis Dixon. Oregon's game in two weeks against Oklahoma will tell a lot.

The Iowa Hawkeyes sure told me a lot. Albert Young and Drew Tate together are as potent a combination as Troy Smith and Ted Ginn of Ohio State. Throw in the fact that Iowa has one of the best defensive coordinators in the country in Norm Parker, and the Hawkeyes could be the best team in the Big Ten. Speaking of Parker, I bet you never even heard his name. He has only been at Iowa eight years and consistently has the Hawks at the top of the league in defense. Iowa held Division I-AA Montana to 144 yards of total offense Saturday.

Ohio State is not nearly as good defensively this year as they were last year. I know it seems pretty obvious, but stop telling me about talent. Northern Illinois TB Garrett Wolfe is an outstanding player. I would take him over just about any other tailback in the country. But 285 yards of total offense? Were they keying on someone else? You do not simply replace A. J. Hawk, Donte Whitner and Bobby Carpenter...you get the point. The Buckeyes will be awesome on offense all year, but will the defense be the only thing that stands in the way of another national championship?

I am getting really excited about the Clemson Tigers, who might be headed for a special season. Rob Spence is working wonders with that offense. I feel really bad for middle linebacker and leading returning tackler Anthony Waters who blew out his knee in the opener. Football teaches tough lessons.

Away from football, for those of you with kids, Steve Irwin was a hero of my son, Chase. His "Crocodile Hunter" episodes provided many hours of entertainment, as well as useful information. I must admit I also enjoyed the risks that Mr. Irwin took to deliver insightful creative programs that were refreshingly pure. Thanks, Steve. You will be missed.
