A little off topic, my apologies, but...

"The Buckeyes' Jim Tressel is a finalist for the George Munger coach-of-the-year award along with Rutgers' Greg Schiano and Notre Dame's Charlie Weis."

:roll1: ...way to just get by Georgia Tech, pull off miracle wins against terrible teams in Michigan State and UCLA, beat up on Purdoodoo and the cupcake service academies, and get thoroughly destroyed and embarrassed at home by TSUN, the only good team they've played so far. IMO, Houston Nutt should be on that list instead of Charlie "Chocolate Factory" Weis. And of course JT should win it.

By the way, whoever came up with the NA comment hit the nail on the head, Notre Ame, they have no D. Pretty much sums it up.

Ginn/Gonzo question: It's like saying which of your kids you love the most.

However, I fully agree with those who recognize Teddy's threat is what makes the rest of the offense open up. I have 100% faith in our coaching staff and if you look as the year went on Teddy had more Buckeye stickers than anyone after a game when his stats might not have been as good as Gonzo's. Innacurate I know but it tells me the staff recognizes all TG does that never shows on a stat sheet for him.

I also fully believe he suffers from higher expectations than the others from us, the fans. During The Game my cousin and I were thinking Ted was having a bad game due to the drops, then the facts showed on the scoreboard and he was leading the team in receptions...again. Ho Hum. A little lesson in perception vs reality and different expectation levels for us.

Bottom line is when you have a player who is literally a threat to score on every play(often overused hyperbole in football but 100% true in TG's case) it puts an ungodly amount of pressure on a defense. Now make options B/C/D/E all good players in their own right and you have what we see this year, offensive domination.

I think if you believe that Ohio State's 9 first team all big ten players are legitimately being recognized here, along with your quarterback being big ten POY/Heisman trophy winner, then I don't get complaining about Tressell not being coach of the year. Ohio State should have run the table with that kind of talent.

I would argue that Hardy or Bryant deserved to be on over Manningham. Manningham just didn't have the body of work due to injury. Hardy had the talent and stats to back it up. Bryant was the #1 wide receiver in the conference statistically by a pretty good margin.

Travis Beckum not being 1st or 2nd team coaches was a pretty big joke. He is rivals #1 TE in the country. He's the #1 TE in the country statistically. He's #2 in the conference for receiving yards only behind Bryant. Iowa fans were disappointed in Chandler this year. That was a pretty big snub. I'm proud that Ikegwonu got the recognition though. I wasn't sure he was being noticed.

Should have run the table huh? I'm sure you weren't one of the guys laughing at OSU being preseason #1 losing 9 starters on D right?

I agree Beckum should be a no brainer.

If you are implying that just having talent wins championships than I would like to point you towards a man named Cooper.

Ginn vs Gonzo

I think Gonzo is great, but Teddy is the straw that stirs the drink. I think it is also valid to consider that Ginn often drew the best CB for the opposing defense. I can't help but remember the Texas game when Ross was following Ginn around and Gonzo was abusing the other guy the entire game. Ginn played a big role in Gonzo's success this year.

It could have gone either way. But Coach Tressel also deserves credit for cultivating that talent. It's not as if our starting lineup on boths sides was littered with 5-star talent. They were coached to the point where they are now.

And Painter led the Big Ten statistically in passing as well. But when you run a video game offense, that will happen. Ginn and Gonzo should have been your first teamers.

Agree. I was shocked he wasn't on the 1st team. He's a monster.

You're right, I wasn't one of those people. I thought that the Buckeyes would go undefeated and win the national championship before the season. I also had pretty high hopes for the Badgers unlike most though, but still had them slightly underrated with a prediction of 10-2 instead of 11-1. Although after I saw how bad Iowa would be, I changed that to 11-1 about midseason. But I didn't think Wisconsin would be as competitive as they were at Michigan with no established receivers at that time, nor would they win many of the games they won as emphatically. Bielema is a fantastic young coach, and I'm not easily pleased when it comes to coaches. I was critical of Alvarez's conservative style quite a bit. I think he took Wisconsin to a certain level, but that style kept Wisconsin from elevating to that next elite level. Alvarez would have never thought of doing what Bielema did to Penn State with the kickoff rule loophole, and he never fake punted whereas Bielema is fake punting up 2 td's v. Purdue in an attempt to stick the dagger in. I love the guy's killer instinct. He seems to be picking up steam in recruiting and I think he will take the Badgers to even higher heights than they were at under Alvarez. Alvarez was running out of gas too. He said he lost his passion for coaching earlier in this decade, and as a result we suffered a few disappointing seasons. We needed new blood and we got it.

I'd also like to point out that it's easier to have a civil debate with you guys than many other groups of fans (primarily Iowa and Michigan fans). There are some haters here, but most can give credit where credit is due. And I can as well I believe.

Give Charlie credit, its not easy winning the Commander-in-chief trophy with ND's lack of talent on defense.

OHIO STATE INSIDER

Bucks, Wolverines dominate honors

Sunday, November 26, 2006
Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- If you had any doubt that Ohio State and Michigan were the best two teams in the Big Ten, check out the all-Big Ten teams announced this week.
The 12-0 Buckeyes had nine first-team selections on the coaches' team, while 11-1 Michigan had eight. Ohio State had eight first-team picks on the media team, while the Wolverines had seven. No other Big Ten team had more than two first-teamers on either list.
The best players in the conference represented the two best units - Ohio State's offense and Michigan's defense.
Quarterback Troy Smith was named the offensive player of the year for both teams and was a unanimous pick by the media, while Michigan defensive end LaMarr Woodley was named the defensive player of the year.
Seven Buckeyes were first-team selections for both teams: Smith, center Doug Datish and guard T.J. Downing on offense and tackle Quinn Pitcock, linebacker James Laurinaitis and cornerbacks Malcolm Jenkins and Antonio Smith on defense.
Running back Antonio Pittman was a first-team pick by the coaches and a second-team selection by the media. Interestingly, Ted Ginn Jr. was a first-team receiver according to the media and second-team for the coaches, while Anthony Gonzalez made the first team for the coaches and was an honorable mention pick by the media.
OSU defensive end Vernon Gholston and safety Brandon Mitchell made the second team on both squads. Defensive tackle David Patterson also was chosen for the second team by the coaches. Offensive tackle Kirk Barton was a second-team pick by the media.
Awards ahead:
Smith will start a whirlwind awards tour next week, attending several All-American banquets before heading to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Dec. 9. The finalists for the Heisman will be announced on Dec. 6.
Laurinaitis will attend award ceremonies as a finalist for the Nagurski Award, for best defensive player, and Butkus Award, for best linebacker. Pitcock is one of four finalists for the Lombardi Award, presented on Dec. 6.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel is also eagerly anticipating Smith's expected honor as the winner of the Silver Football, handed out to the Big Ten MVP since 1924.
"We haven't had a Silver Football winner since Joe Germaine in 1998," Tressel said. "So I'm hoping we can get another one of those hanging up."
Reliving the rematch:
Tressel continues to dance around the idea of a Michigan rematch. But at the very least, he doesn't believe this is what the BCS was built for.
"If that's what the system spits out, then I don't think it's wrong," Tressel said. "I don't know that the intention of the system was to have it end up being one conference with their first-place and second-place teams playing, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. I don't know if that was the intention."
