QB Smith, Piqua's Pitcock earn All-America honors

Ohio State defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock was named a first-team All-American on Wednesday by the American Football Coaches Association.
Pitcock, a senior from Piqua, led the Buckeyes with eight sacks despite missing one game with a concussion. He was second on the team with 11 tackles for losses.
Quarterback Troy Smith was also named an AFCA first-team All-American after throwing a school-record 30 touchdown passes with just five interceptions.

Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith and defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock have been named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America team that will be officially announced today. The first of several All-American teams to be unveiled, the AFCA team is selected by college head coaches and featured linebacker A.J. Hawk as the only Buckeye last season.

Congrats to Gonzo and Stan White on being named to the First Team Academic All-America Team and 'Little Animal' being named to the Second Team.

"The Buckeye grove was actually started back in the '30s with the idea that a tree would be planted for each All-American football player," said Bill Wahl, an Ohio State historian.

Associate Director of Athletics Bill Myles said there are six or seven All-American lists decided by different associations including The Associated Press and the American Football Coaches Association. If a player makes the majority of those lists, they are given a tree, he said.
