I'm in. Not sure when I'll get up there, but I'm in.

PM me next week and let me know if/when you are getting here and what position you want to play (we could even sneak you in at fly if you want).

one last reminder...this is the biggie folks. the start of the playoffs and our quest to defend our Midwest title. and I don't need to tell anyone that it doesn't matter if we are playing Michigan in rugby, football, squash, beer pong, tiddlywinks, etc. it's Michigan, we hate them, and we want to bury them in the middle of the fucking field...

A little preview of the weekend from a national perspective...

College playoffs hitting pace

By Brian Lowe

Although we’re only at the end of October, for a lot of college teams it’s already time to adjust to post-season play, and this weekend there’s a feast of action going on.

For openers, the New England DI competition moves into the semi-final stage with Army, Dartmouth, Harvard and Northeastern all in the thick of things to determine seedings for the Northeast playoffs which start the following weekend.

Army hosts Harvard with the winner being seeded #1 and the loser #3 going into the Northeast post-season. In the other game, Dartmouth is away at Northeastern with the winner getting the #2 seed and the loser #4.

Meantime in the Midwest, the playoffs get underway with the quarter-finals. The eight teams still alive include Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois State, Bowling Green, Purdue, Minnesota and Northern Iowa. The four winners will go through to the next round next weekend. OSU and Northern Iowa are seen as the teams to beat, while Bowling Green and Indiana could join them in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, teams aren’t at the playoff stage yet, but there are some interesting matchups on tap nonetheless. In the West, Colorado State, fresh off their big upset win over Air Force, travel to Albuquerque to tangle with the University of New Mexico, while Wyoming hosts the Zoomies in Laramie in Western sub-region League matches.

Still in the West, Oklahoma makes the long road trip north to Lincoln to hook up with Nebraska, while Truman State hosts Kansas State in Central sub-region League games.

In the Mid-Atlantic conference, frontrunners Penn State and Navy will both be in action, although not against each other. The Nittany Lions host George Mason and the Midshipmen are away to the University of Maryland. Both unbeaten teams will be using this weekend’s fixtures to tune up for their top of the table clash next weekend in Annapolis.

One other game of note going on this weekend is in Utah where the Utes will play host to Utah Valley South College. So, make sure to check back with American Rugby News over the weekend to catch up on all the news, scores and highlights from what promises to be another exciting round of college rugby.

Ohio State 59 Michigan 0

Great day for the Bucks...we came out running and hit two quick ones in the first few minutes and then followed that up with a pushover try by the pack to take a quick 17-0 lead. And the race was on...halftime score was 47-0. We were able to get a lot of subs in during the second half, and although we didn't really keep our foot on the gas the way I would have liked, I was glad to see us pitch a shutout. I will post the game recap later...

I will post the full gallery later, but for starters, here is the biggest hit of the day IMO (this guy turned to his blindside and got absolutely destroyed):

Here is a recap...

Ohio State Moves On

By Alex Goff

October 29, 2005 – The final score was Ohio State 59 University of Michigan 0, but head coach Tom Rooney was not completely thrilled.

The OSU head coach pointed to the fact his team led 47-0 at the half of the Midwest quarterfinal and, he felt, has let their foot off the gas in the second 40.

"We haven't played a full 80 minutes yet," Rooney said. "I think it's mostly a case of focus. We need to focus better."

OSU has succeeded not playing traditional OSU rugby. Their pack is relatively small and they have had to be a little more shifty. It's a good exercise for all involved. Today they struggled at times in keeping the ball, but defended very well, forcing Michigan to kick, which turned out to the the Wolverines' undoing. Six of the nine tries came from counterattacks, with fullback Doug Olson scoring two and setting up another, and wing Nick Bell scoring a couple also and setting up two.

They also got a sweetly-taken drop goal from flyhalf Tonderai Kambarami.

"We've had games where we've played brilliantly for 15 minutes and then gone to sleep," said Rooney, clearly hoping next weekend's game against Indiana in the Midwest semifinals will be their opportunity to put in a full 80.
In other Midwest news, the University of Minnesota put in what has to be considered a big upset 38-10 at University of Northern Iowa.

This pits the Golden Gophers against the winner of Bowling Green and Purdue, to be played tomorrow. Minnesota lost 19-15 to Bowling Green in Indiana a few weeks ago, and hope to get another shot.

In Midwest DII Michigan State beat Miami of Ohio and Ohio University won against Franciscan. Those two meet tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

Upset and blowouts in Midwest playoffs

By Brian Lowe

Minnesota has scored what must be regarded as a big upset by downing the highly-fancied Northern Iowa 38-10 in the Midwest DI playoffs Saturday.

Although Minnesota was the higher seed, Northern Iowa went into the game rated by many as favorites based on their impressive fall season, but at the end of the day they were outgunned by a ramped up Minnesota, which now advances to the Finals next weekend in Columbus, OH.

Elsewhere, #4 Ohio State stayed true to form by shutting out Michigan 59-0 to qualify for the Finals. The Buckeyes led 47-0 at halftime and ran in a total of nine tries while keeping their own goal line intact. Among the try-scorers were fullback Doug Olson (2), wing Nick Bell (2), center Alex Moller (2), scrumhalf Cody Albright (1), winger Andrew Kender (1) and flanker Bubba Bleakmore (1). Kender added three conversions, while Zimbabwean flyhalf Tonderai Kambarami slotted a perfectly judged dropped goal to round out the scoring.

“We have yet to put together a full game, but we’re rolling,” Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told American Rugby News. “I thought in the first half we played to our potential. We were popping it outside to the wings. Our wings and fullback scored most of the tries.”

The victory extended the Buckeyes’ winning streak to six and improved their record to 6-1.

In the other Saturday game, Indiana ran out comfortable 67-5 winners over Illinois State to also make it to next weekend’s Finals.
