Ohio State crowned Midwest champs

296.jpg

By Brian Lowe
#4 Ohio State has been crowned 2005 Midwest champions, but not before enduring a gutsy challenge from an extremely determined Purdue in the Final under the lights Saturday night in Columbus, OH.

The Buckeyes won 38-19, scoring six tries to three, but it was a seven-point game with less than ten minutes to go. OSU benefited from a couple of Purdue handling errors as the Boilermakers pulled out all stops in an effort to close the gap. Ohio State scored two tries in the last seven minutes to put the game out of reach.

Purdue opened the scoring in the fourth minute when second rower Dave Newlin dotted down out wide for the first of his two tries on the night, but the Buckeyes struck back, led by eightman Jake LeGros, who notched a hat-trick, to go to the main break leading 19-7.

In the second forty, it was a case of one side scoring and the other retaliating with a score of their own before OSU was able to capitalize on Purdue mistakes, enabling them to ice the game. For the Buckeyes, lock Eric Shulte, breakaway Brandon Jewett and center Alex Moller scored the other tries, while wing Andrew Kender booted four conversions.

“We’re small and they’re big and if you don’t run on them the meat will catch you,” Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney told American Rugby News. “I guess our forwards did the damage, but that surprised me a bit as their forwards were rocking and rolling.”

From Purdue’s perspective, they were in it until the final ten minutes when they tried to push the passes. Aside from Newlin, winger Gary Larimer crossed for a try and flyhalf Ryan Weiss added two conversions. It was also the final match in Boilermaker colors for captain Chase Bortone and hooker Jim Pelton. Both are seniors and will be graduating.

“It was a hell of a match, the boys played hard and I’m very proud of them,” Purdue head coach Erik Vaughn told ARN. “From what we’ve been through this season you couldn’t ask for anything else. It could’ve gone either way, but Ohio State stepped up in defense and we just couldn’t punch it through.”

As a result, OSU will be the #1 seed from the Midwest and Purdue #2 going into the national collegiate championship Round of Sixteen in the spring. Ohio State finished the fall with an 8-1 record, while Purdue went 3-4.

In the consolation match to decide third and fourth places, Indiana edged Minnesota 12-10.

Thanks to all...especially RugbyBuck and the future Mrs. RugbyBuck for making the trip over to see the games. Saturday night was a hard fought battle...one which we were fortunate to come out of with a victory. The game was much closer than the score indicated and I can safely say that many of our guys were banged up afterwards. I met up with several of the players on Sunday morning to watch the women's championship (the OSU women won the Midwest title in OT against Northern Iowa), and several of them were limping up to the pitch with bruises on their arms, faces, shoulders, etc. Suffice it to say that we came away with a win against a good Purdue team, but we took a physcial beating in the process. They were just so much bigger than us and played a smashmouth style meant to wear the opposition down. But luckily our fitness showed in the second half and we were able to get a couple of quick ones at the end to make it look a lot worse than it really was (RugbyBuck can attest to that).

Here is another article on the game...

Ohio State Holds Off Purdue

November 6, 2005, Columbus, Ohio – Eighth-ranked Ohio State held off a big and powerful Purdue team that didn’t stop coming at them Saturday night to win the Midwest men’s college DI title.

Thanks in large part to a strong finish and some good work in the lineouts, led by No. 8 Jake LeGros, Ohio State weathered the storm to win 38-19. But it was a lot closer than that.

"It was a small fast team against a big team if you don’t get some points on them fast and early, they can cause problems," said Ohio State head coach Tom Rooney.

They did, and they did. It was the Boilermakers who scored first, having little trouble notching seven points in the first four minutes as they spread the field and rounded the Ohio State wing. Wing Gary Larimer did the honors.

But OSU came back, quick-tapping off a penalty and running the ball through the hands to score. And they added to that as pressure off a kick forced an attacking lineout for Ohio State, and LeGros powered over. Soon after that the Buckeyes stole a Purdue scrum put-in, and LeGros smartly picked and ran 40 meters for make it 19-7 Ohio State.

But that didn’t beat down Purdue. Lock Dave Newlin scored after Purdue made about 50 meters on a series of quick tap penalties and Ohio State was unable to get back quickly enough. Now it was 26-14 after fullback Ryan Weis' second conversion.

"We were feeling that now it was getting a little more comfortable, but we were wrong," said Rooney.

At the half Ohio State lost the services of flyhalf Tonderai Kambarami with a hamstring injury and had to adjust.

Purdue blasted right through a porous Ohio State defense to score and make it 26-19, Newlin again finishing it off. And it was only late that OSU scored off another lineout and then finished it up with a big run from center Alex Moller.

OSU were Midwest champions, but only after a very hard day at the office.

"We gave up about 30 pounds a guy but we hung in there," said Rooney.

Purdue hooker Jim Pelton was among a group of bruising forwards who were very hard to stop with the ball in hand. The Boilermakers also produced some surprises.

"They changed their lineout package from Friday and brought in a few wrinkles," said Rooney. "They kicked more than we expected and were good at it."

"We played very hard as did OSU you have to give credit to all the boys; it was one helluva match," said Purdue head coach Erik Vaughn, adding that Ohio State and Rooney were good and gracious hosts.

"My boys played as hard as they could and had the toughest three matches in six days that I could remember; Bowling Green, Minnesota and then Ohio State," Vaugh added. "I couldn't be been prouder of this team for their effort and no-quit attitude. With all the injuries we have sustained this season they really showed their character."

Said Pelton, who will graduate this fall; "I'm proud to have played my last match with a group of men that don't and won't quit"

From here we will take a few weeks off to rest before beginning our winter workouts. We have two possible tours planned this winter...one down South to play the likes of UNC and Clemson and one out West to play teams like BYU and Utah. After that we will being our preperation for the Sweet 16. As champions of the Midwest, we will travel the weekend of 4/21-4/23 to West Point to play the Northeast #2 seed (which last year was Dartmouth). A win there will have us playing the winner of the Mid-Atlantic #1 and the Pacific #4 (likely to be Penn State) for a chance to go to the Final 4, which will be at Stanford the weekend of 5/5-5/7.
