There's no chance Freddie and Jamario aren't on special teams this fall, either as gunners or blocking punts. Freddie obliterated some of Teddy's track records this year, I think by like 0.2 seconds in a short sprint. They both have tons of speed and are solid hitters (and hopefully tacklers)... and keep in mind we play plenty of teams like Miami, SDSU, IU, Illinois, etc. If not all year, they'll start at special teams against those guys. They have too much talent to not use their speed to our advantage, let alone getting them game experience for when we need them to take on bigger roles (like Jamario at corner?).

Freddie Lenix will see the playing field this year simply because he'll give the coaching staff no other choice. Tressel loves his special teams and Freddie will be a complete head-hunter.

I got to see Freddie play as a junior, didn't get to see them last year. Between Ginn, O'Neal, and Freddie, Freddie was the most impressive that I saw. He hits like a freight train, may very well be the best "football player" of this incoming class.

The world of football today lost not only a great player but a great person with the passing of Sam Mills. Sam Mills showed that the combines and the "prototype" really mean nothing if you can't play the game. Sam, at 5'9" was one of the best linebackers of his era, could flat out "play the game." So, don't sell Freddie short based on his size, I still see this kid as being a dominating linebacker here before he leaves.

Do walk-ons count? If so my pick is Ryan Pretorious. I hope Huston gets the nod for FG's and PAT's early on due to his maturity and experience. I have heard through practice that Pretorious has the leg to kick at least 60 yards. If that is true and he gets it together, his kick-offs would be welcomed and that chance at the end of the half or game to kick a really long one would be awesome. Lets face it no one is replacing Nuge, but word is Pretorious has the best chance overall.

I don't actually know if he would be considered a freshman or not but he hasn't played yet and wasn't on the roster so I guess that would make him a frosh wouldn't it?

per Ozone:

Kicker
23 Josh Huston* 6-1, 195, 5 th-Sr.
32 Ryan Pretorius 5-10, 190, R-Fr.

That being said....this WILL be the best o-line since maybe 96.....
Alan, my man, you are, as usual, right on the money! If you think back to any great team you've ever seen -- at tOSU, elsewhere in college or the NFL -- the one common denominator is always a great O-line. You simply cannot excel in football if your offense doesn't get blocking and/or pass protection. Period.

I am pumped to hear Alan make this statement so categorically, because he always has good insights and is nearly always right. If the O-line is even close to as good as everyone is predicting, the Bucks will be a scoring juggernaut ...all the way to Pasadena.

Lennix simply has no where to play right now while they figure out where to plug him in. Translation: He'll be a special-teams monster.QUOTE]

I agree he could be to special teams this year like Sirjo was last year.

Also, Jamario and Worthington (if he is the real deal).

Jamario is one the top rated freshmen at our thinest position (CB).

If Worthington can effectively pass rush (another weakness of last year's team) he'll play too.

O'Neal for the simple fact that they're already talking about ways to get him on the field.

Depending on the play of Richardson & Gholston....Worthington could be an impact kid, but I think he's still rather lean to be playing big minutes this season. I hear Barrow is a beast to block as well.

I'd LOVE to see Lenix on ST. With his ridiculous speed and nose for the ball, he could be this year's Sirjo.

CB spot up for grabs in hard-hitting OSU secondary
Mansfield native to be in the mix as freshman for Buckeyes

COLUMBUS -- Admittedly biased,

Cleveland Glenville football coach Ted Ginn Sr. knows whom he would like to see fill the starting cornerback vacancy at Ohio State.

Surprise, it's not his son, Ted Jr., even though the Heisman Trophy hopeful would be the overwhelming choice of Buckeye fans.

"I would probably say Jamario (O'Neal) ... he has the opportunity," Ginn Sr. said of the Glenville All-Am- erican and former Mansfield Senior standout. "Right now, Ted is so invol- ved with special teams and offense. Maybe down the line they can use him at cornerback in the red zone."

Ginn Jr. was recruited by the Buckeyes as a cornerback, but the 2003 USA TODAY High School Defensive Player of the Year was used on offense and special teams during his breakout freshman season.

After eight touchdowns on 55 touches, he's became such a dangerous weapon it's hard for new defensive backs coach Paul Haynes to lobby for his use on that side of the ball.

"He's a talented kid; he can do a lot of different things," Haynes said. "He could definitely help us. But with me being new, I can't go in there and bang the table and ask for No. 7 (Ginn)."

So the door is op- en for O'Neal when he reports for preseason camp this summer. Like Ginn Jr., the 6-1, 180-pound Mansfield native was a Parade All-American and played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl last January.

After playing his first two years of high school ball at Mansfield Senior -- he verbally committed to OSU as a sophomore -- O'Neal finished up at Glenville. He had 65 tackles, three interceptions and three sacks this season for the Tarblooders' state semifinal team.

"They say I'm going to have a chance to compete for a starting job and that makes me excited," O'Neal said of discussions with the Ohio State coaching staff. "I know nothing's going to be given to me. I'm going to have to work for it."

The cornerback spot opposite junior Ashton Youboty and the defensive end job vacated by NFL-bound Simon Fraser are the only openings on defense.

At one point, Ohio State considered shifting another Glenville alum, Donte Whitner, from safety to corner, but that idea has been scrapped. Getting a hard look in spring drills are redshirt freshman Shaun Lane, sophomore special teams standout Sirjo Welch and junior Mike Rob- erts, a Canadian import.

The winner of the cornerback competition will replace steady four-year starter Dustin Fox and join a starting secondary defined as much by its collisions as coverage skills.

"I remember two years ago, when (starting safety) Nate (Salley) hit a guy from Washington on the sideline," linebacker A.J. Hawk said. "He almost knocked himself out. Nate was lying on the ground and we had to pick him up. The other guy was hurt worse than him.

"You watch Nate, Donte, Tyler (Everett) all those guys, they come up and hit people. Even guys like Ashton and Sirjo, they hit you at corner. We've had a big tradition of that here. The defensive backs have always been physical guys, and I think now it's no exception."

Head coach Jim Tressel agrees.

"If I had to pick one thing where there was excellent evolution last year, I really thought it was the way our defensive backs hit people and came to the ball," Tressel said. "Sure, there were some passes completed, but there were some people stuck pretty good after they completed them. I think this group has a chance to continue that."

Which ones are you looking forward to seeing the most? For me it's Boone, Jamario and Wells, though I'm not sure Wells will be ready to go right away. Jenkins, Russell, Worthington and Wilson are going to turn some heads. By the way, when do they report?

Lawrence Wilson and Doug Worthington have a chance to make an impact at DE if they are truly special... at least as backups to rotate in. Wilson could also be an athletic TE if our current crop can't get it done.

However, my main guys I'll looking to make an impact:
- Jamario: if only b/c he'll be a special teams freak
- Amos: this kid has looked so good in man-to-man, one has to wonder if he could be a great second matchup guy along with Youboty... maybe not quite yet but soon.
- Jenkins: same idea as Amos, we are clearly loaded at CB.
- Wells: obvious one here. Even if its just against the average teams, we're gonna see some serious flashes of talent.
- Boone: obvious choice.
- Cordle: great backup C that will push Mangold, one of the best C in the country, to bring his A game every day in practice.

I agree with jwins, Worthington and Wilson are the guys that have the best chance to make an impact early. We need more pressure coming off the edge and they may be able to provide it.

Boone, O'Neal, and Wells are guys that should shine as Buckeyes, but I'm not so sure we'll see much of them the first couple of games, with the possible exception of Jam-O as a gunner.

one guy I want to see is Donald Washington... He was the MVP of the Indiana all star game and he was a stand out track athlete it'd like to see what he can bring to the table. Same thing goes for Shoenhoff/Hartline I love those two talents. Also I'm a big fan of Mo Wells anybody with his speed and size (smaller back) can scare the hell out of a defense because he's likely to be very tough to contain.

Jamario I have a feeling is going to do big things this year but everyone will be watching him.
