Game Thread (2004) Game Seven: Indiana - 10/23/04 (W, 4-3/1-3)

Smiths long ball is a hell of alot more accurate than Zwicks. Gonzales dropped a first down and there were some very catchable ball dropped.

Exactly how many long balls did we complete?

Troy played well, but I can recall at least three long balls that he missed and the receiver was open.

We keep saying "But it's Indiana". Don't Cincy, Marshall, NCST and NW suck too?
Cincy yes - we waxed them
Marshall - No, ask Georgia who struggled with them too. Three top 10 teams on the road in three weeks is pretty hard for any program - to say UM sux is dumb!
NCST - solid, solid D. Hard to judge that team as equal to Indiana!

NW- Typical NW good O, No D. Combined with at NW at night, and the most porous D tOSU has had in years equals a scoring dual. We lost. Any team with a good D beats NW!

Hey, everything else aside, it's nice to be back in the W column. One week at a time, hopefully more comes together against Penn State.

Don't really care who starts at QB next week. I tend to think that because Troy started this week, he should next week as well. The flip side is I don't believe in awarding jobs based on an injury, but no one can come away from the Indiana game saying that he did anything to lose the starting role.

I don't feel the same way about RB. I still like Lydell, still pull for the guy, but I will be very disappointed to see him (or anyone) start over Pittman next week. We're far enough into the season that I'm not worried about Tony's (or Michael's, depending on who you ask) durability for the remainder anymore, and it's very nice to see someone running out of tackles no matter who the opposition is.

Penn State's D shut Iowa down this week, but no matter how good we made the Hawkeyes look, they're in rough shape to begin with. Should be interesting to see what we do against the Lions.

Clarity/Osugrad21, or anyone ...
Would your overall analysis come to the conclusion that there was an overall more crispness to our Offensive plays? Troys' delivery was seemingly done with more authority and the O-line blocking seemed to have alot to build on in this game. The run game was alot better, not great but better. Lot of dropped balls but overall it was ok. Defense seemed more aggressive and Carpenter seemed to have picked it up with at last count 10 tackles, 1 sack, 1 int. I hate those under routes that OSU is getting beat on though. Those wide open Wr's on the opponents teams are giving me an ulser. I was concerned with the lul in effective TD drives from in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.
I'll wait until after the Penn State and MSU games to declare this offense as "coming out" though. Penn st. is terrible, but MSU is a team nobody should overlook and prepare for or they'll sneak up on you. Still alot more to build on from this game than games previous to this one where it looked like a train wreck on the offense. Maybe this will be good for Justin Zwick to step back and take a breather. I don't care which QB is in there as long as OSU wins !!
Applaud Troy and Pittman, and Gonzalez for a good effort though...

My biggest b!tch after this game would be the penalties (correctable). I think we did well overall, but we'll know a lot more after next week. Can we build off of this or was this "just Indiana"? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Well, overall I think we saw steps in the right direction. The playcalling was varied better and had a little more flavor. Pittman ran well but Indiana missing tackles everywhere contributed to that also. Today just seemed as if the team awoke energy-wise. It may have been Smith, he played well but not great...very nice for a first start though, or it could have been JT showing some guys that they are not secure in their positions. Redshirts were lifted, veterans were passed over, and a point was made.

The Bucks needed an opponent like Indiana and they maximized the opportunity.

Good point Saw31, those penealties at critical times bugged me too. I think we had a couple of key plays where OSU had good yardage (that one Pittman run) and it was called back due to holding or other silly mistakes.

Agreed osugrad21, for me the jury is still out until after we play PSU and MSU in the next few weeks, but OSU did have some things to build on and there did seem to be more of a spark this week. Hopefully the whole teams wakes up and improves even more next week.

Does anyone know that status of Kyle Mitchum ?? He was a huge O-lineman recruit last year. I know he's only a freshman, but just wondering how he is coming along since Barton is getting time on the field too.

Agreed there. I don't know if anyone else felt the same way, but when I watched last week, I wasn't seeing any real effort, energy or emotion at all from about 75% of the team, and that was worrisome given camraderie and discipline are supposed to be JT's strong suits. Have to give him credit for finally getting more of the younger guys in, and rejuvenating some of that drive we've been lacking. It was a welcome change to see guys getting worked up, jumping around and slapping each other on the back after good plays. Like grad said, we (the team, the fans, etc.) needed SOMETHING to feel good about, and we got it in this game. No one little thing, no one player can be credited (in my personal perspective, others may feel differently), but a lot of things were done less wrong (don't want to go as far as to say 'done right') in this game, and the end result was a nice one. Hopefully this carries forward into Penn State, I think that game should be a lot like this one, except they'll probably be a little less inept at tackling than Indiana was.

Rough year when a win over Indiana is so meaningful to us.

I agree. They definately showed more energy this week. We'll see if they can keep that energy level up when they get smacked in the mouth again, or if they go into a shell. I am pleased with the overall performance. Now they need to figure out a way to keep things going.

I would not say PSU is terrible. Their defense played well against Iowa and they have a good RB in Scott.

Most of their fans probably would.

--edit--

Want to add to something I said earlier, lest anyone try and turn it into something it's not. I think Troy deserves to start next week. When I said I don't care who starts, it's because for all purposes, I really don't. I think we have two players who each bring something a little different to the table. I'm much more interested in who starts at RB and the various OL positions next week. I still feel the QB issue runs very secondary to a lot of other issues that speak more directly to our recent struggles.

I think Ginn's athletic recovery of a tipped pass and the amazing dash for the endzone set the tempo of the game. We were having some success moving the ball but the team became extremely energetic after that impressive feat.
