Geez
This is ugly. I stayed away from Bucknut chats and sites, because the tide was so against what I believed. All men must sense a time for change in what they do. Last year, despite 2 embarrassing losses and many more embarrassing wins, a few began to question if what Tressel of Bollman were doing on offense was really adequate for the competition. The defense was "You can't expect to win every game." "The players aren't executing the plays." There were too many excuses, but not a facing of truth.
As each game has progressed this season, the excuses will be that the team is young. The team is not executing, the players aqre not as good as advertised.
The truth is harder. As Tressel has steeled himself against criticism of his simplistic offense. It is not about running or passing. It is about running the same plays out of the same formations. It is about defenses knowing what OSU is going to call before the OSU QB does. Is it not curious that the OL has underperformed for 4 years and Bollman has been the OL coach for 4 years? Bollman is the supposed Off. Coordinator... the offense has gotten worse each of the last three years. And outside the first 8 games of 2002, it has been a joke since Tressel became coach.
BUt, OSU could overcome all that, because Mark Dantonio was a defensive whiz and understood how to shut a team down- how to think on the run. Neither Bollman, nor Tressel have shown the ability to adjust the offense in a game. To look at what a team's weaknesses are and attack them. Well, now Dantonio has left and a never-before DC is the DC. Mark Snyder is overmatched and shows no ability to adjust. Oh, I know... the defense is replacing the stars now sitting in the NFL. They are young. Baloney!!! Watching the defense this year I see 11 players STANDING UP at the snap of the ball and looking around. This is a "read-and-react" defense. Read-and-react defenses play lots of soft zones, delayed blitzes, and are susceptible to play-action and mis-direction plays. Under Dantonio, OSU played assignment defense. Each player had an obligation and covered his job. Now, they all look around and guess.
My questions are many. WHy, when Dantonio left and it was obvious that Bo Pelini- a Buckeye and proven defensive genius- was not remotely sought out by OSU. Oh, I know- keep it within the system. Snyder was there, knew it. These were the same excuses when Harris and Hollis left that the jobs for OC were passed on to incompetents like Jacobs and Stobart. How many 3rd-and-longs is OSU getting burned on this year, because they sit in soft zones and blow the coverages? Why, when with each game it becomes clear that Zwick is lost, do we not give Smith a shot? Oh, I know, we don't want a QB controversy. Zwick is Mr. Clean cut all-American. He waqs supposed to be the stronger arm and more accurate thrower. How many lame ducks must sail 20 feet over wide open receivers or be thrown straight into the arms of defenders before we catch on that he can't handle the job right now?
Win or lose, I have stuck to my guns about this pathetic offensive show the last 6 years, the last 4 in particular. Yes, OSU won the NC, but more and more, one wonders whether CLarett was that great on his own. I don't want to think so. Good coaches learn and modify... they adjust. No one on the OSU sideline has shown the remote ability to adjust. They have shown the ability to close up, to act depserate, but not come up with a coherent gameplan. If you listen to the rest of the world without scarlet-covered earphones, you would learn that we are a laughing stock in college football.
Maybe there was a time when this was fun... the nail-biters, the glorious comebacks. But now, it just stinks. This team is being mis-managed and poorly coached. I am not advocating Tressel leave or anything, but some shake ups need to occur, both on the field and on the sidelines. Maybe these guys are young, but so are other schools (Georgia, Michigan, AUburn), but they seem much more capable of coaching offense with young players than this two-dimensional offense of OSU. One series, all run, one series, all pocket screens, one series all bombs. It is the sign of desperation. It is the sign of a system that was weak, and is now failing. Changes need to be made.
