20 Questions With Georgia Tight End Stephen Gowland
written by BuckNutty (7/1/2004)

1.) The Insiders lists you at 6-4 220 and having run a 4.59 40. Are those numbers still accurate?

SG - Yes they still are, my weight has been slumping a little bit recently down to about 215 - but I can easily be back at 220 - I hope to be at 230-235 by the time my senior season starts, most likely I'll play at around 225 though.

2.) What would you say is your biggest strength on the football field?

SG - My desire, passion for the game. I don't lose and I take that attitude every time I step onto the field. Some how, some way, my team will come out the winner. Also I bring great leadership to the field, I've been through a couple leadership classes and feel I can be an excellent leader. I stay calm in the clutch.

3.) What things, if any, do you think you need to work on to become a better player?

SG - As a player you must always have the attitude that you can become better because someone out there is always working harder. I think I'm pretty well rounded right now as a player I just need to continue pushing myself in all areas and not rest on past achievements.

4.) Is there any player in the NFL or college that you model your game after?

SG - Shannon Sharpe. He's a guy whose frame you would expect him to be a body builder - not an ounce of fat on him - but he would go around and knock bigger guys off the ball time and time again and still be able to come up with the huge catch whenever it was needed. I've always been a little bit on the lighter side when it comes to playing tight end, and my body fat is really low as well (5.6%). I pride myself in my ability to block guys who out weigh me by 40 or 50 pounds. Also I love catching the ball and no doubt Shannon did as well.

5.) A recent off the field incident has left the Buckeyes a little thin at the TE position. When looking at schools do you study depth charts?

SG - A little but probably not as much as most people.

6.) Do you play any other sports besides football?

SG - I run track(300 hurdles, 4 X100) and throw the shot and disc. I played baseball from the time I was 4 until my sophomore year at Parkview. I also play basketball at my church.

7.) What kind of things will you look for when you make your visits to different schools?

SG - A huge thing for me is the attitude of the team and coaches. I want to go to a place where everyone is 110% committed to what they are doing.

8.) Last year the Buckeyes had an NFL record 14 players drafted and many recruits mention they want to go to a school that produces a lot of NFL players. Will that be a factor in your decision?

SG - Somewhat - I'm not a big "it's all about me" guy. I would definitely rather play on a national championship team than be a first round draft pick.

9.) A number of southern recruits mention wanting to play where it's warm. Do you think you'd mind playing in cold weather?

SG - I mean to be quite honest it's football... it's a winter sport... it's supposed to be played in the cold

10.) What coach is recruiting you from Ohio State? How often do they contact you?

SG - Coach Tucker - well they can't call now but I get quite a few of the motivational letters. Not too many hand written letters recently.

11.) When someone mentions the Ohio State Buckeyes to you, what comes to mind?

SG - Fiesta Bowl. The ultimate team. No one gave them a chance - shows how awesome a game football really is and that a true team can beat anyone.

12.) When are you planning on making a visit to Columbus?

SG - Hopefully the last weekend in July

13.) Does the fact the Buckeyes are considered a run first team bother you?

SG - I blocked for a 2,000 yard rusher last year and still managed to haul in 20 catches. Tight-ends can be an awesome weapon in run first offenses.

14.) What is your favorite subject in school? Any idea what your major might be?

SG - Favorite class would have to be... weight training. Just kidding - I don't have a particular favorite. I'm thinking something to do with business could be a good major for me.

15.) Who is your favorite athlete?

SG - Jeremy Shockey - man's a beast

16.) What's your favorite website?

SG - espn.com, theinsiders.com, rivals.com anything with sports I'm on it

17.) What's your favorite movie? TV show?

SG - I like funny movies - Ben Stiller kind of things. I'm not a big TV watcher - I'd rather be out with friends doing something rather than sitting on my butt

18.) What's currently in your CD player? Who are some of your favorite artists/bands, etc.?

SG - I burn most of my CD's and they are all so random. I kinda have a thing for country being from the South and all. One of my best friends has been rubbing off on me too making me listen to all of his VanHalen and other classic rock - when it comes to music I'm all over the place. It really just has to do with what kind of mood I'm in.

19.) Speaking of music, at the end of every game the team salutes the band by singing Carmen Ohio. Are you a good singer?

SG - Haha... well actually I sang at my fifth grade graduation... puberty shortly thereafter put an end to my public singing days. Nah but I still like to belt out the occasional tune with the guys.

20.) What is one thing you'd like Buckeye fans to know about you?

SG - Buckeye fans need to know that Navy and Yellow is ugly... scUM. And also... I spent a week in the hospital this past August and it really made me appreciate the opportunity I have here and how much God has had his hand on me throughout my life. God has blessed me with an incredible ability and I plan to use it to its fullest extent.

Nutty- great interview

Stephen thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. The first part of No. 20 was my favorite.

It sounds like your hospital visit is a thing of the past and your ready for a great senior season. Best of luck to you and I hope you make it up to C-bus. If you do, I have no doubt that you will have a great experience.
