Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

Here's the thing - you run the ball with Howard twice, lets say you get 3 yards each time (and that's being generous to Oregon). Now you're at the 22 yard line and it's a 39 yard field goal.

Earlier that quarter he absolutely nailed a 40 yarder, right down the middle, at the top of the uprights....

I don't really trust this kicker from 39 even. Why can't we hit the transfer portal for a CAPABLE kicker like other schools?

Just saying Mississippi kicker made a 58 yd against LSU in 4 th qtr of tight game. Kickers are out there btw he didn’t shank 3 KO out of bounds either. To win that NC you need more than we have.
Still not convinced those were actual shanks....they looked semi-intentional like they were trying to kick to the corner in person....

Why? Our defense shouldn’t need gimmicks.
You sure about that? Aren't you one of the people on the "fire fucking eveyrone" train right now?

Ultimately, you don't eliminate anything from any scenario...if you can do something that could potentially limit another team or give yours an advantage within the rules of the game, shouldn't you at least try it?

The issue is it's the same problems showing up for 6 years now. You can't blame fans for coming to the conclusion that this is what a Ryan Day team looks like, and it's what we should expect in the future.

We don't have to win every time. We do have to win more than 1 big game in 6 years.

I’d like that, but I’ll challenge you to find a better overall coach… on all the dimensions the school wants / needs. I’m not saying that, on that one dimension you’re wrong, but holistically? Where do you go?

I don’t have a single clue.

I don’t hire or fire. I just pull for my team like hell year after year. I’m not NC or bust that’s a losing proposition.Thats the coaches and fans who should know better.

After reading all the posts pointing fingers at who is responsible for this loss, it’s pretty obvious to me.

It was a TEAM loss. Pretty hard to argue that any one individual or position group were responsible. Hell, I’d even throw in some crazy ass shit with that (was it really even intended to be an) onside kick?
They are always a TEAM loss. But we certainly had a few players / coaches who provided some extra credit in the loss. Burke and I would assume Walton for leaving him in there should shoulder some additional blame for that turd performance.

Man, lot to unpack from this one.

The defense...woof. That was the worst defensive performance in years. They just flat out got their asses beat. The DL did absolutely nothing the entire game. Denzel Burke had the worst game of his career (and he's had plenty of bad ones, probably the weirdest career for an OSU player that I can remember). The tackling was laughably bad. Just flat out god awful execution across the board. Ransom makes a nice play on the 2 point attempt and his slow ass gets caught from behind. And where are his teammates to block for him? Those 2 points would have been huge, obviously. Just a pathetic display from the defense across the board that frankly I didn't think was possible from this team especially given how good they were last year.

Ryan Day...these losses in big games are becoming way too familiar. The lack of situational awareness and clock mismanagement in this game was mindblowing. How can you not be wary of an onside kick from the 50? Why are you not calling timeouts before the 2 minute warning and just letting precious seconds go to waste? He also obviously did not know the clock would continue running after the penalty at the end. Ending that game with a timeout in your pocket is coaching malpractice. I also feel like Day overreacts to situations that have happened in the past. He heard the criticism from the lack of aggressiveness at the end of the Georgia game and because of that was way too aggressive at the end of this game. We had the ball at the 28 yard line with 40+ seconds and a timeout. How in the fuck are we continuing to only throw the ball at that point? It just doesn't make sense. He took a ton of heat for handing the ball off to Hayden for one play in that Georgia game, but that was the right thing to do! It just didn't work out, and that happens sometimes. So this time we go full air raid and guess what, we get a soft ass OPI call that essentially ended the game. Just fucking stupid shit. The guy really just can't get out of his own way in big moments and it's starting to look like this is just who he is. How he & the team respond to this is going to be huge because his job should absolutely be on the line right now as far as I'm concerned.

If there's any positive to take from this game, it's that Will Howard answered all the questions (boneheaded final play aside). He was fantastic in this game, put the team on his back and did everything to win this game. And with competent coaching, would have won. Concerns about him are gone, at least for me.

Overall, a weird fucking game. It was very Brownsy in that sense. This loss sucks right now, a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, this team still has everything in front of them and I think they can do it. I would love our chances in a rematch with Oregon on a neutral field. But Day needs to wake the fuck up and so does the defense.
Maybe we can bring back Coach Tressel for the last two minutes of each big game. That MFer had ice in his veins .... :jt:

Hi

I ducked (no pun intended) out early as I could see how things were going. IF Oregon was not in the B1G, I wouldn't care so much for a 1 pt loss on the road. But that is a huge hit. OSU has to run the table now, and do it convincingly. There is no margin of error. Day screws this up, I suggest OSU starts looking for a new HC who can win the big games
Agree with the Day needs to start winning the big games. Disagree on running the table. We could still lose another game and land in the CFP at 10-2.

You definitely don't want to risk that 2nd regular season loss. If they got to Indy without losing again and lost there I'd say we are surely in. a 2nd regular season loss is going to leave you sweating depending on other results throughout the year.
