Game Thread #2 tOSU at #3 Oregon, Sat. Oct. 12, 7:30 pm ET, NBC

I've been enjoying Buckeye football ever since 09, even through some tough loses I've never not enjoyed being a Buckeye. Winning and losing is part of life and therefore sport, but of course I post more after loses because usually there's more to dissect than with wins, and let's be honest with the amount of talent we have in the roster 8 or 9 wins are guaranteed regardless of how well or poorly we've played. Not everything is perfect when we win and we don't need to burn everything to the ground when we lose, I will admit that I've let my emotions get the best of me in past situations, but it frustrates me that with this amount of talent we get to see the same problems and errors with the team, when the difficulty slider is turned up a couple of notches.

As for the other comment, as I explained in a following post I was merely talking talent wise. Even though teams like Georgia and Bama are weaker than in previous years, they still have rosters with great talent all around, which unfortunately for us have been the type of teams that we haven't been able to consistently and convincingly beat the past 2/3 years.
Welcome to the Buckeye pride, great highs but too many lows. We sure know how to waste great opportunities.

Coach Day.

WAY too many attempts at vertical shots when the Bucks hit the 30 yard line with 35 seconds and one timeout left. You could have called in two plays, high(er) percentage throws. Hell, you could have gone back to the the QB centric running game and ground a few yards out on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down. I can't help but to call into question some of the play design and what is being fed to the QB when you're almost in winning field goal range.
Is this Day's fault or Chip Kelly's? I thought Kelly was calling the plays.

Speaking for myself I don't question the play call at the end so much, and other threads I've pushed back on it for the sake of argument, but I was in the camp that we should have stayed aggressive in the past in these situations so I can't now act like I'm disappointed we were passing instead of running.

What I do get butt hurt about is despite the referees not announcing it The coach needs to know the rules and between that and the time we lost on Howard's first play I question the clock management more than I do The play calling.

One thing that's not being discussed enough I think is we should have been going for two point conversions on the last two touchdowns if memory serves but definitely the last one.

To me it's either you don't know the rules and you don't know the analytics which is damning, or it's we have a coach who's never been a head coach and his hair is still on fire when the butthole tightens.

The season is not over and I do error to the side of Buckyle that we only have so many games to enjoy, but it is extremely disappointing still today on Monday. Like most of you, I too miss the old days from 03 on when it was Ohio guys, no NIL, no portal, etc. but as I bring my kids into the fold it's still Ohio vs The World and you should try your best to enjoy the ride, even with Knowles in charge  Christ have mercy. Go Bucks.

Great question. With Day the CEO of the team, with Chip calling the O, and Knowles calling the D, what exactly would/will he call from the sidelines? Can assume he has both of the two coordinators on his headphones, but simply put, that's their calls, no? He's delegated special teams to a mismash of asst coaches, so maybe the game clock is his responsibility, plus haranguing the refs? Actually, seems like being the 'face' of the Buckeyes, and standing on the podium or field answering the newsies questions is what the CEO does. Would actually think his job was/is to watch tape, and construct a game plan for both the O and the D before the game. Oregon out-schemed tOSU from the jump. We planned for short throws, and instead got long bombs by the QB. And the Ducks out executed the Buckeyes by a wide margin. Another thought, with the 'new' microphone from coach to QB, is this a straight shot? Or does it get filtered through Day? That might be a tad micro-managing, so I'll go with a straight shot from Chip to Will. We all gotta remember, Oregon thought we'd come out RBs a blazin', but we dinked short passes down the field for an opening TD. So we did to Oregon what Oregon did to us (long pass plays). Only they did it more often, and more successfully. Lots of blame to go around, but still, some nuggets of good there as well. Set back, certainly. Death knell, nope. Suck it up and get better. THAT's what should make the difference in keeping Day and hiring ? And cannot truly think of anyone out there who'd I'd rather have at the Buckeye helm. Go Bucks!

If you have "too many men on the field" normal 5 yard penalty.

If all 12 (or more) take part in the play, then make it a 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and reset the game clock as if it were a dead ball foul. Easy fix. (So it will never happen.)
Heard Carpenter mention that this morning and was unaware of that.

It was supposed to be 15 yards he said. That's why 12 men in the huddle is even 15 yards versus a player running off of the field when the ball is snapped is only 5 yards.

Regarding the helmet communication to the QB, I’m not sure where that’s coming from, but I know in the final 2 minutes they needed to know ahead of time that they couldn’t rely on the QB hearing anything with the noise in that stadium. I mentioned before that I saw the decibel meter listed at 127 (edit - it got to 129) on the scoreboard during those final few plays.

I’m not sure communication was much of an issue until the final 10 seconds. Oregon defended the out route by Smith well (pretty sure Muhammad knocked it away), and then there were 6 seconds left and a timeout. I wanted a slant run that could have gained 8 to 10 yards in about 4 seconds, with the receiver going down immediately (near the middle of the field) and getting a timeout that might have allowed a 45-to-47 FG attempt. When Howard took off I knew the clock would run out, but it was probably impossible to tell Howard that stuff through the helmet after the incomplete pass, without using the timeout which needed to be kept in the hope of using it with 1 second left.

I agree with those who have stated that Day should have used a timeout rather than letting the clock run down to 2 minutes.

But the biggest factor in that drive not getting points was the OPI call. Despite getting sacked on the first play, the Buckeyes were at the 28 with more than 25 seconds and a timeout left. That should have allowed them to run 3 plays to try to put the ball between the 10-and-15 yard line, get it to the middle of the field, and either spike the ball after a first down or use the timeout.

I’ve also never understood why OPI is a 15-yard penalty, like a personal foul. If it was treated the same as the receiver running out of bounds and coming back in before a catch, which is essentially like an incomplete pass, the chances with 2nd and 10 from the 28 with 20 seconds and a timeout would have still been pretty good.

Now that I can think a little more clearly on the game, on one hand it is a one point loss on the road to what I think is a good team. The ending was tragic, but that is not the end of the season at all with how the playoffs are built.

I will say this though - If we don't fix the defense, we are in for at least one more loss by the end of November. I really don't know if it is players or coaches, or both, but there is no excuse for the defense to look like that getting pretty much everyone back. Mathews should start over Burke this week but that alone does not solve things.

There is some flaw(s) in scheme that is getting us exposed and that has to be fixed above all else. Knowles better step it up because the talent is there. The offensive staff better step it up too, we are getting away with raw talent for the most part. I'll cut them some slack with the injuries to the OL, but the play calls and time management in the last minute were inexcusable to me. We set ourselves up for defeat there.

Time to move on though, lots of football left to be played.

According to ChatGPT (quicker than me reading the entire rule book or using Ctrl+f) if the referees determine a team did this intentionally to gain an advantage it is a personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct and the referees are able to reset the clock and add time back on. This is done specifically so that a team cannot take advantage of running off time in exchange for 5 yards. You're not allowed to gain an advantage this way.

Not to revert back to cynicism, but if you know the f'n rules, or even just hire someone on staff to be your Beliechick/Stallions/autistic rules guy - you might be able to alter the outcome of that game with effective communication to the officials.

Supposedly it's rule 9, section 2, article 3 but I've not looked it up myself

Edit: this situation is not specifically mentioned but in 9-2-2 I think you could apply it and 9-2-3 is a catch all that would apply from my arm chair reading
