#2 Ohio State 64, Penn State 62 (Final)

Ohio State victory comes with a clank

Thursday, February 15, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
State College, Pa.- Let's pretend Penn State's 3-pointer to win had gone in rather than off the back iron at the buzzer, that the last-place team in the Big Ten, which had been down 25 points in the first half, had beaten the No. 2 team in the country Wednesday night.
"We would feel devastated," Ohio State senior Ron Lewis said.
Mike Walker's 3-pointer, just the shot the Nittany Lions hoped to get after Lewis missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 10 seconds left, didn't go in. Walker stumbled to the opposite foul line, crouched down, his face in his hands, and fell on his back like a turtle. Lewis walked across the court holding a single finger in the air, celebrating the avoidance of potential devastation.

Buckeyes Survive Weird Weather, Weird Trip and Weird Game for Win in State College
By John Porentas
The Buckeyes capped a weird road trip with a win in weird game.
Following a trip to State College that was delayed by a day by a winter storm that brought snow, ice and frigid temperatures to the midwest No. 2 Ohio State (23-3, 11-1 Big Ten) was red hot from the field in the first half while home standing Penn State (10-14, 1-14 Big Ten) was as cold as the winter weather outside. The Nittany Lions managed a 10-6 lead at the first TV timeout, but from then on, the Buckeyes were on fire. OSU outscored Penn State 34-9 after that timeout to take what looked like an insurmountable 40-19 lead as the half ended.
OSU lead by as many as 24 early in the second half when Ron Lewis hit a three to make the score 50-26. Then the weirdness started.

Ohio State builds big lead, hangs on as last shot fails
Nittany Lions nearly overtake Buckeyes after trailing by 24

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Penn State?s Ben Luber tries to drive around Ohio State?s Mike Conley Jr. during the first half. Luber had five points and Conley six as Ohio State stayed tied with Wisconsin atop the Big Ten standings.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Heat was the last thing anyone expected to see from Penn State last night on its snowplastered tundra. Neither that nor a barnburner between the Big Ten?s firstand last-place men?s basketball teams, especially after Ohio State led by 21 points at halftime.
That was precisely what broke out, however, in the second half in Bryce Jordan Arena. At least in the Nittany Lions? end of the barn.

Didn't read the whole thread but could have Bill Walton said anymore in the time he was on the air?

Just another reminder of why I HATE Bill Walton.

Take a fucking breath man!

Help global warming by not breathing so much Co2 into the atmosphere.

No doubt, I wanted to hear what was going on with Greg and the technical foul. That was ridiculous!

I agree, I mentioned it when he was on and what made it even worse, it was during a time when we were struggling...

I can't stand to listen to him do an NBA game...

Has Walton ever spoken on TV without mentioning either: his days at UCLA, Wooden, the Grateful Dead, one of his kids' career?

He also mentioned the fact that he was the #1 overall pick in the NBA and was at the time the highest paid player in the history of professional sports. What a pretentious jerk.

While we're on the subject, I don't know why ESPN had Walton on the game anyway. His 10 minutes of diatribe entirely distracted the viewer from the game. It was almost as if at halftime the ESPN brass thought that the game was such a blowout that no one would care about the lack of color commentary, but instead everyone would be more interested in Walton's thoughts about Oden. ESPN gets a grade of F for its coverage of that game last night.

I agree with so many that we need leadership and a go-to guy to get somewhere in the tourney. I think we all pretty much feel that way. But I think what bugs me the most is the lack of defensive intesity especially by the upperclassmen. Every team has slumps and cold streaks with shooting the ball, but there's never an excuse to relax on defense. I think that's what I loved so much about last years team. Those guys never quit on D! I remember watching Foster go cold shooting the rock but on the other end of the floor that guy played his guts out on defense. This years group just seems like they lack that fire on the defensive end. Just my opinion of course.

did you ever see walton play in college? wowzers....

lots of stuff a lot of repeats if you ask me.

the ranking, i believe mili drilled on how is this team #2. thats the way it was voted. and in all reality they backed into the ranking the same way the football team backed into the #1 ranking. we havent played a real solid opponent in a month... the same way the football team beat 1 team with a winning record after the first month of the season...

settling for shots. when quick shots fall its great, when they dont you can give up points the other way or feast of offensive rebounds. thats what im seeing a lot of as the season progresses our quick shots are turning into oppurtunities on the other end of the floor.

living by the 3 and dieing by the 3. 7 of 14 then 2 of 11. i think a lot of this is shot selection. sure they went cold but we settled for average looks. when things stop falling i see it as two options, you can try and shoot out of a slump or try and get to the rim get layups, get fts. we settled, forcing a perm game rather than working inside outside we stuck with outside game. im not saying you have to force feed oden, but get him the ball and let him pass it. or as hes doubled get a swing pass and penetrate. this team has a handful of guys who can do that. and once you get in the 7 or 8 feet range dont throw up some garbage floater off balance. pull up, make another pass or continue to the rim...

slump or wall. ive said it the last 2 or 3 games. whens the slump a slump or is it the wall?

rebounding, plus 3.... id like to see that number increase greatly against a psu caliber team.

trap game. won 10 in a row vs lost 9 in a row... it had all the makings for a lax showing.

points off tos, penn state killed us in the second half with pts of tos 12 to 1. throw in points off bad looks that went the other way for points and that number is close to doubled...

0. number of second half second chance points

14 to 2. fast break points in favor of psu in the second half

12 the number of points psu's bench outscored osu bench in the second half

cook only attempted one shot in the second half after what i felt offensively was a great half, as he gave turned the ball over 3 times.

5 number of fts in the second half. which plays into my settling for shots and poor shot selection ideas listed above.

ive got so much to say, but ive hit all the things ive wanted to say in previous games.

the upsides, a w is a w. who knows how much time is being spent on prep for psu, you really have no idea how well they were scouted. likely a lot of time is being spent on putting in new sets and looks for the tourneys and for uw. with a team like this every game is a learning experience. they never quit and gritted through it and pulled out the w. i see tons of things that they can work on and and the ability to refocus themselves after a game like this.

Ramblings from a worried fan

A win is a win. I'm sorry I have read too much of that lately. I am very disappointed with this team and even some of TM's coaching. Those of you who have posted on the basketball boards know how much I love Ohio State basketball and want them to succeed big-time but the #2 team in the Country does not let 2 teams come back from 20+ deficits at halftime to make it a thriller. Now for my rambling.

For having the supposedly the top defensive center in the country, the team defense is terrible especially in transition. I do not know what it is but they don't seem to be able to get back and find their man after a missed shot. This was true during the entire 2nd half and especially in the last couple seconds when PSU missed a wide-open shot.

I have said that this team is going to live and die by the 3-point shot and it is becoming more evitable this is what is going to happen. We have a 7' center and he is not getting enough touches. I have read in the past couple days where some of us have said that if we weren't hitting our 3-point shots there were other ways to score. I did not see that last night and I have not seen that against zone defenses for the past couple months. Trust me, we are going to see plenty of zone defenses the rest of the season and into the tournament if the opposing coach has any brains.

I do not understand why Harris is still starting. If he is not hitting from the outside, he brings absolutely nothing to the table. I think he has regressed as the season has progressed. I also feel that Lewis is not bringing much to the table and has fallen in love with his 25' jump shot like last year. He never tries to find Oden and does very little penetrating. I don't know if Mata feels that he owes his seniors something or if it is too late in the season to change the starting lineup. I almost would rather see Cook/Hunter starting instead of Lewis/Harris. If they are seniors, they certainly are not bringing in the leadership to the team that I can see.

I also do not understand why TM does not put someone at the foul line (high post) against a 2-3 zone. I would love to see Cook or even Harris at the high post against a zone defense. It would be much easier to get Oden more touches that way.

I don't know if TM is trying to keep all of the players happy by spreading the minutes but if guys continue to shoot 3-pointers while they are not hitting them please set them down for a while and send them a message to at least try and penetrate or get the ball to Oden or Hunter.
I know that Coach Matta and his staff know a lot more about basketball then I will ever know or have known and forgotten. I just think there is something wrong and it is not just because of the game last night. It seems like in the past few months we have not gotten any better and that concerns me.

Well enough for my rambling, I will take all of your best shots but after last night I am deeply concerned.

No shots from me, I agree with you on shot selection and Harris. Cook is much more deserving than Harris for a starting spot. Plus cook is only getting better, I have yet to see vast improvement from Harris.

BTW, work on the font size. It's hard to read
