Yeah, I can understand the UNC selection but what I do not understand is why a couple months ago he was talking about how he wanted to help bring the Ohio State basketball program back to the place where was when his father was playing. I guess you can say that it was a 17-year-old saying something that he thought everyone wanted to hear but the kid is 17 not 12.

i guess it's easy to want to be a hometown hero when your best offer by far is yet to come.

Didn't he just receive the UNC offer? Even with all the crap around their program right now, they're still a blue-blood program with a far better recent track record than tOSU, even with the coaching change. Not gonna win many of these battles until real progress is shown on the court. Sucks, but that's just where we are right now. I do have confidence that Holtmann is the right coach to get us in a better spot, though. Said from the day he was hired, it's gonna take some time, given the state of the program he inherited.

State of the program is not going to get much better unless we start getting some recruits and quite a few guys have already made up their minds if you believe Crystal balls. I have said it before and I will say it again, patience is a virtue and if you do not start recruiting like holy hell it is going to be a while before this basketball program turns around. Quite a few others in the Big Ten already have pretty good recruiting classes going and we are pretty far behind.

Painful but understandable.
Matta spoiled us by recruiting way above OSU's paygrade, and they're sadly playing catch up with this latest Gene Bumble for too many next tier guys.

Well, he's added a few pieces already since coming on. And I think he'll do pretty well in '19 (despite this loss) as he gets more time in the seat. There's a lot of time to change those '19 crystal balls. What will ultimately sell the program is on court results. Given his track record at Butler, that will come. He won at Butler without "blue chip" recruits. His track record against RPI top-100 teams is very impressive given that his teams were typically "out-talented" by their opposition.

Show progress this year by making at least the NIT, maybe even the NCAAs and things will start to turn. Like jwins said above, Matta probably spoiled us early on by recruiting well above what tOSU probably has any business doing. But as has been discussed here, his early recruiting whales were landed in a set of unique circumstances that are no longer at play.

Anyway, this is probably moving into "off topic" territory for Francis' thread. Bottom-line, while this is disappointing, I still think long-term we're gonna be just fine.

I don't necessarily disagree but Holtmann has run a lot of three-guard line-ups in his career to date. I watched his seminar sessions with the USA camp and what really stuck out to me is that his principles on both offense and defense really require at least two guards on the court at all times. This coming season we have two scholarship guards, period (unless you count Dakich). Then both Dakich and Kam are gone before 2018-2019.

To me, Watson and Jallow are both 3/2 type of guys, and the less Jallow is at SG, the better. In order for Holtmann to do what he wants to do, he really needs to land a couple quality guards in the 2018 class, preferably both with capability of playing the point. With no Francis coming in 2019, we can't afford to delay the backcourt build. We need real talent there, ASAP.

This sucks, no way around it. Wish him luck I suppose. But kind of interesting that the perception of OSU basketball seems to be more positive outside the state of Ohio right now. Holtmann is doing a great job overall recruiting so far, but it is clear how much ground we have lost in Ohio recently. Going to take some a little bit to turn that around...and while it hurts to see guys like this leave, I think we would be crazy to not acknowledge that there was no way anyone could turn this trend around immediately.

UNC Commitment Jeremiah Francis Suffers Setback

Turns out, Jeremiah Francis knew his body well. On Tuesday morning, Francis underwent microfracture surgery in Chapel Hill, he confirmed to Inside Carolina. The surgery was performed by Dr. Alexander Creighton, chief of orthopaedic sports medicine at UNC Health Care.

Jeremiah Francis does not plan to enroll at North Carolina early, instead returning to Pickerington (Ohio) Central and experiencing his senior year of high school in his hometown. He's expected to be fully recovered in six-to-nine months, meaning his high school career is over.

"I just can't wait to get healthy, get here and play hard for UNC," Jeremiah Francis said. "I see all of this as a blessing."
