Glens Falls' Joseph Girard Section II's leading scorer
Before a packed gym in Schuylerville, Joseph Girard III became the all-time leading scorer in Section II boys' basketball on Thursday.

Girard set the new standard with a free throw early in the fourth quarter. The Indians forward passed Kobe Lufkin of Argyle who held the previous mark of 2,682 points, set last year.

Girard was subdued after setting the record with the first of two free throws. After he sank the second, the game was stopped and Girard was congratulated by an opposing player before heading over to the Glens Falls bench to receive congratulations from his teammates.

Girard got rolling early as he sank four 3-pointers in the first quarter and was up to 16 points after eight minutes. He had 25 points by halftime.

This guy goes to the same H.S. I went to in upstate NY. Smallish school, and the competition is not elite. The guy can shoot like nobody's business. His uncle is the basketball coach and the offense is designed for Girard to take just about every shot. His passing and defense are largely untested. Could possibly be a Jimmer Fredette-caliber player (who, incidentally, went to the same high school).

Actually, don't. The definition of a one-trick pony at any level beyond Mountain West. Saw him in his brief stay in the NBA. A boy among men.

Look, I'm not at all critical of HoItmann for recruiting this young man. Just don't think a Fredette comparo is a very strong basis for enthusiasm.

I think you are underselling Fredette. He is fairly one-dimensional, and not an NBA caliber player (although he is tearing it up in China right now), but he would have been a good college player and an effective scorer in any conference. I suspect most college coaches would be happy to take Girard if they thought he would turn out similar to Fredette. At any rate, Girard has outscored Fredette in high school by 600 points so far, and he's only a junior.

Girard's father was a good player, and a prolific shooter, back in the day at the local Catholic high school. Girard is also a QB and 2-way starter in football (again, smallish school, not elite competition), and I think has an offer for football from Tulane.

Holtmann has picked up on this recruitment where Matta and Greg Paulus left off. Some have compared Girard to Paulus, but aside from the upstate NY quarterback/basketball angle, I don't see that as much.

Perhaps you need to look at his 247 Profile and see what other colleges and shown an interest in this "young man" before you do your evaluation :lol:

I always felt like players like this should go to a Rutgers, Penn State or Rhode Island-level of school and develop their game at scoring in vast quantities more than playing at traditional powers, but that's just me. Seems like a guy like him would be happier averaging 25 than playing at a bluer-blood, but I could be wrong.

I respect your opinion but certainly do not understand it. I do not know how a pretty good basketball player could develop himself more in college by going to a lesser program then one of the blue bloods (Ohio State included). I think if coaches felt the same way as you, Joe would certainly not have all the college offers and interests which he has.

When you average 50 points a game in high school, you are accustomed to playing a certain style. I admit I could be wrong, but you just come off as needlessly selfish when that's how you go about the game. 30+ is fine. Occasionally going for 50 or 60, sure. Averaging 50? I don't know what we're dealing with at that point. That's where I'm coming from.

I see his team averages about 85 a game, so maybe I'm off, maybe plenty of other guys get involved. The coaches see what anyone can see. He can fill it up. Where would he be the best fit, though? Is he going to go to Ann Arbor (his current leader) and shoot 20 times a game? He could somewhere else. I'm talking about fit and personality, here, that's all.

You are right in that his high school offense is centered on him, and his teammates don't have much to do with it. He gets the ball, works for his shot, scores, next possession. Think Wally World at Miami in '98, but even moreso. He'll have to adjust to a different philosophy in college almost regardless of where he goes.

The thing is, and I'm not saying Gerard will be as good as Szczerbiak - I strongly doubt he will - Wally World would have kicked ass at OSU.

I am sure that both of you saw John Diebler play in high school and it is not much different than what both of you describe. @OhioState001 Mentioned his name in a post above.
