'19 NY G Joe Girard (Syracuse Verbal)

a 6'1" guard whose own high school coach admits he has concerns about girard's point guard and defensive abilities at the next level. obviously, the blue chip offers indicate value, but i'm not so sure about a non-pg shortish guard with defensive question marks whose usage stats project to be sky high. if he's the next jimmer fredette, then perhaps he's better suited at a program that is fine with him shooting 15+ per game while not also being a playmaker for others. fredette averaged about 12, 15, and 21 shots his final 3 seasons. in comparison, kbd is averaging 15 this season.

having said all of that, if ho1tmann wants him, i want him. we're not getting him, though.

As mentioned above, my understanding is that Matta and Paulus began Girard's recruitment to OSU. And I agree with Buckguy that he's probably not headed to OSU, and may not be a good fit. But 50 ppg is going to be enticing to a lot of people, even given how hard it is to predict the output of a guy who is playing at a non-elite high school level.

There was a guy named Greg Koubek who played high school ball in the late '80's at Shenandoah High School, just outside of Albany NY, and about 35 minutes away from where Joe Girard plays now. Shenandoah H.S. is a good bit bigger than Glens Falls H.S. Koubek was a great high school player in upstate NY, in a bigger league, and he took a scholarship to Duke. Never really made an impact there, and I don't think it was much of a surprise in retrospect, because he didn't have the size or speed to distinguish himself at that level. The point being, Duke takes flyers on guys, too. Which isn't to say Girard won't make an impact at the next level, but the Duke offer is certainly not some kind of strong evidence that he will.

watching the tbt game today reminded me how much girard is not jimmer fredette. not even close. jimmer's game is (and was) much more than just quick, deep threes.

i don't think it's a surprise that girard's recruitment has gone quiet. despite the availability at guard, ttun has pretty much dropped all interest in him. duke, too. seems like cuse is the favorite, but that system is such an odd fit for a 6'1" non-point guard whose defensive abilities are suspect. as stated before, i think he'd be much better off at a program like penn state or bc.

going to watch this guy's career with interest. put me down as someone who thinks that if girard goes to syracuse, he'll transfer by year 3. if he goes to bc or psu, though, he'll flourish. or at least have a chance to flourish, relatively speaking. kid's made for a mid-major program.

Of less interest now, but Girard was QB of the team that won the NY Class B state football championship last week. Second state championship in the last three years, with Girard starting at QB and DB on both teams.

A quick update on Joe Girard, just because he goes to my HS and despite the fact that he's probably no longer of interest to anyone on this board other than BN27.

In his senior year, the guy won the NYS class B HS football championship as quarterback of his team, and won the NYS class B public high school basketball championship as, by far, the top player on his team.

Probably most impressively, his team won the "Federation" state basketball championship, which includes private schools. To win that, they had to go against private schools from NYC that recruit players and have serious athletes. Going against seriously talented opponents in the Federation tournament, he still put up 42 in the championship game, when the opponent was focused entirely on him, and showed impressive ball-handling ability to create shots for himself. After seeing him go against some pretty high-end opposition, I think this guy has a chance to be a significant contributor at Syracuse.

This isn't an "I told you so", because I'm a little surprised by it, too. But the guy's had a pretty damn good freshman year.
