#17 Ohio State 69 ,#9 Illinois 53 (Final)

Unbelievable win for the Bucks today. Jamar Butler was..... just cant find words to describe how great its been watching this guy mature this season! Je'kel Foster I think could make 3's with his eyes closed sometimes. Thad Matta's preparation has been nothing but beautiful to watch all season long and this team continues to get better and better by the game. Anyone else disappointed with the crowd noise today? On television it looked like we were sold out but only had a couple of brief moments of actual noise.
Bad mic placement. The crowd looked like it was going nuts, you just couldn't hear it on TV.

Game recap from SI.com

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketball/ncaa/men/recaps/2006/02/12/34831_recap.html

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - It didn't take any late drama this time.

Jamar Butler scored 22 points, Terence Dials had 19 and 15 rebounds and Je'Kel Foster 18 points to lead No. 19 Ohio State to a 69-53 victory over No. 10 Illinois on Sunday.

A year after ruining top-ranked Illinois' perfect, 29-0 season on Matt Sylvester 's 3-pointer with 5.1 seconds left, the Buckeyes relied on their outside marksmanship and Dials' muscle inside to win their fourth game in a row and remain in a virtual tie for first place in the Big Ten.

The Buckeyes (18-3, 7-3) hit 13-of-23 3-pointers three days after making 15-of-24 in a victory at No. 22 Michigan. It was the first time in five years Ohio State had beaten two ranked opponents in the same week.

Dee Brown scored 12 points to lead Illinois (20-4, 6-4) but was stymied all day by Ohio State's suffocating pressure. James Augustine added 11 points - all in the first half - and 13 rebounds.

In a matchup of the Big Ten's top offensive (Ohio State) and defensive (Illinois) teams, the Buckeyes excelled at both ends. The Illini shot only 37 percent from the field and, despite a height advantage, were outrebounded 36-32.

After building an 11-point lead at the half, the Buckeyes didn't vary from their approach in the opening minutes of the second half. Foster stole the ball on Illinois' first possession by diving over the Illini bench and into the first row of fans, the ball going to Butler who pulled up to hit a 3 with two defenders between him and the basket and no teammate on his half of the court.

The next time Ohio State had the ball, Butler hit another.

The Buckeyes led 53-32 after Ron Lewis ' 3 at the 13:40 mark, making the Buckeyes 12-of-17 on 3s. But Illinois began to make headway with freshman Chester Frazier dogging Foster and frustrating him with his physical play.

Frazier hit two foul shots with 9:46 left to cap a 12-0 run - Brown scored five points, Frazier four and Rich McBride three - that cut the lead to 53-44 and quieted a raucous, capacity crowd.

Ohio State, dormant on offense for more than 4 minutes, responded with a 10-0 run that ended with Foster hitting a fallaway 3 from the right corner for a 16-point lead with 7 1/2 minutes left.

The Illini continued to attack but never could find a crack in the Buckeyes' defense, with Butler shadowing Brown wherever he went. Brown hit just 5-of-13 field-goal attempts.

Ohio State is tied with Iowa, each team with three losses in Big Ten play, although the Hawkeyes have played one more game.

The Buckeyes improved to 9-0 when they hit at least eight shots behind the arc. They did that by halftime, leading 37-26 at the break.

In the first half, Foster hit all five of his shots behind the arc for 15 points. Butler made both of his for the Buckeyes, who were 8-of-12. When the Illini did match up with Ohio State's perimeter shooters, the ball went into Dials, who had sub-par efforts in three of his last five games. He had 13 points and seven rebounds to balance out Augustine's 11 points and six boards.

The Buckeyes led 31-16 after Foster and Butler each hit back-to-back 3s.

What I liked:
-Butler and Foster playing tenacious defense against their guards
-The shooting from everyone but Syl
-Dials going strong to the hoop
-(Almost forgot) REBOUNDING. We out-rebounded a taller team, something we have struggled to do all season

What i didn't like:
-Syl had a bad game today. Bad shooting and bad decision making. I wanted to throttle him when he shot the three with two minutes to go in the game.
-That's just about it :)

I think Jamar might have played the best game of his career tonight. Not only did he shoot the ball beautifully but he also shut down the best point guard in the Big Ten. Anyone thinking Butler will not start for the Buckeyes next year is totally nuts. Remember this kid was Mr. Ohio two years ago.

Great time for Foster to be out of the slump as well eh? :)

Bruce Weber is a classy individual. Did anyone else see him walking to our bench with almost 15 seconds to go in the game?

Next game: Wed. at Wisconsin. It's going to be a tough one as I can't remember the last time we won there. Great game Bucks

Butler is certainly showing how good he really is here lately. Clark Kellog was all over him in the Michigan State game, saying how good he really was and how he needed to assert himself more in the games. Looks like he starting to do that.

Bruce Weber is a classy individual.

Agreed. As is often the case, Illinois actually benifitted from Bill Self stepping down as head coach.

great game... great D... great 3 point display...

if this team keeps it's momentum and fire- which i strongly suspect will happen- it will make a DEEP run into the NCAA tourney... before the scUM game, i was thinking 4 seed, but now, i'm thinking 3, or even 2...

look out, College Hoops world! Thad Matta and the Buckeyes are about to make some BIG waves!

1. Jamar Butler has established himself as one of the premier point guards in the Big Ten. Another "wow" performance shows me that he is becoming a big game player and much more consistent.

2. What is going on with Sylvester? I have come to accept the fact that he will force shots. That's part of his game, and he hits the big one obviously from time to time. But I'm getting sick of him firing up shots with under 2 minutes left when we have a big lead. It's not as if this isn't something Matta probably hasn't addressed with him. He has no self awareness of his weaknesses.

3. Rebounding. In the first half, it just looked like the Buckeyes wanted it more on the boards. Illinois came out flat, but Dials and Sullinger really attacked the glass. That was important.

4. Lewis was invisible today. It wasn't as if we needed him, but there times in the second half where I was waiting for him to take the ball to the basket and make a big play. It was surprising to me that this didn't happen.

5. Foster has been absolutely amazing from behind the arc. But the freshman really frustrated him in the second half when Butler was out. That really showed me how important Jamar is to this team as the sole point guard on the roster.

Jamar Butler is amazing. He makes the whole team better. Foster would not get the 3-point looks he does and have the type of game he does without Butler out there. Dials was a force all game, and that also created a lot of open looks. It's obvious that when we get an open three, we are going to hit it more times than not. We caught on fire during the right week. I felt this was the toughest week we had on our schedule so far, and we nailed it. Our biggest road game of the year followed by our biggest home game of the year...and we win them both.

Can JJ Sullinger play or what? He's got a will to make plays out there that i've never seen before.

I know Sylvester is a hot topic amoung Buckeye fans...but I just don't feel like he's where he should be. He's too inconsistant. But we need him anyway because of what he potentially can bring to the table. We have nobody else that fills the 4 spot quite like him. He's a Buckeye...I like him, but it's hard for me to not think about how good this team would be if we had a really solid 4 guy.

If we take care of the ball, shoot, and rebound like we did today the rest of the year...we are going to be VERY VERY VERY hard to beat. And we played well down the stretch...you knew Illnois would make a comeback, they aren't a top 10 team for nothing...and we took their best shot, and then pulled away again.

That's Thad Matta coming through right there...getting this team to play 60 minutes now. We are finally playing 60 minutes guys...and this Ohio State team can play with anybody when they do that.
