Who is Carlton Bragg?
That was the question many here at Hoop Group?s Future All-American Camp on the campus of Albright College in Reading, Pa. were asking themselves when camp started.
By the end of the camp?s second day, those in attendance no longer had that question.
Bragg, a rising sophomore from Villa Angela-St. Joseph (VASJ) High School in Cleveland, stands 6-foot-8. But it was more than his size that answered the question.
It was his play.
Bragg took over the game in the post and was even able to nail several mid-range jumpers to keep the defense honest.
?He was clearly our MVP today,? said Kevin Hargrove, Bragg?s team coach here at camp. ?He can get up and down the floor real well. He can also move well along the baseline.?
This is typical story for Bragg, who only started playing competitive basketball three years ago when a growth spurt keyed his decision to focus on the sport over baseball.
?I was a pitcher and a first baseman,? Bragg said. ?I really liked playing baseball. But the last few years I decided to focus on basketball. This year I hope to play baseball again. I really enjoy playing more than one sport.?
Since his basketball experience had been limited, he started his freshman season at VASJ on the junior varsity. In his first game he hit the game-winning shot. He was quickly moved up to varsity.
The move paid off for the then-freshman, as several college coaches were keeping tabs on VASJ?s DeMonte Flannigan (6-8/ Class of 2013).
?Several (college) coaches have talked to me because they were there to watch DeMonte,? Bragg said. ?I want to play high-level college ball but I still need to work on every aspect of my game. That?s one reason I came here (Hoop Group Future All-American Camp).?
And when he did arrive, the eyes were again initially on other players, specifically Marcus Derrickson (Paul VI, Va./ Class of 2015) and Thomas Bryant (Bishop Kearney, N.Y./ Class of 2015), both ranked among the top 10 in several early-watch rankings of 2015 players.
?I did a lot of reading about these (Hoop Group) camps,? Bragg said. ?I did my research and I decided to come here to get more exposure and improve my game.?
To that end Bragg realizes that improving as a basketball player is about more than playing games.
He goes to a personal trainer every day from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and off the court instruction is one reason he chose to come to Reading.
?Other camps just play game after game,? Bragg said. ?Here I saw they have instructions, lectures and drills. I really enjoyed the film session also, I?ve never had the game broken down like that.?
Studying and hard work off the court is nothing new for Bragg. In addition his dream of playing on the Division I level, he maintains a 3.0 grade point average and intends to major in Sport Management in college.
On the court, despite the attention he has already received, Bragg realizes that he still has a lot of work to do.
?I do feel I have a good elbow jumper and some post moves but I know I have to work on everything to get to the next level,? said Bragg.
It is that type of dedication and work ethic which have garnered praise in the early days of camp.
?He plays with a lot of passion,? said Hargrove, a former assistant coach at Sidwell Friends School (D.C.). ?This kid works hard. He could be a sleeper. Keep your eye on him.?
Now you know who Carlton Bragg is. ?@pfebbraro

High school basketball notes: VASJ's Carlton Bragg excited for Columbus stage

@NHPreps

Carlton Bragg is excited to play at Value City Arena this weekend. VASJ's 6-foot-9 sophomore forward also said he's a bit nervous.

Whether that's because he will be playing with his teammates for a Division IV state championship, or because he'll be playing in front of a slew of Ohio State fans, is up for debate.

It's probably a little bit of both.

Bragg is one of the top sophomore recruits in the country. One scouting service has him ranked as the 23rd-best 10th-grader in the United States.

His list of suitors is a long one. He lists Ohio State, Illinois, Depaul, Missouri, West Virginia, Texas, Georgetown, Cleveland State and Dayton among the schools which have offered him a scholarship. Many others, including tradition-rich Kentucky and Kansas, are also hot on the trail.

"This is going to be my first time at Ohio State," said Bragg of this weekend's final four. "I definitely don't want to lose a scholarship offer. I want to do my best, work hard, play well and get a few wins."

Bragg said he doesn't have a favorite among his suitors.

"I just want to stay humble," he said.

VASJ won their 5th state title and first in 18 years

IMG_9852_web.JPG

Bragg had 23 in the state F4 Game before the title game, had a rough game in the title game going 4-14 but still put up 15 points 12 rebounds and 5 blocks and 4 assist

its really hard to compare Bragg to anybody realistically.

the kid is so tall and long at 6'9 with a 7'3 wingspan and he's got rubber bands for legs (ive seen him touch the top of the white box in pre-game warmups and thats as a 15/16 year old) if he works on his handle he'll easilly be the most talented player in the class, maybe not ranked #1 by websites but leave no doubt you wont find a more talented kid.

alot of teams went zone on VASJ while Bragg the tallest on the team played at the 3/4 spot more then the 5 because he can shoot, 45% from 3 point land on 2 attempts per game to be exact and at one point was 53%.

if i had to compare him to anybody it would probably be Amare Stoudimare, someone who's quick/athletic and can beat you off the dribble or drain a basket in your face vs other 4's but probably not a good enough ball handler (yet) to be a 3.

if he works on getting stronger and getting better on the dribble he's going to get offers from everyone in the country, Louisville, Indiana and Kansas have all been at the school to visit him multiple times this year along with Ohio State, Texas, Georgetown, Florida, Kentucky and Syracuse

Bragg has only been playing organized basketball for 2 years and is already a nationally ranked top 25 player for his class, as a sophmore Bragg is ahead of Kellogg as a shooter and more athletic. i guarentee if Bragg had been playing organized basketball for the majority of his life like Kellogg was a soph he would be widley considered a top 5 national kid.

theres a reason the very first time he got to showcase his talents on a national stage, people who attended the events started to drool over his potential and what he showed.
You ever see Clark Kellogg play in person... high school, college, professionally... Plus, I was talking about the surrounding casts. Kellogg had to carry St. Joseph's on his back to the state title game.

I saw Kellogg play in HS.. and he was truly outrageous... then had the pleasure of watching him on the tube in college and pros.. smooth

I would love to see Bragg follow in those footsteps... and when I saw the clip below.. he looks much bigger than 200... I'm not sure if I want him at forward, tight end, or offensive tackle... beast... looks very physical... and to think he has two more years in HIGH SCHOOL !!!

Looked at the analysts reviews of Bragg... and every one is off the charts.. since my HS (Hoban) used to play VASJ in everything for years.. I am ecstatic they aren't facing this kid this year... and hope that continues at least until 2015-2016 (when Bragg is gone)

We could only be so lucky to have him wear tOSU jersey
