Mike is an absolute nightmare to defend. He is probably not a burner but he is plenty fast and agile and smart in the way he uses his body to give himself an edge. He runs great routs and he would be an QB best friend. This guy is truly a threat on every down, but he is a third down dream for an Offensive coordinator. He is also a great asset to bail you out from deep near your end zone when in trouble, just lob it out there and he will bring it home. I would be very excited to have him on this team with the rest of the playmakers, and that in itself would make him more dangerous because he would most likely end up mismatched.

Football: Southern wide receiver Mike Gesicki faces tough college choice

STAFFORD TOWNSHIP - Mike Gesicki walked through the tunnel onto the University of Wisconsin football field this summer.

He watched film with high-profile college coaches such as Urban Meyer of Ohio State and Bill O'Brien of Penn State. Gesicki even met Duke men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Gesicki also tried on several college football jerseys.

Now all he has to do is pick one.

The Southern Regional High School receiver begins his senior season tonight as one of New Jersey top college prospects. Southern hosts Freehold Township at 6:30 p.m.

Twenty-two Football Bowl Subdivision colleges - including Ohio State, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Penn State, Miami (Fla.) and Florida State - have offered the 6-foot-6, 215-pound Gesicki a scholarship and the meetings with coaches and touring of college campuses and stadiums is all part of the recruiting process.

"It's been hectic, but it's probably one of the best hectic situations I ever had to deal with," Gesicki said. "I've been blessed to be put in this situation and have the ability to live my dream out."

Gesicki is a dream recruit for multiple colleges. He said he expects to make his decision next month. He is considering a number of factors, including academics, coaches, atmosphere and how often his family can watch him play.

"I'm personally not ready to make the decision," Gesicki said last week. "Every single day I switch back and forth. I say, 'I want to go here. I want to go there.' I'm narrowing it down. College is not just a four-year decision. It's a 40-year decision."

It has become increasingly rare in this era of specialization to see an athlete do what Southern Regional senior Mike Gesicki does.

Gesicki is a three-sport athlete and takes great pride in it.

“Growing up, I was just kind of surrounded with sports,” said Gesicki, on a late-August afternoon on the Asbury Park boardwalk. “My parents and my family always encouraged me to try different things and be a part of different programs.

“Growing up, I played just basketball. Then, I got into basketball and football. When I got to middle school, I did basketball, football and track. I ended up breaking like a county record in the hurdles and the high jump. But, I didn’t like track too much. I kind of like playing in front of a lot of people. I wasn’t getting that in track so I switched over to volleyball in high school.”

Mike Gesicki, the Garden State's top tight end prospect, will visit High Point Solutions Stadium for the Scarlet Knights' battle against the Arkansas Razorbacks, Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The 6-6, 240-pound Southern Regional (Manahawkin, N.J.) standout maintains he will make his collegiate selection in October, although he has yet to nail down a date.

Gesicki claims Rutgers, Miami (Fla.), Florida State, Penn State, Wisconsin and Ohio State as his top six institutions. And one component of his final decision, he says, will be the different magnitude of game day atmospheres he expects he'll experience over the next few weeks.

"I'm gonna go to games, and I think the last game I have set up is in the middle of October. So after I get all the experiences going to games, I think I'm gonna get it all out," Gesicki told NJ.com on July 31.

Thursday, Gesicki released to NJ.com the list of games he will be attending before making his decision.

"This weekend at Rutgers will be my first one," said Gesicki.

And following Rutgers' Arkansas clash, Gesicki says he will attend Wisconsin at Ohio State on Sept. 28 and Michigan at Penn State on Oct. 12. So, his decision will likely be made soon after the Penn State visit.

Mike Gesicki, the Southern Regional (Manahawkin, N.J.) tight end, has been one of Rutgers' top targets for a long time, now. With the 6-6, 240-pounder closing in on a decision, the Scarlet Knights appear positioned better than originally thought. Gesicki had a lot of positive things to say about the Rutgers program following this past weekend's visit to campus for Rutgers' dual against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Check it out!

TH: What did you think about the Rutgers-Arkansas battle, Mike?

MG: The game was great! I was there with my two best friends and they loved it just as much as I did. Some atmosphere during that fourth quarter. RU can compete and beat anyone. And by the way, coach Prince is a dude!

TH: How did you feel Rutgers utilized their tight ends in the game?

1. I think Mike is really underrated by the recruiting services. He has a little bit of Rob Gronkowski to his game. Physical, tough and smooth. Seems to be a real top notch competitor.

2. In part because of what his personality seems to be as a competitor, I think he ends up a Buckeye. No offense to Rutgers. They seem like they are legitimately on the upswing and could end up pretty quickly rising to the MSU or Wisconsin level. But OSU is simply on a different level and is the only team in the Midwest/Northeast currently capable of competing on the highest level nationally. I really believe that afte seeing the atmosphere at the Shoe tonight and talking to Urban about his role in the offense, he ends up committing here in the next week or so.

Penn State's sellout crowd for tomorrow night's clash with No. 18 Michigan will include some of the Nittany Lions' most valued recruiting targets.

Steve Wiltfong of 247sports.com shares the whole list, but two names deserve separate mention: five-star defensive tackle Thomas Holley and four-star tight end Mike Gesicki.

Best overall tide end 4 star recruit on 247. 247 composite (which includes ESPN, Rivals, Scout, etc) indicates that he is the 10th best tide end. Looks like his numbers this season have really impressed the scouts.
