Crean offers scholarship to Tech freshman
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: August 4, 2010

Tech's Trey Lyles hasn't yet started his freshman year of high school, but he has picked up a scholarship offer from Indiana coach Tom Crean.

Lyles' father, Tom Lyles, said Crean made an impression by flying to Orlando, Fla., on the last day of the first evaluation period in July to see his son play in the AAU Nationals.

"That showed a lot," Tom Lyles said. "It shows they are really pursuing the young man. It was a class act for him to be there."

Crean and Purdue coach Matt Painter watched the 6-8 Lyles play last year as an eighth-grader at Decatur Middle School. His summer Spiece team took third at the national tournament in Orlando.

Tom Lyles said several other schools are showing "major interest," including Illinois, Kansas, Ohio State and Notre Dame, as well as Florida and Georgetown.

Wonder how big of a sneaker he will be wearing when he is a senior analyst that how tall he will be at that time.

The offering of scholarships to guys when they are in the eighth-grader or when they are freshman needs to be put to a stop. I might even include offers to sophomores. I think they just can lead to bad situations and can't screw a kids head on the wrong way.

Scout ?14: Trey Lyles, 6?8″ small forward; Indianapolis (Tech)
September 23, 2010 By JimR

Lyles has that ?wow? factor to his game because not only is he skilled, he?s really skilled as a 6?8″ freshman. Immediately, comparisons turn to DeShaun Thomas. They are about the same size at that age, and it?s quite clear they are both not going to be pure post players, projected more as wings or combo forwards.

Relative to Thomas at a comparable age, Lyles is more fluid, a little more sure with the ball. He?s not as physical. All of that is directly related to Lyles having more talent around him at a younger age, especially on their summer teams. Lyles? shot mechanics are further along, and while he isn?t as athletic at a comparable age than Thomas was, he?s still a very good athlete and Thomas was more physically mature at a comparable age.

There to me is where the differences start to show. Lyles looks to still have some growing to do, and if he gets into the 6?9″-6?10″ area, where he can be a combo forward with the height and length (i.e. the measurables) that often exceed those at even the high major level?time will tell.

Ferrell, Lyles will visit Bloomington this weekend
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | September 22nd, 2010

Two of the top high-major prospects in the state will be on campus this weekend as both 2012 Park Tudor point guard Kevin ?Yogi? Ferrell and 2014 Indianapolis Tech forward Trey Lyles will take unofficial visits to Indiana.

Ferrell (pictured) has taken several trips to Bloomington in recent months and will do so again this weekend, according to Kyle Neddenriep of The Indianapolis Star.

The 6-10, 210-pound Lyles, a versatile forward who picked up an offer from Indiana in early August, will visit on Sunday, according to his father, Tom.

The Tech freshman is considered one of the top 25 prospects nationally by The Hoop Scoop.

Tech freshman Lyles wastes little time committing to IU
On an unofficial visit, he joins Blackmon in Class of 2014

Trey Lyles hasn't yet played a high school basketball game but already has set his college plans.

The 6-9 Tech freshman committed to Indiana University and coach Tom Crean on Sunday night while on an unofficial visit to the Bloomington campus.

"I feel like this is the best situation for me," Lyles said. "Coach Crean is a family coach. He recruited not just me, but my whole family. That's what I liked about him and IU."

Top-10 forward Trey Lyles decommits from Indiana

Trey Lyles originally committed to Indiana in September 2010 ? when he was just beginning his freshman year of high school.Nearly two years later, Lyles is back on the market.
?Trey Lyles has opened his recruitment,? Jason Delaney, Lyles' high school coach, tweeted. ?He loves IU & it is still #1 but he would like to have something to compare it to.?
Lyles, a 6-foot-9 power forward from Arsenal Tech (Ind.), is currently ranked No. 9 in CBSSports.com's Top 50 for 2014. He is one of the most skilled offensive players in the country, with the ability to knock down shots from the perimeter or take defenders off the dribble and finish at the rim.
It's unclear which schools will now get involved with Lyles, as he committed so early in the process. With that said, such a talented player will undoubtedly garner plenty of attention from the best of the best.
With Lyles no longer in the fold, James Blackmon is the lone Indiana commit in the class of 2014.

Just passing along what I have heard...

Rumor is that Cal and Matta were in his ears about Nike. FYI IU is an ADIDAS school.

If you don't think Nike and ADIDAS fight for future shoe deals factors into recruiting you are mistaken...

Jeff Goodman said it was UK and Syracuse that were recruiting him prior to the decommit, but I also read that the shoe situation at IU (Adidas), and the fact that he plays for a Nike AAU team, had something to do with the decommit.

I understand what you fellows are hearing, but the idea of a recruit decommitting because the school has the wrong shoe contract is just not believable. If he wants to wear Nike when he gets there, there are plenty of ways to make that happen.

What? You don't remember how Malik Hairston was going to "Carmelo-ize" Oregon and get that big Nike endorsement? Like it or not, and regardless of whether it actually happens, some of the top college basketball recruits are influenced by potential endorsements from the shoe companies.

How about the situation with Shabazz Muhammad and Adidas?
