'14 IN F Trey Lyles (Kentucky Signee)

Malik was all but committed to OSU when he took a visit to little Eugene, Oregon. He met with Phil Knight while out there and I believe Malik's father was quoted as saying that "the business opportunities in Oregon after basketball were very appealing". Basically, Knight told him Malik could get a job at Nike after his playing days in Eugene.

What? You don't remember how Malik Hairston was going to "Carmelo-ize" Oregon and get that big Nike endorsement? Like it or not, and regardless of whether it actually happens, some of the top college basketball recruits are influenced by potential endorsements from the shoe companies.

How about the situation with Shabazz Muhammad and Adidas?

I didn't say that shoe companies didn't play a role in selecting a school; obviously they do. I was talking about decommitting from a school a player had selected. Entirely different situation.

Yeah, I think I see what you're saying. If the shoe company was a big influence, why commit to a school with the wrong shoe company to start with and then later change your mind because of that? Maybe Nike did some things for him/his family in the interim - who knows. But there is also some talk that he decommitted because he was practically the only top player in his class who was committed, which cut down on the attention he got from coaches, and Lyles wanted to be recruited like everybody else in his class.
