Small forward
Troy, Michigan
Ht:6'5"
Wt:200 lbs
Shooting:Good
Rebounding:biggrin:eveloping
Handle:Good
Passing:Good
Strength:biggrin:eveloping
Class:2013 (High School)

Strengths:
Young is a very expolsive athlete. He has the ability to play above the rim. James has a strong body that allows him to shred the defense and get to the rim. He is strong right handed on his drive. He is a streaky shooter with range to 20 feet. Young is an able rebounder with his strong body and athletic ability. He has the ability to take over games offensively and has a solid skill package.

Weaknesses:
James needs to be more consistent with his effort. He has the ability to dominate games in his age group at will but often is too passive. He needs to continue to improve his skills. Right now his strength and athletic ability are generally too much for his opponent but that can change as players get older, bigger and stronger. Young has the physical ability to be a top 20 player in his class.

Bottom Line:
James Young is one of the better physical prospects in the class. He has high level athletic ability and solid skill. As he continues to mature and improve the sky is the limit for his potential.

Talented 2013 Trio Discuss Recruitment
by Alex Schwartz

James Young, Moses Kingsley and Jordan Bell are already fairly well-known despite having yet to even begin their junior years of high school. Young was ranked #43 in the Northstar Basketball Pre-July 2013 Top 50, while Kinglsey was at the prestigious LeBron James Skills Academy and Bell is regarded as one of the top rising juniors in California.

All three players were were in North Augusta, S.C. for the Nike Peach Jam/EYBL Finals. Young was there were The Family's U16 squad, while Kingsley was with the U17 Arkansas Wings and Jordan Bell ran with the California Supreme U16 team.

James Young, a 6'5 small forward out of Troy (MI), told Northstar Basketball that he is hearing from Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State, Louisville, and Georgia Tech. Surprisingly, Young said he did not think he had any scholarship offers.

"I like Kentucky a lot and Michigan State and Ohio State," said Young, who has yet to take any unofficial visits.

"Yeah, hopefully Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State . . . and Louisville," Young said of who he would like to visit. He has yet to schedule any trips, though.

On who is recruiting him the hardest, Young remarked, "Michigan State is showing me a lot of love and Ohio State called me a couple times."

Young, who said location will "not at all" be a factor in a decision, noted that he grew up rooting for Michigan State and Kentucky.

If both MSU and UK were to offer, how tough of a decision would that be for him? "Yeah, it would be really tough," Young said. "Yeah, I don't know, that would be real tough."

Player of the Day: James Young (The Family)

Troy (MI) wing James Young has played very well throughout EYBL, skyrocketing up the rankings as a result. His excellent play continued on Friday in The Family?s win over Speice Indy Heat, as he displayed the ability to knock down perimeter shots and get to the basket off the dribble.

The southpaw is a tough matchup due to the fact that teams have to put a larger defender on him to deal with his size, only to see Young show off his ability to get to the rim. Speaking with Young after the game, he says that his focuses during the summer are to improve his ball-handling, rebounding and defense.

James Young mentioned the following schools: Michigan State, Ohio State, Providence, Kentucky and Kansas in no particular order. Young, who is considering studying business in college (but nothing definite), is looking for a school that has good coaching and facilities in addition to a quality education.

My uneducated guess is that he is a MSU lock unless Kentucky is really serious and even then I think he will be a Sparty even though I would love to see him wearing the scarlet and gray.
Based on the update right before this last one, how do you come to the conclusion that it is MSU or Kentucky?

I detect a little harshness here. My sense of how Izzo recruits certain types of athletes out of the state of Michigan and with regard to Kentucky, as much as I hate to say it, Kentucky Kentucky and they pay very well:) My hopes on us landing James just are not very high. Plus, he might play the same position as Loving although we could never have enough of those types of players.

No harshness at all. Just the fact that he said on 5/4 that "Kansas, Kentucky & #OhioState are the schools that stand out most to him" with no mention of Michigan State. Didn't know if you had info from elsewhere, but based on that it would seem as though MSU sits no higher than #4 at the moment.

Recruiting | James Young waits on college call

James Young lists Kentucky, Kansas, Ohio State, Arizona and Michigan State as his top five choices and might decide by the fall.

LAS VEGAS ? Back in the early spring, Troy, Mich., five-star wing James Young was telling everybody who would listen that he wanted the University of Kentucky men?s basketball program to recruit him.

The Wildcats hadn?t previously shown a lot of interest.

?Kentucky would be No. 1,? Young told The Courier-Journal in April. ?That?s where I want to go. They would be on top of my list right now.?

The UK staff saw him several times in April, began making more contact and last month extended an offer to Young, who is a top-10 player in the Class of 2013 rankings by all the major scouting services.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound Young laughed at the LeBron James Skills Academy when asked if his chatter about the Wildcats helped alert the staff about his game.

?I really think they did,? Young said. ?I let them know I wanted to be there, so I think that really helped with the coaches.?

Young, who has topped the 20-point-per-game mark two years in a row at Troy High School, said he has spoken with head coach John Calipari several times and is in contact more with assistant coach Kenny Payne.

?Coach Cal is a great coach; they have a great facility and a great fan base,? Young said. ?They said I am a top priority, and they are a priority on top of my list. We can just show a lot of love back and forth.?

But Young said he?s not ready to commit.

The explosive left-handed top-ranked shooting guard in the country also listed Kansas, Ohio State, Arizona and Michigan State to round out his top five.

?They have all offered me,? he said. ?I am just keeping all of my options open for right now. You never know what might happen. I?m just staying open.?
